  3. 'The pitch isn't good enough' - Chapplepublished at 10:21 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    Essex 107 v Lancashire 131 & 25-6 (match resumes 10:00)

    Glen ChappleImage source, Rex Features

Lancashire head coach Glen Chapple gave a blunt assessment of the pitch after 26 wickets fell on the opening day against Essex at Chelmsford.

"We've got lads in really good form, who are having good seasons, and they've just found the pitch unplayable really," the former seam bowler told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"The surface looks poor. The ball is coming off different every time but we're going to try and get as many in front as we can and see what happens to the pitch in the remaining part of the game."

He added: "In no way shape or form is that (pitch) good enough. We're here for four days, we've come to play a proper game of cricket and that's not good enough."

  4. 'Calculated risks' pay off for Popepublished at 10:17 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    Surrey 292-6 v Yorkshire (match resumes 10:30)

Yorkshire seamer Steve Patterson admitted it had not been a great day for the White Rose after Ollie Pope's century put Surrey in a good position at The Oval.

Patterson took 4-52 but England batter Pope hit 136 as Surrey turned the tables following an uncertain start to their first innings.

"There is something in that surface and we started well with the ball and, when we got those two wickets after lunch, I think we could have gone on and bowled them out for 200-odd," said Patterson.

“But fair play to Ollie Pope. He took some calculated risks and put the pressure back on us."

  5. Hampshire 'can bounce back' - Whitepublished at 10:13 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    Hants 57 v Kent 165 & 20-3 (match resumes 10:30)

Hampshire's Ben Brown is bowledImage source, Rex Features

Hampshire cricket manager Giles White insisted they were "by no means out of the game" despite being bowled out for just 57 by Kent at the Ageas Bowl.

A total of 23 wickets fell on day one and the visitors will resume on 20-3 in their second innings, having been put in at the start of the match.

"There's a lot of belief in this group and if you put a couple of (quick) wickets on that score, we're back in the game," White told BBC Radio Solent.

"To be bowled out so quickly has put us behind the eight-ball, but as we've seen over the summer, this team has the ability to bounce back."

  6. 'Only myself to blame for run out' - Abellpublished at 10:10 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    Somerset 271-4 v Northamptonshire (play resumes 10:30)

    Tom AbellImage source, Rex Features

Somerset skipper Tom Abell accepted the blame for his run out after making 111 on the opening day against Northants at Taunton.

He called for a second run, but was sent back by his partner and beaten by a throw to the bowler's end.

"I was feeling really good out there and wanted to start putting a bit more pressure on their fielders, but it was a misjudgement on my part and it was a shame because we would have liked to have been up around 290 or 300 by the close," he said.

"I don't think I have had more than two centuries in a season before so it's good to have made four this summer."

  7. Bears will 'stay positive' - Sibleypublished at 10:07 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

Gloucestershire v Warwickshire 255-8 (play resumes at 10:30)

    Dom SibleyImage source, Rex Features

England opener Dom Sibley is keen to "go out on a high note" by helping Warwickshire secure their Division One status ahead of his return to Surrey for next season.

And his unbeaten 105 held the Bears together on the opening day of their crucial relegation game at Bristol.

"The ball has spun consistently, a few went through the top and I'm pleased to have got a hundred on that pitch. It was hard going for a while, but Danny Briggs came out and played really well and our partnership set us up," he said.

"It's going to be difficult batting on the last day and we're going to stay positive throughout and try to win the match."

Day two of the penultimate round of County Championship matches.

And the way things went at Chelmsford and the Ageas Bowl yesterday, there might not be a day three at either ground.

Bowlers well on top there, but Division One leaders Surrey recovered from a shaky start - thanks to Ollie Pope's hundred - to put themselves in a decent position against Yorkshire.

Welcome to our coverage. Play starts at 10:30.
