Smart cricket is the absolutely key throughout this period of play now.

  3. Eng 47-1published at 6.0 overs

A fresh air shot from the left-handed Dawid Malan, attempting to shovel it into the legside, from Haris Rauf's fourth ball.

He and Alex Hales pick up three singles of the remainder of the over, the last of the powerplay.

All about this England pair keeping their composure and patience. Pakistan's middle order were pretty meek.

England are in a decent position and have a good batting line up with plenty of depth in there.

  5. Eng 44-1published at 5.3 overs

Change of bowling for Pakistan as the skiddy Haris Rauf comes into the attack. A leg bye off his first three balls.

Fantastic shot, the quality of striking that Malan has played is fantastic. He is a very knowledgeable cricketer and knows his own game.

  8. Eng 43-1published at 5.0 overs

Alex Hales takes his gloves off, spins his bat around. The charismatic Shahnawaz Dahani continues with the ball.

Dahani beats Dawid Malan's outside edge with a beauty. Three balls and couple of singles later and Malan capitalises on a slightly shorter delivery by whipping it into the leg side for four more.

Malan then, back in his crease, dabs it with soft hands for four through third.

    England going well here.

  9. Eng 33-1published at 4.0 overs

Alex Hales, looking determined and focused, breaks the shackles against Mohammad Nawaz as he gives himself room and he thumps his second delivery for four through the covers. Classic Hales.

He and Dawid Malan rotate the strike well. 10 off that over.

The worm shows England are three runs behind Pakistan. England are 33 for 1 after 4 overs. At the same stage Pakistan were 36 for 0.Image source, BBC Sport

Driven beautifully by Hales. We're getting glimpses of the old Hales we're used to seeing. Trademark shot.

  11. Eng 24-1published at 3.0 overs

Shahnawaz Dahanir is dancing around excitedly appealing for a caught behind from his first ball to Dawid Malan. A touch over exuberant - no bat involved.

An eventful over finishes with Alex Hales whipping a powerful drive through the covers for four. Scintillating shot.

He looked like he was doing salsa moves there on the boundary.

That really is a fantastic catch! Brilliant catch, both feet off the ground, inches off the rope.

    Hooked, lined and sunk.

Phil Salt swivels to hook a short ball from Shahnawaz Dahani but he can only find the fielder, Haider Ali, right on the edge of the boundary who takes a fine catch.

He cannot believe that shot has not gone the distance. A reflection of the pitch, perhaps. England's batter should take note.

Magnificent hit from Salt. He's someone who is an outstanding talent. I really enjoying him.

  16. Eng 19-0published at 2.2 overs

Shahnawaz Dahani into the fray for Pakistan and his second ball is to Phil Salt's liking. The England opener plonks his front foot down and wallops the Pakistan pace bowler back over his head. That was aerial, but very cleanly struck.

There's a bit of a subplot here as either Hales or Salt will be opening in the World Cup.

  18. Eng 15-0published at 2.0 overs

Impressive stuff from Mohammad Nawaz with England only able to pick up a single off the Pakistan spinner. All very flat, darting it into the opening pair and neither batter able to pierce the infield.

  19. Eng 14-0published at 1.3 overs

Spin early on from Pakistan, as Mohammad Nawaz starts at the other end.

The slow left-armer starts with three dots to Phil Salt who is unable to squeeze the ball through the gap in the field.

A trademark Alex Hales shot - hitting the ball very hard to the boundary.

A great start for England and both batsmen getting a boundary away.
