It's been a little bit of help yourself for Ben Duckett. It's runs all around the ground which shows how much New Zealand have missed their line and length.

They've been wayward and Duckett has been good enough to capitalise.

Even at 2am poor Gilbert will be shuddering.

New Zealand's other debutant Scott Kuggeleijn enters the attack and hits Ollie Pope on the grille with a bouncer first up.

Pope is fine but the rules are he needs a concussion test so the players will take a drink.

Ollie Pope may as well go and put his feet up on one of the grassy banks over at fine leg at the minute because this is the Ben Duckett show.

Tim Southee can only stand and watch the ball race away off the bat of the England opener once again.

Duckett has made a great return to Test cricket, and a better fit to Bazball than Lees. Very different challenge here than his success in sweeping spinners to all parts on the sub-continent, but a confident start.

Ben Duckett brings up a 36-ball fifty in the first session of Test with his 10th four.

Imagine saying that a year ago.

The Kiwi commentators are purring as Ben Duckett strikes two more boundaries in Blair Tickner's over. The fifty partnership is up from 44 deliveries.

Seventeen runs come from the over and England will have their sights set on 180 having reached the halfway stage of this T20 innings.

  9. Eng 60-1published at 9.3 overs

    The best two yet!

Ben Duckett drives once straight and then a little squarer.

  10. Eng 52-1published at 9 overs

Ollie Pope skips down the pitch to Tim Southee now in another clear sign of business, and mild aggression.

Up in the dressing room Ben Stokes is in his training kit which is either a sign of the times or remarkably brave given England were 27-9 the last time they played a pink-ball Test in New Zealand.

  11. Eng 47-1published at 8 overs

    And another for Ben Duckett...

Blair Tickner drops just a little short and the left-hander climbs in to hit his fifth four.

He's already made Tim Southee spread fielders into the deep.

  13. Eng 41-1published at 7 overs

    Duckett 24, Pope 10

Full and swinging again from Southee but Duckett again needs little invitation to attack. He whips the ball off his toes and it's bounding into the boundary sponge before long.

Ollie Pope gets out the cover drive later in the over too.

If you were wondering England whether were going to change their plans, you've already got your answer.

With a receding mullet and bushy moustache, Blair Tickner looks to be a trilby away from a cartoon character in a comedy disguise.

His right-arm seam is not fearsome but probing. He's like a quicker, bouncier Colin de Grandhomme who looks like he actually enjoys bowling.

Fascinating you say? I can think of other words... I'm afraid I can't help you but I bet someone reading this can.

Ollie Pope, meanwhile, is off the mark with a boundary through the leg side.

    Shot!

Neil Wagner's stomp gets a little stompier as Ben Duckett drives the ball back past him for four. It's another no-ball too. You'd think he'd have learned.
