50 for Brookpublished at 09:26 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2022
What a game it's been for Brook. He's already got more than 200 runs in this match.

Mahmood will be happy to be finally in the wickets after a tough Test. After he was out, Stokes gave some instructions to Harry Brook. Maybe he gave an indication of how many they want before declaring?

Ben Stokes is feared around the world because he is an unbelievable cricketer. But when he plays like that you are thinking 'what are you doing?'

My only (very minor) complaint with Ben Stokes' captaincy is that we don't see enough of Ben Stokes' batting.
Stokes c Shakeel b Mahmood (Eng 192-5)
Thanks Matthew!
Wow...
That's a shocker! The captain is out for a three-ball duck. It was one of the simplest catches to short cover. Pakistan will be happy with that.
This feels like a good time to hand to Aymen Babar...

It's been an excellent innings for Root. England are going to start thinking about what target to set Pakistan.

Root just looked over his shoulder to see exactly where the fielder was but he's picked out Imam.
Root c Imam b Mahmood 73 (Eng 192-4)
Gone on the sweep. Zahid Mahmood gets some respite as Root chips one straight to short fine leg. Ben Stokes is coming out to bat. The lead is 270.
Root 73, Brook 49
Ouch.

Brook has now scored 104 runs off Zahid Mahmood from just 60 deliveries.

Zahid Mahmood tried to bend down to get the ball but couldn't get there quickly enough. Brook has hit that so hard.
Root 71, Brook 44
Two more boundaries to Brook and yes, they're off Mahmood again. The first was smacked back through the leg-spinner's legs before he could get his hands down.
England have scored 185 in 27 overs and it doesn't even feel like that big a deal.
Lead by 253
It looks like Babar has done something to upset the umpires. Joel Wilson is having a word.
Tea is at 10:00 GMT, by the way.
Off-spinner Agha Salman replaces Naseem, who Babar may now be protecting in this increasingly fruitless cause.

Adam Pinder-Smith: In all my years watching cricket I’ve never seen a player switch from batting right-handed to left-handed mid-innings. What a talent Root is.
Root 65, Brook 33
Still reeling.

Is that peak BazBall? Joe Root surely wouldn't have done that a year ago?
He's even shadow batting as a left-hander at the non-striker's end before returning to his conventional stance to flick the pace of Naseem to the boundary.
Lead by 232
I have never ever seen that. It wasn't a switch hit. Root just took guard as a left-hander. He went for a sweep, which looked textbook, but was a little too aerial.
After giving himself a fright, he returns to right-handed to hit a conventional reverse sweep. It goes for four. Maybe just stick with that, Joe, but I've honestly no idea anymore.
Wait. WHAT?!
Zahid Mahmood decided he wanted to go round the wicket to Joe Root so Root just changed to bat left-handed!
He could have been caught too.
