  3. 'Leg spinners get wickets and Rehan got five"published at 07:21 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

England skipper Ben Stokes speaking to BBC Sport:

On why he brought Rehan on late in the game: "The ball started reversing from nowhere for us and we've managed to burst the game open when the ball has been reversing so that's when you see me, [Mark] Wood and [Ollie] Robinson operate.

"But as soon as it stopped reversing that's when we brought Rehan on. Leg spinners get wickets and he's got five wickets and bowled us to victory so I don't think we can look too much at what time I brought him on but there was a reason."

On breaking Brendon McCullum's Test match six record: "I've had this man [Brendon McCullum] on my shoulder for a few weeks now and he'll be there for a few weeks before we head to New Zealand. I know we're level and I do want to take it off him. I knew there would be a bit of banter today when I got off the field because I was trying to do it."

On how they won: "Finding a way to take 20 wickets and putting the pressure back on to their bowling attack every given opportunity."

  4. 'I have things in my mind for Ashes' - Stokespublished at 07:16 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

England captain Ben Stokes, speaking about 2023 - an Ashes year - to Sky Sports: "I don't like looking too far ahead. I obviously have my eye on the Ashes and have got little things about that in the back of my head.

"We will just continuing to grow as team, spend more time out at here as unit, and keep enjoying having fun, playing cricket with a smile on our face and win as much as we can."

  5. 'Rehan's got a real future'published at 07:12 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

England's coach Brendon McCullum on Rehan Ahmed: "He's got a real future. He's been on the radar for English cricket. It took some courage from Stokes to thrust him into this side. The more we're willing to do that, the better for us. I'll encourage him to play as much franchise cricket and help him develop and learn. His attitude is brilliant, we need to get as much experience into him as possible and it will give other kids some inspiration."

On Rehan Ahmed playing in the IPL: "It would be great if he did. Why not give him that opportunity to rub shoulders with other players? What other 18-year-old is going to get those chances? He's a fully fledged international cricketer."

On future selection conundrums: "As soon as Jonny [Bairstow] is fit, he's back in this team. Just let things unfold and it's a much better place to be than scrambling for folks to play.

"I'm going to play some golf with my family and enjoy Christmas now."

  6. 'It's been incredible'published at 07:10 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

England coach Brendon McCullum speaking to BBC Sport: "Incredibly satisfying. It's been an incredible five weeks. We've seen comradery develop off the tour as well. A really awesome few weeks

"You learn a bit more about the players off the field especially in the subcontinent, and how the boys like to spend their social time so it's great to know these things when you have to speak to them about their skills. It's just confirmation of how good these guys are and I've got a really good job.

"If we look at all three Test matches. The grounds challenged us differently. To be able to play the style of cricket we have on those three different grounds, we're close to perfect.

"Pakistan played excellent cricket too. It was a series that was watchable. There were some defining moments when our boys stepped up."

It is 97 appearances and out for Azhar Ali, who waved to the supporters on what was his final Test match for Pakistan.

He departs having scored 7,142 runs at an average of 42.26.

  8. 'Rehan bowled us to victory'published at 07:02 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

England skipper Ben Stokes speaking to BBC Sport on Rehan Ahmed: "Yesterday he bowled us to victory. That spell of taking five big wickets of Pakistan was huge for us and being able to come back in this morning needing 50 and then a continuation of that was the partnership between Crawley and Duckett.

"To see Rehan at 18 years old go out and perform the way he's done is really really exciting going forward for English cricket. He's lucky to be in this environment where he can go out and express himself and not feel that added pressure that can come with playing international cricket.

"I think he really enjoyed himself out there. The one thing from watching him out there was the confidence he got from within himself to come to me and speak about fields and what he wanted and I let him go with what he wanted to do.

"It's a great sign for us going forward that we've got someone like that to build up and get some experience into. Who knows where he can go? Leg spin and batter as well, so very good for us."

  9. 'To win after losing the toss is very pleasing'published at 07:00 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

England skipper Ben Stokes speaking to BBC Sport: "I think the way in which we speak, and I've spoken since I've done this role, is just not worrying about the result and just going out and playing and expressing ourselves as a team and trying to give ourselves the best chance of winning and always thinking like that. So, I guess winning 3-0 proves that it can work on the odd occasion.

"Winning the toss is so crucial out here so to win after losing the toss is very pleasing. They put 300 runs on the board to start with and the way we went out there, it was like we were just continuing on from the way we were playing in the first two games. It was just a continuation of all the good work we've been doing."

