Ire 11-0
It is pouring down, indeed. The covers are on, the players are off.
It's going to be one of those days, isn't it?

That's good batting from Stirling. He knows Woakes likes to swing the ball away and had already cleared the front leg early.
And there's the first boundary.
Chris Woakes starts with a very wide one that Stirling carves past point for four. A freebie, really.
A quiet first over, Stokes giving nothing away and no real signs of aggression from Ireland yet.

There's something very 2010-11 about hearing Jerusalem echoing around an empty MCG.
First runs on the board as Stirling swipes at one outside off stump and takes a single down to third man.
Solid in defence from Paul Stirling.

This might be a good battle between Stokes and Stirling. Stokes will swing the ball away, which might suit Stirling.
Here we go then. About 20 minutes late but we are ready to go.
Paul Stirling will face the first ball from Ben Stokes.

Matt Mehdi-Daley: Many uni students pull all-nighters, but so far in my 2 1/2 years I’ve watched England play in Sri Lanka, India, The Ashes and now the T20 World Cup.
Pakistan and New Zealand left before I stop taking it for granted. Would be nice to watch England win once though.

About two minutes ago the drizzle became heavier and the groundstaff started to move in. Now it's lighter again but hasn't quite stopped.
Frustrating.

It's a lot calmer outside the ground today than Sunday before India played Pakistan.
They're hopeful of a crowd up towards 25,000 which wouldn't be a bad effort.
The Shane Warne statue has again had a lot of people stopping for photos.
Good news!
The covers are off and we're going to start again in 10 minutes' time.

Daphne Clifton: Glad to be awake for this. Let’s hope the rain holds off… or I go back to sleep.

There is just a little bit of rain around so we're going to have a delayed start.
Hopefully it won't be too long...

Ireland played a warm-up game here but this will be the first time have ever played a competitive occasion at the MCG.
A special day.
