It isn't pretty for South Africa at the minute. They've well and truly lost the plot in the last couple overs or so. A flurry of boundaries, a heap of extras, an injured Parnell...

England are in the driver's seat. They dictate the terms now.

Parnell is in some trouble here. Buttler drilled one straight back and Parnell stuck out his boot instinctively. It hit him right at the tip of his big toe by the looks of it. He tries to run in and bowl but he only makes it a couple of steps into his run-up before going down. The physio is out there.

Buttler has gone into overdrive! He scythes one over cover to start the over and follows it up by smoking a length delivery over the long-on for a maximum. Two clean hits.

The floodgates have well and truly opened. Nortje bowls a gentle half-tracker that Moeen heaves away to the square leg fence. That prompts Nortje to over-correct and go full and this time, Moeen smacks it straight back over his head.

And he doesn't stop there. He picks the slower delivery, finds the gap at mid-wicket and whips it away for another boundary.

  6. Eng 233-4published at 39 overs

That over was a tale of freebies for England. Eleven of them, aren't England lucky?

To add to that, Moeen also creamed a full delivery straight back past the bowler so massive over in the end.

Let me do the maths, hold on...

    17 runs for England!

  7. Eng 222-4published at 38.2 overs

Something very interesting has happened here. It should've just been an ordinary leg-bye but when the throw came back in to Klaasen, it ricocheted off his hands and hit the glove that he'd tossed away before collecting it.

So it'll be five penalty runs for England. Freebies.

Ngidi goes for the slower delivery first up and Moeen clubs it over mid-off. Ngidi responds well though with a couple of dots.

Just a couple of singles follow so it's all very steady at the minute.

I love the ODI format, but it’s losing purpose and I’m not sure it has a future.T20 provides excitement, attracts a wider audience and has potential for growth, while Test cricket is there for the purists and continues to create iconic moments. However, the ODI World Cup is, in my opinion, a greater tournament than the T20 World Cup. It would such a shame to lose it.

Buttler and Moeen have put up fifty now. The partnership is currently worth 56 and it's come off 59 deliveries.

Moeen feasts on a short and wide delivery by slapping it to the cover fence.

Remember it's only Woakes, Curran and Rashid to follow so England need this pair to be out there for as long as possible. Can't help but feel they're missing a bit of firepower down the order with the likes of Livingstone and Jacks missing.

It is quite hot out there and Buttler is looking a little worse for wear having been out there for a while now. He's having a quick drink.

A stifled appeal for lbw from South Africa as Ngidi's slower ball snuck past Buttler's inside edge. Umpire Erasmus was having none of it though, he walked away immediately. It looked like it was going down leg comfortably too and South Africa have burned all their reviews anyway.

Three singles and a couple of extras from that over.

That's fifty for England's captain. He's played the situation very well today. Played second fiddle to Brook earlier and now he's taken charge and accelerated just when England needed him to.

Another big over too, 13 runs off it.

Have some of that! Moeen's joined the party. Maharaj serves up a juicy half-volley and Moeen slogs it over the deep mid-wicket fence.

Classic Buttler, reaches out and reverse-taps it for four. All along the ground too. Nice.

Ngidi is brought back into the attack and he bowls another impressive over. He was fantastic with the new ball today and was moving it all over the place. Not quite the same amount of assistance for him now though.

England are ticking it along, rotating the strike and making sure they get the odd boundary. Right approach if you ask me.

Is it controversial to say that for the protection of the game we know and love ODI format should be removed from international level? It served as the new and exciting format when introduced but that has been replaced by T20 cricket…

They say you can double your score after 30 overs and at that stage, England were 161. They've shown a lot more intent too since then so we might well be looking at a score that's comfortably over 300.

Buttler survives a scare as he nearly chipped one back to Maharaj, but it just goes over his outstretched arms.

  19. Eng 177-4published at 32 overs

Buttler's switched gears now, he follows up that maximum with a boundary as he carves a wide delivery to the deep cover fence. That one nearly went over the boundary too.

A very productive over for England, 13 runs off it.

That's gone a long way! Markram tosses it up and Buttler, with a lovely straight bat, smokes it over long-off.
