  2. Balderson hat-trick throws game wide openpublished at 12:59 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

George Balderson’s hat-trick with his second, third and fourth deliveries of the morning has thrown this game wide open again after Lancashire’s lower order had done well to stretch their lead to 97 despite Shane Snater returning remarkable figures of 6-10.

Essex’s openers had looked comfortable in adding 24 before Nick Browne was lbw to Tom Bailey. Lancashire then sensed the opportunity for further success before lunch and it was Balderson who dramatically delivered.

His second delivery bowled Alastair Cook off his pad, Dan Lawrence hit the next straight to mid wicket and then Balderson delivered the perfect yorker length ball that left only Matt Critchley’s leg stump still standing.

At lunch it’s hard to call which way this will go.

  3. Slow progress at Tauntonpublished at 12:57 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    Somerset 362-7 v Northamptonshire - lunch

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Radio Somerset

This game is moving on slowly, as Somerset added 91 to their overnight score in the morning session, whilst losing three wickets.

They did take a third batting point but were never remotely in reach of a fourth, whilst the demise of James Rew, lbw to a good one from Tom Taylor, gave Northants a second bowling point.

As they went in lunch, Lewis Gregory was once again marshalling the tail in pursuit of a big enough total to put real pressure on the Northants batters, when their turn comes.

  5. Lunch at Chelmsfordpublished at 12:41 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    Essex 107 & 34-4 v Lancs 131 & 73

The chaos has continued down at Chelmsford. After 26 wickets on day one, we have had eight more this morning.

Lancashire managed to scrape their way up to 73, leading by just 97, thanks almost entirely to George Bell and Tom Hartley, who made 24 and 23, respectively.

Essex started relatively steadily in their chase despite losing Nick Browne for seven, but then slipped to 28-4 as George Balderson took the wickets of Alastair Cook, Dan Lawrence and Matt Critchley in a wonderful hat-trick.

It leaves this game very much in the balance at lunch.

WICKET Bean b Lawes 12published at 12:40 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    Surrey 333 v Yorkshire 49-2 - lunch

Tom Lawes strikes with the final ball before the interval at the Micky Stewart Oval as Fin Bean is bowled through the gate as he shaped to play to leg.

Bean battled away for 84 minutes against Surrey's strong seam attack and Yorkshire will now have to regroup after lunch, with George Hill resuming on 25 not out.

Division One leaders Surrey earlier added 41 to their overnight 292-6.

  7. Worcestershire strengthen positionpublished at 12:39 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    Worcestershire 390 v Nottinghamshire 10-1 - lunch

    Dave Bracegirdle
    BBC Radio Nottingham commentator

Worcestershire strengthened their position over Division Two leaders Nottinghamshire during the second morning of the match at New Road.

Left with a tricky 20 minutes to bat before lunch Notts lost Ben Slater, comprehensively bowled by Dillon Pennington for six in reaching 12-1.

The visitors were able to secure maximum bowling points during an otherwise frustrating session in which the hosts advanced their score from 297-7 to 390 all out.

Gareth Roderick reached his century from 205 balls but was then pinned lbw by Brett Hutton, who later ended the innings by having last man Ben Gibbon caught in the deep.

Pennington chipped Patterson-White to midwicket, leaving Josh Tongue unbeaten on a career-best 45.

  8. Lunch at the Ageas Bowlpublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    Hampshire 57 v Kent 165 & 153-6

Jack Leaning and Harry Finch make it through to lunch - Leaning in particular has been impressive, moving to 36.

Kent started the day 20-3, having lost Ben Compton, Conor McKerr and Harry Podmore late last night, but the pitch looks to have flattened out, and the visitors have stretched their lead to 261.

  9. End of session at Bristolpublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    Gloucs 74-4 v Warwks 274

    A tough morning for Gloucestershire.

274 is looking like a better than par score as the hosts lose four in 22 overs before the break.

Lots of work for Miles Hammond and Graeme van Buuren to do on what looks like a turning pitch.

Hats off to Dom Sibley, who carried his bat this morning for an unbeaten 120.

  10. Lunch at Tauntonpublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    Somerset 362-7 v Northamptonshire

A couple of singles off Rob Keogh end the morning session at Taunton.

Somerset have added 91 to their overnight 271-4 for the loss of Lewis Goldsworthy, James Rew and Craig Overton.

Lewis Gregory (27) and Josh Davey (19) are the two not out batters.

  11. Lunch at New Roadpublished at 12:33 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    Worcs 390 v Notts 12-1

Dillon Pennigton is taking his time with this, the last over before lunch.

Matthew Montgomery blocks and a fine session of play for the Pears concludes.

They resumed on 297-7, adding 93 runs. Roderick scored his first century as a Pears player at New Road, plus there were handy contributions all the way down the order.

  12. wicket

WICKET Bracey b Yadav 5published at 12:27 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    Gloucs 73-4 v Warwks 274

Got him with an arm ball!

Bracey misses with a straight drive and a disappointing morning session for the hosts continues.

Gloucester Captain Graeme van Buuren is in next.

  13. wicket

WICKET Slater b Pennington 6published at 12:24 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    Worcs 390 v Notts 10-1

    The Pears strike early.

One ball after a pull to fine leg for four, the bowler's next delivery is much straighter.

Slater plays all around it and the off stump is ripped out of the ground.

Matthew Montgomery is in earlier than he might have hoped.

  14. Postpublished at 12:23 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    Gloucs 71-3 v Warwks 274

Yadav bowls short and wide but Bracey leaves it alone.

There's turn for Yadav here and the hosts can't afford to lose another one before lunch. Perhaps two or three overs left beforehand.

  15. Postpublished at 12:22 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    Surrey 333 v Yorks 40-1

Jamie Overton tests out Fin Bean with a ball banged in half way down, but the line isn't right and the left-hander is able top flash it away over the slips for four. It takes him into double figures.

WICKET Critchley b Balderson 0published at 12:21 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    Essex 107 & 28-4 v Lancs 131 & 73

    Hat-trick for George Balderson!

Full and straight, Matt Critchley has his middle and off stumps removed, and the Lancashire players are ecstatic! George Balderson is being absolutely mobbed out in the middle.

    Essex still need 70 more...

    Maiden for Dillon Pennington.

At the other end, Haseeb Hameed gets off the mark with a four from a wristy flick through square leg.

  18. Durham making decent progresspublished at 12:20 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    Durham 159-1v Sussex 162

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

It is a lovely sunny day in CLS with plenty of people in the stands in t-shirts and shorts. Quite a contrast to the gloom of yesterday when the lights were on all day and there was rain in the air.

It's a good day for making runs too and that's what Michael Jones and Scott Borthwick have been doing. Their partnership for the second wicket is now 123 from 189 balls.

Jones has reached his fourth half-century in five innings and is in the form of his life. After 87 at Derby two weeks ago and 97 and 50 at Leicester last week, he now has 68 against Sussex.

Scott Borthwick has also reached the seventh half century of his season and is on 59. He hasn't scored a century this year but with Sussex a bowler down, having lost Henry Crocombe to a shoulder injury, it appears there are plenty of more runs to come today.

    Gloucs 66-3 v Warwks 274

A big lbw appeal for Henry Brooks against Miles Hammond is turned down. The ball cut back sharply off the seam and may have done too much.

Slow left arm bowler Danny Briggs will bowl to new batter James Bracey, who plays with the spin defensively into the leg side.

He's off the mark with a top edged sweep over backward square leg for four.
