Very frustrated that I will miss Brook's double century in the next hour or so as I fly from Bohol to Manila in the Philippines. Can you tell him to slow down a bit when you get the chance.

    Root 30, Brook 63

No more runs off Matt Henry's over.

A shorter ball rises on Brook and hits the splice of his bat. He considers trying a single but thinks better of it.

The young Yorkshire batter has not been entirely comfortable facing Henry since the lunch interval.

    That's the century partnership!

Brook crashes two through the covers and that's a fantastic recovery from what was an extremely precarious situation for England.

  4. Eng 118-3published at 33 overs

Oooh, big waft from Brook off the final ball of the over.

A touch of movement from Mitchell and Brook inside-edges between pad and wicket - it runs away for two, but New Zealand won't mind that.

  5. Eng 116-3published at 32.5 overs

Daryl Mitchell's on to replace Tim Southee and Root loosens the pressure valve a little, working his first ball square for two.

Michael Bracewell's magic hands cut off a drive through the covers - the very tips of his fingers are enough to kill the momentum of the ball as he dives at full strength.

  6. Eng 111-3published at 32 overs

Three maidens out of four for New Zealand as Matt Henry becalms Harry Brook.

Tom Blundell snaffles down the leg-side - Brook declines the chance to put a bat on it.

  7. Eng 111-3published at 31 overs

Still no dice for Root off the bowling of Tim Southee as the former England skipper endures a second maiden over.

A sharp drive picks out Michael Bracewell in the covers, while an attempted cut through the slips is also blocked off.

He's taking up guard about a foot outside his crease - walk any further and he'll end up in the Cook Strait.

Tim Southee's bowling in this innings: 0% full, 79% good length and 21% short. 13 overs, 5 maidens, went for 30 runs, took 1 wickets with an economy of 2.31.Image source, Getty Images

Harry Brook is rewriting how to bat in Tests. Some players get over-coached and lose their flair, but if he keeps playing like this he's just got to be left to his own devices. He's a pretty orthodox player with no particular weaknesses so the sky is the limit.

    Root 26, Brook 58

Brook finds the gap where Root did not, picking the length from Matt Henry and driving past mid-off to the ropes.

Good reply from Henry, drawing a play and miss from the young Yorkshireman. He wasn't getting anywhere near that.

  10. Eng 107-3published at 29 overs

One way of stopping Harry Brook in this kind of form is simply to keep him down the other end.

Joe Root plays out a Tim Southee maiden. Lovely high elbow as he drives the final ball of the over to mid-off, but no luck on this occasion.

Well, Danny, I bought a multi-pack of miniature crisp-equivalents just before the start of play and I've already finished all six.

    Brook's influence is everywhere.

I’ve just smashed a whole bag of mini eggs at this time of the morning. I’m blaming Harry Brook.

Brook and Root need to get warm in these cool Wellington conditions. What better way then to hurry through consecutive singles, dropping the ball into the short covers.

A watchful start from the England pair. Harry Brook opens the face of his bat and plays the New Zealand captain out into a gap in the covers for two.

"Just Can't Get Enough" plays out from a PA system which hasn't made it past 2010 all day.

Matt Henry at the other end.

Right then. New Zealand are out on the field and Joe Root and Harry Brook are heading out to join them.

It's looking decidedly gusty at the Basin Reserve now, which could prove challenging for the home bowlers.

Tim Southee is at the top of his mark, let's go.

In complete agreement with my countryman in Montreal (23:45). 5pm starts are perfect for New York. Kids working on homework. Dog walks done. Peace and quiet to see England score at 6 an over after lunch.

I hope you've all been working on your Women's T20 World Cup team of the tournament.

My colleague Marc has been putting his together - he reckons it might be a bit bowler-heavy, but when you've got a batting line-up like that then when is your tail ever going to reach the crease?

England will be facing off against South Africa in the second semi-final on Friday (13:00 GMT), hoping to join champions Australia in the final. We'll be covering that match live, so stay up with us through the night, catch a few Zzzs then we'll meet again for that massive tie.

The freedom that Harry Brook is playing with has been incredible. The confidence that he's got, even when he's mishitting them, they're going over fielders' heads or they're missing them.

He's always proactive and trying to take the scoreboard forward. That will take the pressure off Joe Root.

But I think the old, wily head of Root will also be thinking that later on there will be some tired boys in the bowling attack that you can take advantage of.

The run map shows Harry Brook scored 51 with 10 fours, 1 three, and 8 singles for England

Brook is like Hick should have been. Dominant, unrelenting, dreamy.
