Eng 218-3published at 50 overs
Dare I say it, but even if this pair have batted well, this pitch doesn't really seem to have done much after the first hour?
I was knee-deep in "Did they forget to bring the lawnmower?" tweets at 21-3.
England in full control on day one - closing on 315-3 as rain curtails play
Root makes serene century off 182 balls
Brook reaches 150 off 145 balls - his fourth ton in five Tests

Whoops!
Southee holds onto the ball in his delivery stride and collapses onto the pitch.
A wry grin from the New Zealand captain as he gets to his feet... but I imagine it'll be wiped from his face after the following delivery as Brook gets on top of the ball and powers the ball to the ropes and past the diving deep cover fielder.
Well, that sounded heavenly!
Root's turn to get in on the action, getting on top of more short stuff from Wagner. He crashes his pull to the boundary, the sound of ball on bat echoing around the ground.
64 runs off Wagner's 10 overs thus far.
Brook steps back and crashes Wagner down the ground for four.
He makes it look effortless.
Root 59, Brook 112
No further concerns in the over for the England pair and Brook brings up 200 with a meaty pull. Devon Conway picks it up on the boundary, but it's enough for another milestone.
That was nearly the partnership breaker!
Bit of a nip-back from Southee and Brook inside edges - it absolutely flies off his bat to the boundary at fine leg.
A rare false shot from Brook, who's rarely looked troubled since Matt Henry left the attack.

Tom Ruzyllo: Harry Brook doesn’t acknowledge pressure, he doesn’t register scoreboards, he doesn’t even know what format he’s in. As far as he's concerned, he grabs his bat, hits it about a bit, then gets confused why he’s wearing whites & eating lunch in the middle of a big T20.

Root 58, Brook 106
Well, there's no hiding of Neil Wagner - he's simply switched ends to replace Michael Bracewell.
England work singles through the gaps before Joe Root tops off the over with a textbook cover drive for four. Lovely stuff.

They were circumspect after the lunch break, showed respect to the bowlers but as Harry Brook has gone through his innings he has been imperious.
He leaves you scratching your head as a bowler about where you can bowl to him.

Jessica Kitching: Fell asleep at 29-3, woke up 3 hours later to Harry Brook doing Harry Brook things!
New Zealand captain Tim Southee returns to the attack to replace Wagner. The third seamer hasn't had much impact thus far but the Black Caps can't afford to hide a seamer when they've only got three of them.
Southee immediately calms things down a bit - just the three runs off it.

Harry Brook's fourth Test ton and surely the best, given the conditions and score when he came in. There's been a real master-and-apprentice feel about this partnership, but Brook has outshined even Joe Root. These are England's four and five for some time to come. Everyone else - including Jonny Bairstow - will have to fit in around them.

lamda pi: Take a bow Sir Harry Brook. Classy, smart knock.
No further runs off the over as everyone takes a second to catch their breath.

And Harry Brook doesn't wait to follow!
He cuts Bracewell to the boundary for his fourth Test century. This is just his sixth Test match and he's currently averaging 90.75.
A remarkable start to a Test career.
Root gets there first!
He watches the first two balls of Michael Bracewell's over before pushing into the covers for his 57th international half-century.
Joe Root farms the strike for Neil Wagner's over, running two twice before taking the strike again off the final ball of the over, pulling to backward square for a single.
He's now onto 49, Brook's on 99 - which milestone will we reach first?
Root takes the single off the final ball of the over, running the ball into the covers, and Harry Brook will have to wait a little longer for that hundred chance.
