Day one of the Super 12s done, then. Hard going for the lesser teams in the group, who have both been beaten by the big boys...

  2. Post update

    Mohammad Nabi

Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi: "It's not the best start to the tournament for us but we tried our best. We didn't get a good enough total on the board in the first innings and everyone knows England are one of the best T20 teams in the world.

"The pitch was more suitable to them as well but there weren't enough runs. I still think our boys played really well.

"They took some very good catches out there. We were thinking that something like 150 would be a good score to fight with.

"We do want to bat first and we know we have very good spinners with a lot of experience in Australia.

"We will learn from this game and from our mistakes. Hopefully we can improve on that in the next game."

  3. Post update

More from Chris Woakes on TMS: "Every guy that came off said that it wasn't easy to time the ball out there, and they've got some wo- class bowlers as well. We're pleased to get over the line and 140 would have been a tricky chase."

On the bowling: "The first run out in a tournament, you want to lay a marker down and get it right. You don't want a poor performance first up.

"Everyone did their bit, Stokesy bowled well up front but Sam Curran takes the plaudits with 5-10 - I don't think he's going to better that. A really good outing from the guys with the ball."

  4. Post update

More from Chris Woakes on England's catching: "Bowling figures in T20 can often depend on the fielding so the fact we caught absolutely everything bar one speccy from Halesy, we caught everything.

"That really helps us as bowlers and there was some great ground fielding as well. In the first half of the game, we couldn't have asked for much more."

  5. Post update

England bowler Chris Woakes, speaking to TMS: "We're happy to get the win. In the first game of the tournament, regardless of who it's against, you want to get the win. From that point of view, we're pleased.

"I think it was actually a really tricky wicket tonight, you can't judge a pitch until both sides have batted on it and although it was relatively comfortable in the end, they definitely made up work for it."

  6. Post update

Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi: "We tried our best to play good cricket, but we didn't put a good total on the board. Everyone knows England are the best T20 team in the world. The pitch was more suitable for them.

"They took two or three good catches. We thought 145 would be a good total for us to fight."

  7. Post update

England fast bowler Mark Wood on Sky Sports: "The most pleasing thing was the catches. It was like a highlight reel. We felt ready. We've come in with a lot of games under our belt.

"It's easy to say you want to get your run-rate up. The ball was swinging and there was extra bounce. We went out there with the intention, but sometimes you have to play smart cricket.

"Afghanistan are a really dangerous team, I thought we were clinical."

  8. Post update

Player of the match Sam Curran: "They made it quite tricky for us towards the end there, we know they have got world-class spinners but it's good to get that first victory.

"We saw in the qualifiers, the West Indies missing out shows that anyone can beat anyone. But we have taken confidence from this into our next game and then on to Australia next week which will hopefully be an incredible game to be involved in.

"We had great preparation, there's no better way to prepare than playing that many games [against Pakistan and Australia]. We will prepare well for our game against Ireland next, that will be a tough game but we've got to go again.

"With my bowling I'm just trying to be as adaptable as possible and get better at playing in different phases of the game and contributing to the team as much as I can, and I'm really enjoying my cricket at the moment."

    Nicky Shaw

England World Cup winner on BBC Test Match Special

Sam Curran bowled to a plan and he executed really, really well. He was on a hat-trick. All the balls he bowled, he executed well so he deserves everything he gets.

  10. Post update

Not surprisingly, Sam Curran is player of the match for his five-fer, the first by an England man in T20 internationals.

  11. Post update

    Ravi Bopara

Former England all-rounder on BBC Test Match Special

Australia can win the rest of their games and still not qualify because of how heavily they lost today...

  12. Post update

    Nicky Shaw

England World Cup winner on BBC Test Match Special

Liam Livingstone deserves a red inker. He's been the person to stick around for England and make sure they get this done.

  13. Post update

Just quietly, Liam Livingstone helped himself to 29 not out from 21 balls. He's easing his way back from that ankle injury.

    Jonathan Agnew

BBC cricket correspondent on Test Match Special

A wide! The game ends with a wide. The bowler is unimpressed but England win by five wickets with 11 balls remaining.

It's a comfortable win, they weren't really stretched. They'll be things they'll look at, particularly in the chase.

  15. England win by five wickets

    Eng 113-5

    Won with a wide!

A bit of an anti-climax, but England won't care. They have the 'W' and two points.

Brilliant with the ball and in the field, doing enough with the bat.

They move on to face Ireland on Wednesday.

  16. Eng 112-5

    Target 113

    Scores level, Moeen on strike...

  17. Eng 111-5

    Target 113

Moeen swipes a couple off the final ball. England will need two to win at the start of the 19th.

  18. Eng 109-5

    Target 113

    Four to win...
