I'm not sure if it'll work, Dudi, but if it doesn't, it won't be for lack of trying!

Three boundaries in succession for Harry Brook. A beautiful cover drive, a powerful cut to dismiss a short wide one and then a flamboyant drive that slices off the outside half of the bat.

England have their approach and it looks like they're sticking to it.

It is such a bowling pitch and Stokes said in the interview that they will still play with their big hitting technique. Will this actually work?

  3. Eng 28-3published at 8 overs

Henry is on it so far! He squares Brook up now with another delivery on the perfect line for this pitch.

The ball flies off the edge again but this time in between third slip and gully, away for four very useful runs.

Mark Caleb Dorey: Thanks England for reminding me what Test cricket used to be like! How very nostalgic!

Andrew Morris: I know New Zealand are excited for this and all, but would they want to face Anderson, Broad, and Robinson on this track!?

    Carl Carritt: What. A. Catch

It's all been a bit a pokey and hard-handed from England, hasn't it? Like we thought, this is a good challenge on a green pitch. That Bracewell catch had shades of Ben Stokes at Trent Bridge during Broad's 8-15.

  6. Eng 24-3published at 7 overs

Harry Brook is up and running in confident manner, a step down the pitch and punching the ball through mid-wicket for three.

What a start for New Zealand. Southee and Henry have really made the most of the conditions and the catching has been excellent too.

    Duckett c Bracewell b Southee 9 (Eng 21-3)

    What a catch!

Ben Duckett on the drive, doesn't get to the pitch of the ball as Tim Southee attacks him from around the wicket and the ball flies to the left of Michael Bracewell at third slip.

The fielder dives at full stretch to get his left hand to it, the ball bobbles out but he gets hold of it again to complete a stunning catch.

England are in trouble early in Wellington.

Since 2010, teams winning the toss at the Basin have won seven, drawn five and lost three Tests.

Captains winning the toss have decided to bowl in 13 of those 15 occasions, and have won six, drawn four and lost three.

New Zealand have won the toss eight times and have decided to bowl seven times. In the games that they decided to bowl, they won four times and drew thrice.

    Eng 21-2

A sigh of relief for Root and England. Ball-tracking shows it was umpire's call on impact and going over the top.

Root could probably have relaxed after the first replay but it looked pretty close on first viewing. New Zealand have two wickets but they're down to their final review.

Big moment. Has Joe Root gone first ball?

He is down the pitch but is rapped on the knee-roll. This could be close.

What a comeback from Matt Henry!

Very next ball, the seamer comes in and hits a brilliant line and length, very little in the way of lateral movement but it finds the edge as Pope goes forward to defend.

The ball flies to Michael Bracewell at third slip and he takes a sharp chance.

  12. Eng 21-1published at 5.4 overs

    Duckett 9, Pope 10

Gorgeous. Just gorgeous from Ollie Pope.

Down the track to Henry and yet still manages to get himself into position to play a classic drive through extra cover for four.

Duckett needs some luck after attempting to whip Southee leg side and getting a leading edge that loops over the slip cordon.

Still, it's two runs to the total and already it is looking like every one of them will count in this match.

Also, technically it was 3.4 overs...

  17. Eng 9-1published at 4 overs

Glorious shot. A little shimmy down the pitch from Ollie Pope and he flicks the ball through the leg side for the first boundary of the innings.

That's one way to try and deal with the movement on a green seamer!

    Crawley c Blundell b Henry 2 (Eng 5-1)

A thin edge and New Zealand have the early breakthrough.

Just a hint of movement off the seam for Matt Henry, who has started superbly, and full enough that Zak Crawley pokes at it outside off.

The England opener tries to withdraw the bat but too late, a feather of a nick through to Blundell behind the stumps.

This is a good ground, the oldest active Test venue in New Zealand, dripping in character and history. It also encourages captains to field first - I make it that Southee is the 14th consecutive skipper to win the toss and field in Tests here. A moving ball is a good Test for England - almost all of their 10 wins in 11 matches have come on flat pitches. The one defeat, against South Africa at Lord's, was when there was a decent amount of assistance for the bowlers.

  20. Eng 5-0published at 3 overs

Crawley adds a single off his hip early in Southee's over to get to the safety of the non-striker's end.

Duckett is then drawn into playing at a wide one but gets away with it. Another over down against this new ball.
