SportingBadger: I understand that it's not a full strength side right now, with Bairstow, Root, Stokes, Livingstone, and Wood to come back, but ODI form since last year is starting to get a bit worrying. Players involved are more than capable of winning games convincingly.

    Buttler 29, Moeen 5

Maharaj nearly does Buttler as one sticks in the surface. He's through his shot too early and it balloons past short cover.

Another tidy over from Maharaj as he concedes only three. The scoring rate has slowed down noticeably post Brook's wicket.

  3. drinks break

    Eng 161-4published at 30 overs

    Buttler 28, Moeen 3

Markram has gotten away with a couple of poor deliveries down the leg side. One in the previous over and one in this one.

A mistake from Klaasen though as he disturbs the bails before the ball hits his gloves and it nets England a no-ball. Buttler can't capitalise on the free hit as Markram darts it in full.

The players and umpires will take another well deserved drinks break.

"Catch it fella, dive Temba!" shouts stand-in wicketkeeper Klaasen. It landed well in front of him at short mid-wicket as Moeen looked to turn it away.

Spin seems to be doing the trick for South Africa, a wicket and a couple of quiet overs. Just what they needed.

Eventually it's the part timer that gets the breakthrough for South Africa. Brook will be gutted with that, he'd played so well.

Rebuilding of sorts required now. Woakes and Curran to come if needed but ideally, England don't want them in anytime soon.

Oh dear, just as I say that...

Harry Brook has to go. He sees mid-off up inside the circle and looks to go over but it takes the outer half of the blade and goes straight to Rassie van der Dussen at deep extra cover. That's a big blow.

Just two off that over in the end including that tight single and a leg-bye.

This has been a very good stand for England so far.

  8. Eng 153-3published at 26.1 overs

They set off for a quick single and Brook would have most definitely been on his way had Bavuma hit the stumps at the non-striker's end!

The runs are flowing at a steady pace now for England courtesy of Harry Brook.

He danced down the wicket and drilled one through cover before getting off strike.

Next there was that botched review from South Africa.

Indeed it is. Buttler was looking to reverse sweep it and not only was he well outside the line of off stump but he also got a bit of glove on it.

  11. South Africa reviewpublished at 25.4 overs

There's a review for lbw against Jos Buttler, but this might be a poor one from South Africa.

Thanks Tim. Heard one of the commentators say earlier that 300 is on the cards. Could be more if one of these two stick around till the end. Boy have I enjoyed watching Brook so far.

This is a good platform for England with Harry Brook going well. Can they kick on turn it into a defendable score? My colleague Anurag Hegde will take you through the next 25 overs.

A run out chance off Wayne Parnell's first ball as Harry Brook has to turn on his heels after being sent back by Jos Buttler. Brook looked in trouble but the throw from backward point misses the stumps.

Four dots from Parnell before some fine strokeplay from Brook off the final two balls. He cashes in on a short ball to pull the South African paceman for six over mid-wicket, then backs it up with a glorious cover drive for four.

We need Root back in the side....he was the glue while the rest done their thing.

Harry Brook and Jos Buttler watchful to Anrich Nortje who has pushed the speedometer today. Brook defends a slower ball with his penultimate delivery before a controlled pull for a single to keep the strike.

A change of bowling as Wayne Parnell replaces Keshav Maharaj.

Harry Brook puffs his cheeks as he prepares to face Keshav Maharaj.

A carbon copy from Brook's six a little earlier has he quickly gets himself back in his crease and mullers the left-arm spinner over the ropes again.

Brook picked up the length really quickly. It's not that short from Maharaj, either.

    Steady now, Harry.

He looks to take on Anrich Nortje with a hook shot but the ball gets a little big on him and a top edge hangs in the air en route to backward square.

Fortunately for Brook it thuds into the the turf. He castigates himself with a few choice words when he reaches the non-striker's end. Doubtless Buttler will give him a word of advice at the end of the over.
