Tip and run from Ben Duckett off Anrich Nortje, as he drills one to Temba Bavuma. The South Africa captain slides, picks up and throws at the stumps in one motion.

Duckett dives to make his ground, as the ball whistles past the stumps from Bavuma's throw. That would have been close.

An effortless flick from Harry Brook through mid-wicket a couple of balls later brings him another boundary. He's getting going now.

Harry Brook, clean-shaved and fresh-faced, with a thick inside edge off the first delivery of Marco Jansen's second over. The ball misses the stumps and the races away for four.

As a wise cricket sage once said: it's not how, it's how many.

Three balls later and it's a more conventional route to the boundary as Brook transfers his weight on to his back foot and square drives it to the fence for four. Nicely done.

The moustachioed Anrich Nortje into the attack.

There's a touch of Merv Hughes about his demeanor as well, even though the bowling action is quite different from the legendary Aussie quick.

A bit of let off for Ben Duckett with his fourth ball as the left-hander inside edges it into the flap of his pad. A maiden to start from Nortje.

Left-armer Marco Jansen squares up Ben Duckett with his first delivery, but the left-hander gets up high to the next delivery to punch it through the covers for three.

That brings Harry Brook on strike and he's a little more circumspect at the moment as he sees off the next four deliveries without scoring.

An expansive drive from Harry Brook to the second ball of Lungi Ngidi's fourth over has the South Africa fielders interested as the ball flashes down to third man.

Ngidi has his hands on his head a couple of balls later when Ben Duckett chases a wide one with a wild wield of the willow.

A touch more composure needed from these two needed, perhaps?

    This really is quality bowling.

Wayne Parnell gets his name in the scorebook as he pins Dawid Malan in the crease, the ball striking him on the knee roll on the back pad.

There's a bit of a conflab between Malan and Ben Duckett at the non-striker's end about possibly reviewing it, but Malan knows in his heart of heart that he's toast.

Eeesh. Tough start for new batter Ben Duckett as he's given a working over by Lungi Ngidi in his first three balls.

Duckett is rapped on the pads, then beaten outside by a jaffa from Ngidi. The final ball of the South African's over clips the shoulder of the bat and flies over the top of the slip cordon.

He's really hit his straps this morning.

Gone. Lungi Ngidi cleans up Jason Roy with a fine delivery.

A vicious full ball bowled the England opener through the gate and after it nipped back off the seam.

    A superb piece of bowling.

Wayne Parnell's fourth delivery of the over is a fraction too straight to Jason Roy, who is able to scuttle across his stumps and work it for four through mid-wicket. Nicely done.

This has been a tricky period for England's openers. Both Wayne Parnell and Lungi Ngidi have tested the judgement of Jason Roy and Dawid Malan with the ball hooping round corners.

Two slips in place as Ngidi begins his third over.

  17. Not outpublished at 08:27 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2023

Well, well, well. Jason Roy is a lucky boy.

The ball-tracking technology shows the ball is just skipping over the top of the stumps.

Dawid Malan, seemingly, was encouraging Jason Roy to review that one. Roy himself did not look entirely convinced.
