  2. 'A terrific effort'published at 08:54 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2022

England captain Ben Stokes: "Different conditions here and a differently played game. Things happened quickly and it was a brilliant game to play.

"We had a look at conditions and it was a tricky wicket. We were quite fortunate to find the cracks and our seamers became effective. Jimmy [Anderson], Robbo [Robinson] and Woody [Wood] bowled really well. There are definitely bodies that are tight up there but it was a terrific effort.

"The way they [seamers] bowled throughout the game, they were such a big threat along with the spin as well. Huge credit to them, coming on and bowling short spells and always picking up a wicket when I wanted them to."

On picking Abrar Ahmed: "It's the mindset in which you go out with. Amazing debut from Abrar but we still managed to score runs against him. I was really pleased with our batters being able to still go out there and scoring the runs.

"The decisions towards the end of the day are very difficult. Those definitely depend on who I think can come in and take a wicket at that stage."

I've been watching Tests for 45 years and I can honestly say that the approach by this England team is the best I've seen. Long live Test cricket!

  5. 'We fought hard'published at 08:50 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2022

Pakistan captain Babar Azam: "We were not up to the mark in the first innings. We had a couple of soft dismissals and we didn't finish well. We fought back with the ball and we fought hard in the second innings but unfortunately, it didn't finish well."

On the chase: "We had a simple plan to carry on the momentum. We had a couple of good partnerships - Imam and Saud and then Saud and Nawaz - but after that we did not finish well as a batting unit. But the tail tried hard."

On Abrar Ahmed: "A dream debut for Abrar and he used conditions very well in the first innings. After that he bowled well so good for him."

On the third Test: "Definitely looking forward to the Karachi Test match and we will do our best."

With Pope's catch, you could clearly see the ball touching the ground. His fingers were on the side of the ball and Joel Wilson made a mess of it.

England bowler Mark Wood, speaking to Sky Sports: "Massive. Shattered. It was hard fought but that is when it is worth it in the end. Two games the lads have put so much in. I am just absolutely knackered. I haven't bowled more than four overs in nine months. We knew we were close. That is what spurs you on. You don't want to let your mates down."

On his spell either side of lunch: "Stokesy said 'make a difference. Change the game'. That is what I tried to do. Subtly Stokesy changed the field at times. Nawaz played brilliantly. I didn't think the number nine would come and blaze it but it was nice to get over the line in the end."

On Ben Stokes: "The way he leads the team is fantastic. He is clear cut how he wants us to play. I would run through a brick wall for him."

There was a moment just before the dismissal of Mohammad Nawaz where Pakistan were the favourites. Shakeel played really well and it wasn't till Mark Wood came and picked up two wickets to completely change the game.

Player of the Match Harry Brook: "Tried to learn from my mistakes in the first innings and tried not to be too aggressive while still putting the bowlers under pressure.

"We knew before coming into the game that the pitch was going to turn. We probably didn't bat as well as we wanted to in the first innings.

"We went out there and tried to play our brand of cricket and put pressure on the bowlers."

England thoroughly deserve this win. They bowled really well on a fairly docile pitch and to win the series even before going to Karachi, it's a terrific effort.

Pakistan were well short of preparation and not up to the task.
