England all-rounder Nat Sciver on Sky Sports: "We had tricky periods and then it got easier. You have ebbs and flows but we were in it for the long haul.

"I knew Kappy would come back on (with the second new-ball) so I really had to switch on and make sure I was disciplined - I was near my hundred as well.

"Katherine [Brunt] has been slightly less vocal that yesterday but it is really special to have her here. It's a bit strange that she isn't playing but it was really special.

"Everyone is really excited, there are a few tired bodies so we're glad to have given the bowlers a rest. We'll see what happens tomorrow."

On Alice Davidson-Richards: "There will be some good shots around of ADR’s face today I think. I think I was more nervous for your century than mine actually. Just for her to come into the squad and team and fit right in and play how she plays, I think it’s just a dream debut for you."

On the run out of Heather Knight: "I've apologised to Heather for the run-out so I couldn't get out otherwise she wouldn't forgive me!"

It is not easy to score a hundred in a Test match. These things take hard work and England had to ride that passage before tea. But they got through it.

You feel if England played more Test cricket, Nat Sciver would have got the century before now. She's deserved it and so does Alice Davidson-Richards.

Here's how Alice Davidson-Richards was out from the penultimate ball of the day.

She looked distraught, but she'll look back on her innings of 107 with immense pride in the coming hours and days.

Alice Davidson-Richards on Sky Sports: "I literally do not have the words, it's ridiculous. I thought I'd be more nervous but I seemed to hit the gaps and Nat was a hell of a human to have at the other end. We kept just saying to take it ball by ball at each run and it was such an amazing feeling.

"We haven't actually batted much together so I wasn't sure what to chat. It was really simple just ball-by-ball but it was nice to have someone I've known for so long. It really helped me on my way. I was just as nervous for Nat's hundred as mine.

"It was incredible to have my family here, they've been through every up and down and all the smiles and tears. I love hugs.

"We had a message to not worry about scoring rate. It was the same message as before, just play the ones you can, leave and defend and put the bad ball away. Don't get me wrong, we had to vent at each other in between talking about which biscuits we wanted.

"I just can't wait for a brew now."

That ADR smile went briefly, I reckon for four or five seconds as she thought, "what have I done?!" We saw a few expansive shots before she got out and she told herself, "no, stop it, we're playing out for the end of the day."

But then her eyes just lit up. Nat Sciver came over to her though as they were walking off and that smile was back very quickly.

From there on in it was all about Nat Sciver and debutant Alice Davidson-Richards.

They shared 207 for the sixth-wicket - an England women record - and were on track to pass the record 235 for any wicket before the latter picked out point from the penultimate ball of the ball.

The stand though has shifted England from being on the back foot to being firmly on the front foot with a lead of 44 going into day three tomorrow.

The more time you put into the bowlers' legs, the harder it is to come back.

I envisage England batting maybe up until lunch, half an hour before maybe, to get at South Africa with the new ball before the break.

A lead of 100-150 will put England in a very commanding position.

Sophia Dunkley and Amy Jones then fell in quick fashion too as England slipped to 121-5.

At that time, they were 163 behind and were facing a hefty first-innings deficit.

Emma Lamb and Tammy Beaumont gave England a solid start, putting on 65 for the opening wicket, but both fell, alongside captain Heather Knight, to leave England on the back foot at 86-3.

You want your debutants to get off to a good start and they all have, that'll breed a lot of confidence, especially in such a long summer for England.

It's been amazing to watch and it's exciting as a fan to see them all contributing already.

You look at who England have still got to bat. I think we'll see Ecclestone bat with Sciver for a bit then it is time for Sciver, Ecclestone and Wong to get on with it and try to get England up to a 100-150 lead.

That was an outstanding partnership between Nat and Alice to put England in the box seat.

They'll want to come back tomorrow and try and get a lead of 100-150 as soon as they possibly can and get bowling, especially with some dodgy weather around tomorrow.

Marizanne Kapp looked tired in the field and she may be relied upon to score some more runs in the second innings. It's not just this Test match either, there are still the white ball games to go.

Kapp is their key player and it already looks like this game has taken a lot out of her.

South Africa do look tired. It was South Africa's day until tea and then England had that fantastic partnership. My fear is that South Africa will be very tired.

Nat Sciver and Alice Davidson-Richards shared a quite magnificent 207 for the sixth wicket.

That's what happens, you get tempted into the short wide one and she's hit it straight to the fielder.
