George Pears: The issue of Roy opening is still a problem. 1 century on a flat track where SA bowled poorly upfront doesn't solve that. Good bowlers sort him out more often than not. There are many better options. Hales and Jacks just to name 2. Time to look elsewhere

Marco South Africa's Marco Jansen (R) prepares to throw the ball as England's Captain Jos Buttler (C) grounds his bat and England's Dawid Malan (L) turns to make his ground during the third one day international (ODI) cricket match between South Africa and England at Mangaung Oval in KimberleyImage source, Getty Images

'Sticky' and 'tacky' are the adjectives being used to describe this pitch as another Marco Jansen seems to hold up on the surface and outfox Dawid Malan, fizzing past his outside edge again.

That's better from Malan, though, as he plays an expansive drive that is just clawed back on the boundary, with England running three.

Ben Wire: Watching England is like being a time-traveller. Just tuned in, and it's 1997 all over again.

  4. Eng 16-3published at 8 overs

It is very nearly four wickets for Lungi Ngidi and South Africa as Dawid Malan is completely outfoxed by a delivery that dies in the pitch a bit, leading him to mis-time a pull that lands just short of fine leg.

It looks very difficult for the England batters out there.

Temba Bavuma said the surface "gets deader under the lights", so this is already looking like a good toss to win.

Moses: This team is in trouble, I'm telling you the World Cup in India might be a very rude awakening, 50 over stuff is very different to the 20 over stuff

  6. Eng 15-3published at 7 overs

Lungi Ngidi may have taken the wickets but Marco Jansen has also contributed to this fine South Africa start, cranking up the pressure on the England batters.

Jansen bends his back with the final ball of his fourth over to try and tempt Jos Buttler into an expansive pull, but Buttler wisely leaves. Now it not the time for that.

  7. Eng 14-3published at 6 overs

Here comes the skipper Jos Buttler. He has rescued England before but it would take something pretty special to lift them up to a competitive score here.

  8. wicket

    Brook c Klaasen b Ngidi 6 (Eng 14-3)

    And another one!

It is a similar dismissal to Ben Duckett as Lungi Ngidi gets some extra bounce outside off stump and Harry Brook feathers an inside edge through to Klaassen.

Ngidi is now 3-7. England in big, big trouble.

  9. Eng 12-2published at 5 overs

Relief for Dawid Malan, who went 10 balls without scoring. But with the 11th he manages to get off the mark with a drive through the covers. It is not quite timed though and England can only run two.

  10. Eng 9-2published at 4 overs

There's plenty of chatter from the South Africa fielders as Lungi Ngidi comes steaming in to Harry Brook, giving him a stern examination first up.

Brook looks calm and unflustered as ever though and responds by punishing Ngidi's first bad ball of the day by clattering a drive through the covers.

    Lovely shot.

...and Harry Brook survives, widely leaving the ball outside his off stump.

Lungi Ngidi is on a hat-trick. Harry Brook is the new batter...

  13. wicket

    Duckett c Klaasen b Ngidi (Eng 5-2)

    Oh dear.

England in all sorts of trouble now as Lungi Ngidi gets one to leap up at Ben Duckett, who cannot deal with the extra bounce and feathers the ball through to wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen.

  14. Eng 5-1published at 3 overs

Ben Duckett is the new batter and joins Dawid Malan in the middle.

There's a stifled appeal as Marco Jansen gets one to jag back in and thump into Duckett's pads. Height was probably an issue though and the umpire shakes his head.

A nervy start from England. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma, complete with sunhat and shades, looks to have his game face on.

  15. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 2 overs

    Roy c Bavuma b Ngidi 1 (Eng 2-1)

That was coming. Jason Roy just never looked comfortable.

Lungi Ngidi beat his outside edge before Roy attempted a wild swing outside off stump.

The next ball he just lofted up straight to Temba Bavuma at mid-off for the simplest of catches.

A pretty soft dismissal. The perfect start for South Africa.

  16. Eng 1-0published at 1 over

There's a bit of swing for Marco Jansen first up as Jason Roy clips off his pads down to fine leg for a single.

A couple of slips then come in for Dawid Malan and Jansen finds a probing length that flashes past Malan's outside edge.

Good start by the South Africa quick.

  17. Postpublished at 11:01 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

England openers Jason Roy and Dawid Malan are out in the middle. Roy has started to show a little bit of form once more, can he continue here?

South Africa are ready to go too. De Kock, Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje are big misses. This is a chance for others to step up

The towering Marco Jansen will bowl first up...

  18. There is still plenty on the linepublished at 10:56 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

The ODI series may have gone but there is still a lot of importance attached to this match.

South Africa are in a perilous position in terms of securing an automatic place at the World Cup, sitting 10th in the standings with the top eight qualifying.

They need one more win from their final three matches - today against England and then two more against the Netherlands - to have any chance.

For England this forms part of their preparations for the defence of their World Cup title in India in the autumn.

It is hotpublished at 10:51 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

"I better put the sun cream on and hope for the best."

I think Harry Brook just summed it up well in his interview just then. It is very hot in Kimberley so we are all set for an on-time start.

There are a few suggestions of possible thunderstorms later in the evening but the forecast is largely clear.

So three changes for South Africa, with Quinton de Kock one of those missing out after taking a blow on the hand during the second match.

Anrich Nortje and Keshav Maharaj also miss out, with Reeza Hendricks, Tabraiz Shamsi and Sisanda Magala coming into the side.

Just the one change for England as Jofra Archer returns in place of Olly Stone, who impressed taking 2-58 in the second match.
