Alex: Man of the match for the Test? If England win it then Ben Stokes has to be in with a shout. Not for his batting or bowling but for making the bold captaincy decisions needed to force a victory on this surface.

  2. Pak 115-3published at 37 overs

    Target 343

There has definitely been a change of emphasis since drinks. Pakistan suddenly look like they want to win the game. There was a 12-over period earlier when five runs were scored when England were right on top but now it's starting to get a little nervy again.

It's been more entertaining the last couple of overs since the drinks break from Pakistan.

It's almost like they've had that bit of urgency, that chat that if they're going to win this Test match they have to keep rotating the strike.

  4. Pak 111-3published at 36 overs

    Shakeel 34, Rizwan 15

Turn! It has only taken five days. The problem for Jack Leach is it has gone too far to take Rizwan's edge.

He follows it with a long hop. That one is smacked away. The noise levels are rising a little.

If one of these two sides does win, it'll either be the highest or third-highest first-innings score to lose a Test match.

If England were to lose they will be the highest scoring team to lose in a Test match and in first-class cricket, over 60,000 matches, and if Pakistan lose they'll be the third-highest scoring team before going on to lose.

  6. Pak 104-3published at 35 overs

    Need 239 runs to win

Maybe Pakistan were just waiting for the spinners to come on. Rizwan has another go at Jacks, taking him for four more. The camera pans to Stokes who has something to think about for the first time.

  7. Pak 98-3published at 34.2 overs

    Don't trust him.

Will Jacks is on and that's Mohammad Rizwan's cue to spring into life. He slog sweeps the off-spinner to get off the mark with a boundary from his 24th delivery.

  11. drinks break

    Pak 93-3published at 34 overs

    Need 250 runs to win

Stokes' first bowling change of the day is to introduce Jack Leach and there's no swing in momentum. He bowls another maiden before we head to drinks.

Of course they'd have loved another wicket but England will be buoyed by this start. Pakistan have gone nowhere.

Along with a lot of other leadership qualities, Ben Stokes is quite good with DRS.

  13. Pak 93-3published at 33 overs

    Target 343

England all go up for an lbw appeal against Rizwan. Joe Root at slip is leaping up in the air while bowler Ollie Robinson pleads with his arms outstretched.

Stokes comes in as the man of calm - the dad of the party taking control. There's no review. The right decision.

Afterwards, Stokes gives Robinson a pat on the back that says "have a breather, mate." England have taken one wicket and conceded 13 runs in the first hour.

Tom Berry: Just woken up to an email from my optician which says I’m overdue an eye test. Good job too as all I’m seeing is dots.

It's relentless from Anderson. Every ball is on the mark, testing Shakeel's concentration. He's not going to hope it through the defences as we have seen so many times. He's just trying to wear the batters down with constant pressure. He's conceded five runs all morning and four of those were in his first over.

England have definitely been entertaining. I mean, we had Joe Root bat left-handed yesterday.

I asked the England head coach this morning about it and he said he was disappointed he didn't do it again.

  17. Pak 92-3published at 31 overs

    Need 251 runs to win

Almost right into the hands of the fielder at gully! Ben Stokes had literally just moved Zak Crawley there before this Ollie Robinson delivery. Stokes has a wry smile all over his face.

You're not very chatty this morning. Who is following?

  18. Pak 91-3published at 30 overs

Saud Shakeel steals a single to break the run of dots. Keaton Jennings hurls the ball in from mid-off and hits the stumps. Save it, Keats.

We have five maidens in the last six overs. Pakistan managed four maidens in both England innings combined.

Rizwan been bowled 12 dot balls so far, the most dot balls he's ever played at the start of a Test innings, albeit a very short career.

  20. Pak 90-3published at 29 overs

    Target 343

There are not many in the ground yet. One Pakistan fan that is in the stands is sat nervously, fingertips in prime position to be chewed in front of his mouth.

You guessed it. Another maiden. If this doesn't go Pakistan's way then this start will come in for some criticism.
