  1. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 160.2 overs

    Southee c sub (Potts) b Leach 2 (NZ 482-8)

Tim Southee goes big... but there's no repeat of his brilliant first-innings knock.

A horrible slash to point as he attempts to go over mid-wicket but instead skies Jack Leach into the hands of substitute fielder Matthew Potts.

    Leach has deserved that.

  2. NZ 482-7published at 160 overs

"Come on, Brooky lad!" bellows Ben Foakes before the final ball of the over, which is tapped down the ground by Tim Southee. The crowd warmly applaud his efforts.

Jack Leach continues with the old ball.

It's probably unbefitting of how we might have expected Harry Brook would take his first wicket. We'd maybe expect him to blow middle stump out!

But thrown the ball almost in desperation by Ben Stokes, he has delivered.

  4. NZ 478-7published at 159 overs

Harry Brook into his sixth over, he has 1-20. The third new ball is due in an over so this really will be his last six balls of the match.

It happens in cricket occasionally when you have a brain fade. Michael Bracewell forgetting what you're told about batting and running your bat in as a six-year-old and it's cost him dearly.

  6. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 158.2 overs

    Bracewell run out (Stokes/Foakes) 8 (NZ 478-7)

Sloppy schoolboy stuff from Michael Bracewell. He's far too casual as the throw from a limping Ben Stokes comes into Ben Foakes, who takes the bails off, one handed, in a calm and unfussy manner.

TV replays show Bracewell's bat is in the air at the point where the stumps are broken. Great work by Foakes.

The second of two slightly bizarre wickets. England will not mind a jot.

  7. Umpire reviewpublished at 04:15 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2023

Ben Foakes has whipped the bails off after spotting Michael Bracewell coasting into the striker's end following a pull from Tom Blundell.

The umpires are checking if he is home.

We know full well, on pitches not too dismilar, England chased down some ridiculous totals. Locals tell us this pitch will be good for batting on the fifth day.

  9. NZ 476-6published at 158 overs

Another bouncer from Harry Brook and he's pull behind square by Tom Blundell, who has adjusted to the pace. Or rather lack of it. Zak Crawley picks the ball up this time and dives to prevent the boundary.

    Harry Brook appreciation post.

Look at that poise and grace in his delivery stride. *Hearts in eyes emoji.

Jack Leach with four dots before Tom Blundell is able to clip a single to leg. Ben Stokes happy to stick with Harry Brook for now.

It never ceases to amaze me how many of your correspondents still fail to "get" Bazball. "Batting them out of the game" is so last year, and, with the exception of Root, we don't have the batsmen capable of doing that with any certainty. It's all about going for the win in as entertaining a way as possible, and if we lose a few along the way, so be it. You may not agree with that philosophy, but you're going to have to get used to it.

  13. NZ 471-6published at 156 overs

A hint of swing for Harry Brook into the right-handed Tom Blundell. Brook drops his fourth ball in short in attempt to bounce Blundell, who pulls him to the boundary for four as Zak Crawley fails to pick it up against the background of the crowd.

Suspect we might see Brook replaced by a frontline bowler soon-ish.

Harry Brook's bowling in this innings: 0% full, 83% good length and 17% short. 5 overs, 0 maidens, went for 16 runs, took 1 wickets with an economy of 3.20.

Good evening from Los Angeles. Let’s just hope the weather stays clear so we can have a ding-dong run chase tomorrow like we had last year at Trent Bridge.

Jack Leach into his 58th over and he oversteps with his fourth ball. Tom Blundell opts for a safety first approach as four runs are added to the score. Blundell is on 78.

    Harry Brook will continue.

I would rather face the gun bowler than the gentle medium pace of someone like Harry Brook. It's the rhythm of batting.

Harry Brook gets another over as a reward for that breakthrough. He draws an edge from Michael Bracewell off his fifth ball which races away down to third where Ben Duckett pulls out a dive to prevent the four.

That wicket has lifted England's spirits on a long day in the field.

Jack Leach gets one to skid through and strike Michael Bracewell is struck on the pad. Leach is pleading with his skipper to review it, but Ben Stokes thinks it's hit him outside off.

The TV replays show the England captain was correct.
