    Vipers 17-2 (target 216)

The youngster has really deserved that.

Lizzie Scott produces a beautiful inswinger which deceives Georgia Elwiss and cleans her up between bat and pad.

  2. Postpublished at 9 overs

    Vipers 16-1 (target 216)

Linsey Smith beats the edge of Georgia Elwiss' bat and Lauren Winfield-Hill has the bails off in a flash. She asks the question but the square leg umpire says 'not out'.

Just a couple added - Vipers need 200 from 41 now. That's 4.88 per over.

  3. Postpublished at 8 overs

    Vipers 14-1 (target 216)

Lizzie Scott is bowling to her field - four in a row on the off side plus gully Sterre Kalis, who make a great save to keeper Maia Bouchier to a single.

Georgia Elwiss adds a single from the final ball of the over but still no sign of a boundary.

  4. Postpublished at 7 overs

    Vipers 12-1 (target 216)

This really is excellent by Linsey Smith. Only one loose ball, which Maia Bounchier hits straight to mid-off. Just a single from it and Smith has 1-4 from her four overs.

  5. Postpublished at 6 overs

    Vipers 11-1 (target 216)

Don't recall a shot in anger yet by the Vipers.

Just two runs from that over by Lizzie Scott - but the 2020 & 2021 winners know how to get the job done on the big occasion.

  6. Postpublished at 5 overs

    Vipers 9-1 (target 216)

Georgia Elwiss and Maia Bouchier exchange singles but that is a great over for the Diamonds.

Linsey Smith gives Elwiss an anxious moment with her final ball which comes in with the arm and keeps a bit low, but she is solidly behind it.

BBC Radio Solent commentator Melissa Story

“Look at the reaction from Diamonds! They are up for this – they’ve been the bridesmaids twice and they want to go one better.

“Great ball – the line was perfect and just enough movement to catch the edge.”

  8. wicket

WICKET McCaughan c LWH b Smith 2published at 4.1 overs

    Vipers 7-1 (target 216)

Ella McCaughan pushes forward in defence but she's either doing so down the wrong line or there's a little bit of spin because the ball finds the edge and Lauren Winfield-Hill takes the catch.

Georgia Elwiss is the new Vipers batter.

  9. Postpublished at 4 overs

    Vipers 7-0 (target 216)

Just a leg bye from the final ball of another good over by Lizzie Scott. This is exactly what Diamonds want - keep it tight and try to induce a mistake by the Vipers batters.

  10. Postpublished at 3 overs

    Vipers 6-0 (target 216)

Great stuff by Linsey Smith. Right on the money to Maia Bouchier and there is just the second maiden over of the game.

  11. Postpublished at 2 overs

    Vipers 6-0 (target 216)

Lizzie Scott only played two of the group games for Diamonds, so opening the bowling in a final at the home of cricket is a big test of nerve.

Like Vipers seamer Lauren Bell at the start of the game, she finds plenty of early swing.

The Vipers openers take a second following a leg-side wide and Bouchier may well have been run out by a direct hit.

Wide apart, a decent start by Scott.

  12. Postpublished at 1 over

    Vipers 1-0 (target 216)

Linsey Smith bowls the opening over with her left-arm spin.

Ella McCaughan only just keeps out a second-ball yorker but pushes into the covers from the final delivery for a single.

    Diamonds 215-9 v Vipers 0-0

The umpires are on the way.

Ella McCaughan and Maia Bouchier will open for Southern Vipers.

To score 216 to win requires a scoring rate of at least 4.32 per over.

The Vipers are looking for their fifth title - 2 x Heyhoe Flint Trophy, 1 x Charlotte Edwards Cup and 1 x Super League so far.

Head coach Charlotte Edwards has already seen her Vipers side lift the 20-over trophy which bears her name this season.

Is she going to see them add the 50-over prize, named after one of her predecessors as England captain and complete a white-ball double?

The answers to those questions are coming up. It's just a shame there aren't more people in the ground to watch it happen.

We've had seven centuries so far in this year's Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy and Georgia Elwiss is the only player to score one for the Vipers, making 115 at a run a ball against South East Stars at Hove.

She shared a partnership of 160 for the fifth wicket with Emily Windsor, who made 90, as they recovered from 74-4 to post 306-9 and won the game by 133 runs.

Elwiss has played for England on 54 occasions across the formats, and plays for Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred.

She's already taken a brilliant catch and run out Lauren Winfield-Hill in this match. What can she do with the bat after making only 14 in last year's final?

  16. Vipers batting has depthpublished at 13:59 British Summer Time 25 September 2022

Northern Diamonds 215-9 v Southern Vipers - between innings

That feels like a decent total by the Diamonds - and a whole lot better than the 183 all out they posted in last year's final, which Vipers won by three wickets.

Lauren Winfield-Hill's run out, as they slumped from 114-1 to 119-5 in the space of 15 balls looked like it would cost them dear, but Bess Heath and Leah Dobson kept their heads to see them past 200.

However, Vipers have depth to their batting - seven of their players have a half-century to their credit in this season's competition, compared to just three for Diamonds.

All seven are in the team for this final, so Vipers will be hopeful of lifting the trophy for a third time.

Georgia Adams didn't manage the hat-trick, but she finishes with figures of 3-34.

Can Diamonds defend this total - or will it be three in a row for Vipers?
