Sue Redfern and Anna Harris are having a good, long look which I'm choosing to take as a good sign. If it was that bad, surely they'd have been straight back in?

Anyway, while we wait, why not read what England men's skipper Ben Stokes has had to say ahead of the rearranged fifth Test against India. He's promising more of the same after the thrilling series win over New Zealand. I think we can all agree that sounds good! More here.

The umpires are out having a look, the umbrellas are down and the supersopper is doing its thing to remove the standing water from the covers.

All the covers are in place at the moment so a restart isn't imminent but we could be surprised. We live in hope anyway.

  3. Postpublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 30 June 2022

We're approaching inspection time so what do we think? England will have everything crossed for prompt restart, South Africa would probably be delighted with another inspection, a few more overs out of the game and the possibility of some more rain.

Personally, after managing about eight overs in four or five hours yesterday and none so far today, it would be nice to cover a bit of cricket!

Elsewhere, this was some effort from Yorkshire second XI left-hander Finlay Bean. The 20-year-old was 365 not out overnight in their game against Notts and went on to make 441. Yorkshire declared on 810-7.

Timothy: YES to five-day matches and YES to more than one Test match. Would love a proper series to see players from both teams develop and shine.

One of the main issues England have had this morning is trying to oust nightwatcher Tumi Sekhukhune. The left-hander has really dug in for South Africa and is unbeaten on 19 from 105 balls.

    Proper Test match batting.

  7. Pitch inspection at 14:40 BSTpublished at 14:14 British Summer Time 30 June 2022

You may have noticed that play as not resumed as scheduled at 14:00 BST. The rain made sure of that.

The good news is that it has stopped and there will be a pitch inspection in around 25 minutes' time.

    Here we go again.

  8. Postpublished at 14:10 British Summer Time 30 June 2022

That has been it for England as far as wickets are concerned. South Africa moved into a seven-run before the heavens opened, with Marizanne Kapp playing a couple of eye-catching shots.

The all-rounder did a rather good job at defying England on day one, of course...

  9. Postpublished at 14:06 British Summer Time 30 June 2022

Lee was going well and put on 54 with Sekhukhune for the fifth wicket. She tried one big shot too many though and was superbly caught by Kate Cross, running back from mid-off. Sophie Ecclestone the bowler.

    Back to the recap!

England had the chances to press home their advantage this morning but Amy Jones dropped Lizelle Lee on 13 while Tumi Sekhukhune hit the ball at, rather than to, Tammy Beaumont at short leg and was a little fortunate that the ball landed safely...

I'll break from my recap of the South Africa innings so far to bring you some breaking news ahead of the men's Test at Edgbaston tomorrow.

You will remember that Rohit Sharma tested positive for Covid-19 last weekend and it seems he has not recovered sufficiently to lead India against England in Birmingham.

Instead, Jasprit Bumrah will take charge with Rishabh Pant as vice-captain.

Onto today then and England needed another seven wickets, South Africa just needed to bat for as long as possible.

It was Heather Knight's side who got the better start though as Cross trapped the tourists' skipper Sune Luus lbw early on. South Africa four down and still trailing by more than 60 runs...

  13. Postpublished at 13:49 British Summer Time 30 June 2022

Wong struck again before the close - and this was the big one! Laura Wolvaardt superbly caught in the gully by Nat Sciver as England got the ball talking under the lights...

  14. Postpublished at 13:47 British Summer Time 30 June 2022

They could have Lara Goodall caught behind off Lauren Bell soon after the first rain delay, with UltraEdge showing a spike, but there was no appeal at the time and the South Africa opener survived.

Another long delay delayed ensued before England were able to oust the left-hander. A legside strangle giving Issy Wong her first wicket of the innings...

  15. Postpublished at 13:42 British Summer Time 30 June 2022

Anyway, enough of the rain chat - there'll plenty of time for that... As and when play does resume, England will be on the hunt for the five remaining South Africa wickets before looking to knock off the runs and claim a first home Test win since 2005.

Let's have a look at the first they have taken so far. We've got to go back to before lunch yesterday for the first of, the skies were blue, the sun was shining and Kate Cross was having Andrie Steyn caught at gully...

Russ Williams: Stephan, weather apps are good for forecasting, i.e. knowing what the weather will do in future, which is surely useful. All going outside does is give an indication for the next hour or so.

I'm inclined to agree, Russ. But on this occasion I'm praying that mine is way off the mark!

    Rains apps...useful or not?

  18. Postpublished at 13:36 British Summer Time 30 June 2022

    Thanks, Ffion.

Fingers crossed the weather plays ball this afternoon with the potential for a very exciting finish at Taunton.

My weather app suggests it could be another long stint of updating you on the rain but then this very morning, the usefulness of such apps has been questioned...

  19. Postpublished at 13:31 British Summer Time 30 June 2022

Still no news about when play will resume but based on the lunch break being taken earlier, play should resume at 14:00 BST if it is dry enough. But we'll keep you updated as soon as we have confirmation of anything.

I'm going to grab some lunch myself and it'll be Sam Drury to take you through the afternoon. He had to live text through about three hours of rain delays yesterday so let's hope the weather gods are kinder to him today.

I was on the receiving end of Issy Wong's batting prowess at the start of this season. It wasn't fun.

So I can confirm the fact she can give it a whack.