  10. 'Rehan is an amazing story'published at 06:55 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

More from Brendon McCullum, speaking to Sky Sports, on the impact of Rehan Ahmed: “There were a few tears floating around the dressing room not long after Rehan’s cap presentation. The boys are still talking about how amazing that moment was. Sometimes it reminds you that you don’t take this granted. Rehan is an amazing story. He and his family love the game so much. He’s clearly got a huge amount of talent and ability. We’ve just got to allow him to develop at his own pace. We will give him the opportunities when they come but will also look after him when we need to. He couldn’t have been any more impressive than he has been so far.

“A few people might have realised just how talented he is. He is far from the finished product but we just have to nurture him over the next few years to get to where he wants to get too. I’m pretty relaxed about it. He can play some franchise cricket around the world, play in different conditions. Play as much cricket and get as much experience as he can and we will end up benefitting from it.”

On Ben Stokes’ impact: “We see what he does on the field. There is maverick and genius in a lot of it. He has an insatiable appetite to keep the game moving forward. But for me it is it is the man management, passion and drive to make a significant difference to Test cricket and English cricket which is most impressive. I feel incredibly lucky I have taken over this job just as Stokesy got the reins. I think he is only going to get better and better which is quite scary because if he continues to improve and drive this team forward then with the talent in the dressing room we will give it a good shake anyway."

  13. 'The side is very much in the image of the skipper'published at 06:45 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

More from England coach Brendon McCullum, speaking to Sky Sports: “The side is very much in the image of the skipper. He wants the guys to go out there and play with as much freedom as they can. He has the benefit of a long and distinguished career behind him and is at the stage of his life where he wants to do something significant and make a real impact. Not just on the game but on other people’s careers. He has identified that taking away that pressure and fear of failure allows the talent to come out. And what we have seen over the last 7-8 months is that skill and talent is not in question with this England side. All we try and do it remain consistent with the messaging. Have a smile on your face and whether they work out or whether they don’t be consistent with those conversations and encourage guy to go out there and allow their talent to come out without the fear of failure.

“We have taken 20 wickets on nine out of 10 occasions. It’s one thing scoring fast but you have to be able to bowl teams out as well. The mantra within the group is how do we take wickets. If you go for runs, you go for runs. We’d back ourselves to chase those down later on. Once you have that mindset and free yourself up from having to worry about runs it allows you to look at things with a positive mantra.

“The skipper has always got something happening, pulling a string somewhere. And the guys follow him. It’s great combination to have and it makes it pretty easy when you are watching up in the coaches box.”

Just noticed the class of Stokes, as they were shaking hands he handed the stump he took to Rehan, even in the joy of the moment he was thinking about giving the young debutant a souvenir he can cherish, class act.

  15. 'Incredibly proud'published at 06:34 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

England coach Brendon McCullum, speaking to Sky Sports: “Incredibly proud. When you turn up here in Pakistan you know you are gong to have to work incredibly hard and will be tested in different ways on and off the field. But the guys stuck together and wanted to take the game and our mantra forward. There were times we could have easily lost games but they found a way and we walk away with some fond memories."

On scoring 506 on day one of the first Test in Rawalpindi: “That’s more than I thought we would get! The way Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett started laid the marker out about where this team wants to be and how brave they will be. To play the role the team needs you to play rather than being caught in your own stuff. That allowed us to force a result in that game and maybe the series would have been different had we not gone down that route.

“There’s been some really defining moments. I thought the skipper was absolutely magnificent on and off the field. Everyone sees the decisions he makes on the field, but it is his man management and ability get the best out of every player off the field which is the most impressive part.”

  18. 'The support we have had has been incredible'published at 06:26 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

    Ben StokesImage source, Getty Images

More from Ben Stokes, speaking at the presentation: “If I had to pinpoint everyone I would be here for a while as everyone has stood up at some point and delivered some kind of match-winning performance. But Harry Brook has been unbelievable this series, scoring the amount of runs and the way he has done it is a serious treat to watch. The calmness he has at such a young age is class.

“And Rehan, gosh, 18 years old. The confidence he has in himself to go out there. He is not the finished article but to have that ability to affect the game is exciting going forward for English cricket. I won’t forget that cap presentation before the match. That experience itself was incredible.

“We knew what cricket means to Pakistan and what it meant for us to be here. The support we have had not just from our amazing Barmy Army throughout the three games has been incredible. We have got the best fans in the world, but the people of Pakistan who came out and cheered the game of cricket on, we felt the cricket we played was being celebrated and everyone enjoyed their time. We came here to win but we also came to play an exciting brand of cricket and to get people in to watch. I want to say thank you to the people of Pakistan.”

Ben Duckett speaking to BBC Sport: "I'm enjoying batting out here. The success in the T20 gave us a boost. Against a decent team you still have to put the runs in.

"We've won pretty convincingly. We'll look back on this and realise how incredibly we've done.

On the Ashes selection: "I'll certainly try and put the attack through. Am i going to score as consistently in England? Probably not but my job is to get runs.

"I've got a bit of a break now so it will be good to relax."
