As a bowler there is nothing more annoying than bowling your best ball and the batter still being able to rotate the strike, especially in Test cricket because it is about setting a batter up, but England have rotated the strike nicely so far.

  2. Eng 15-0published at 7 overs

This is getting confusing. Just the one over for Sekhukhune to fill a gap as Nadine de Klerk is back, also getting a change of ends.

The batters are able to scamper two after a wild throw into the keeper Sinalo Jafta, who does not look impressed when she has to leap full stretch into the air and is still not able to get a hand on it.

  3. Eng 12-0published at 6 overs

Ah, there we go. I knew they wouldn't be taking Kapp out of the game that early - she's having a go from the other end.

Despite the cold and the breeze, the schoolkids in the crowd are having a great time. They're going wild for every run at the moment.

Tammy Beaumont is on seven and Georgia Elwiss on TMS has just tipped her for a hundred. No pressure then.

  4. Eng 10-0published at 5 overs

An early bowling change for South Africa as Tumi Sekhukhune replaces Marizanne Kapp after just two overs.

Interesting move - maybe just a change of ends for Kapp?

Emma Lamb clips one into the leg side and helps herself to two runs. She's picked off the loose ball nicely so far and looks very at ease.

The ball will do a little bit for the first hour this morning with a bit of cloud cover but it still looks like a great pitch to be batting on for England.

Kapp said she felt quite stiff after that mammoth innings yesterday too so England will hope to capitalise on that as she is the spearhead of this South Africa attack.

  6. Eng 8-0published at 4 overs

Nadine de Klerk corrects herself for the remainder of the over as Beaumont goes back into defensive mode.

It's cloudy and breezy in Taunton today and South Africa's fielders look freezing. Hope they've got some hand warmers at the ready.

  7. Eng 8-0published at 3.2 overs

And as I say that, Beaumont cashes in on some width to smash de Klerk through the off side for the first boundary of the day.

    Nailed it.

  8. Eng 4-0published at 3 overs

A watchful start from Tammy Beaumont, resisting Kapp's tempting deliveries outside the off stump. She's such an aggressive opener in white ball cricket, it must be such an unusual adjustment.

Emma Lamb is someone who sets up really well. It's quite uncomplicated, she stands nice and still and is quick on any width. There's not a lot of trigger movements and nicely compact in a good way. So there's less that can go wrong in her movements.

  10. Eng 3-0published at 2 overs

Solid defence from Emma Lamb as she safely navigates Nadine de Klerk's first over.

No doubt she will be feeling those early nerves, but after the openers, there are some inexperienced bowlers for South Africa so England's batters won't mind a cautious start.

It's tricky in women's Tests because we have lots of slip catchers who don't normally stand there.

Kapp will be trying to find that edge, but it brings in those slip catchers who don't necessarily normally play there. Obviously we don't have lots of slips in white-ball cricket so this is quite a big ask for them.

  12. Eng 1-0published at 1 over

That'll ease the nerves. Lamb gets her first run with a clip off her pads for a single and England are underway.

  13. Eng 0-0published at 0.1 overs

Emma Lamb's first ball in Test cricket is left alone outside the off stump. A nice comfortable start.

  14. Postpublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 28 June 2022

Now then. We're ready for day two. Emma Lamb goes through some pre-batting stretches and back twists, takes her guard and is ready to take the first ball.

Marizanne Kapp (who else?!) to take the first over.

    Alex Hartley

We were all looking forward to seeing Shabnim Ismail with the new Duke ball and it's a shame we won't see her but they have made that decision because there is a lot of cricket to play this summer. She's got that niggle and they want to look after that so Kapp is the real threat for this South African bowling attack.

South Africa all-rounder Marizanne Kapp on Sky Sports: "It was definitely something different batting yesterday, because usually when I get to around 50 I know the innings is coming to an end! But as soon as I got to about 70, I thought, OK, I could be in for 100 here.

"I turned my phone on yesterday after play and I had a message from Dane [van Niekerk, Kapp's wife] and she went to a pub with my dad to watch! She said they both were crying! She's always happy for me but it is hard for her to watch from home.

"I was pretty nervous when I first got in. We didn't get an ideal start, but I knew if I stayed in as long as possible I could be more attacking against the older ball.

"We definitely have to strike early today, the new ball will be crucial. Hopefully I can take a few wickets too! But I have been really impressed with the youngsters, I am excited to see what they can do. They did really well in the practice game last week.

"I still haven't been through all my messages on my phone, but it's just great to see how many people are watching and following women's cricket."

Three of England's Test debutants took their maiden international wickets on day one.

Opening batter Emma Lamb was spared a nervy 15 minutes at the close of play - can she join Alice Davidson-Richards, Issy Wong and Lauren Bell in making her mark in her first Test outing?

Lamb will open the batting alongside Tammy Beaumont this morning after South Africa were bowled out for 284.

Marizanne Kapp will be key for South Africa (again).

After saving her team with an incredible 150, today she will lead the bowling attack - especially in the absence of two of their other key bowlers, Shabnim Ismail and Ayabonga Khaka.
