    We're back with Sisanda Magala.

His first ball is full and England skipper Jos Buttler hits it in front of mid-wicket. A good way to get things started for this over.

Malan and Buttler are rotating strike to build their partnership with four singles in this over.

Buttler is one run away from his half-century.

  2. dropped catch

On comes spinner Tabraiz Shamsi for his first spell of the day.

There have been 134 wickets taken by pace on this ground and only 28 wickets taken by spin, so an interesting choice for him to come on.

A googly from Shamsi is dropped by Reeza Hendricks as Dawid Malan looks to pull away. It goes straight through his fingertips and looked quite painful. He jogs off the pitch to have it looked at.

    Five runs from the over.

    Thank you Tom!

England have got a good partnership going so far, can Sisanda Magala break it?

It's overpitched by Magala and Dawid Malan pierces extra cover and the ball races away to the boundary for four.

  4. Eng 73-3published at 20 overs

You don't bowl there to Jos Buttler. Aiden Markram gently lobs one up again and Buttler helps himself to a four straight down the ground.

Dawid Malan joins the party as well! It is a nicely played reverse sweep that flies away to the rope.

The most productive over of the day for England after that tough start. Is the comeback on?

Here to guide you through the next 20 overs and find out is Aymen Babar.

    Buttler 30, Malan 17

The stocky frame of Sisanda Magala, who went for eight in his first over, comes trundling in again.

Dawid Malan thinks he has helped himself to a welcome boundary but a tidy bit of fielding from Temba Bavuma at mid-off means he has to settle for a single.

England's run rate has crept above three. Small but steady progress.

Here we go! Jos Buttler has got himself in and now he is putting his foot to the floor.

Aiden Markram gently tosses one up and with one leisurely swing of the bat Buttler sends the ball flying over long-off for the first six of the day.

    Hurrah, a boundary!

Sisanda Magala is the new bowler and his fourth delivery is clipped away by Jos Buttler through backward square and to the rope.

He thinks he has another with the final ball of the over but David Miller fields on the boundary and England can only run two.

Another change of bowling for South Africa and it is time for a bit of spin as Aiden Markram comes into the attack.

  8. Eng 43-3published at 16 overs

Jos Buttler pushes one off his pads and wide of the man at mid-wicket for a single, he moves to 15 from 34 deliveries. This is his slowest ODI innings when facing 30 balls or more.

Dawid Malan meanwhile is just 14 from 41. There have only been two boundaries in the entire match.

  9. drinks break

Lungi Ngidi comes in for his sixth over, just the three singles off it means he has impressive figures of 3-15.

It is time for a drinks break and South Africa can be well pleased with their efforts so far.

England, having lost the toss, are crawling along at 2.66 an over on a sticky surface with variable pace and bounce.

Is that escape the bit of fortune England needed? I'm not sure there would have been a way back if they lost Buttler there.

As it is England are finally starting to build a little bit of momentum.

Jos Buttler made it home - just.

It was a superb bit of fielding by David Miller, who collected the ball and threw in one motion while flying through the air.

    One for the cameras.

  13. Umpire reviewpublished at 13.1 overs

Uh oh, England attempt a risky second run but the throw is good and Jos Buttler may be struggling.

The third umpire will take a look.

  14. Eng 32-3published at 13 overs

Lungi Ngidi, who has taken all three wickets so far, is back for the 13th over as England look to turn the screw.

Four singles represents a decent return for England, who have struggled to go for more than two and over so far.

Dawid Malan, 10 from 34 balls, is starting to get a little frustrated out there as he struggles to find the middle of the bat.

Jos Buttler wanders down the crease to have a word. The last thing England need right now is a reckless shot and cheap wicket.

Relief for England as Jos Buttler seizes on a short and wide delivery from Marco Jansen and clatters the ball away for four to get off the mark after 14 deliveries.

It still looks very tricky for batting out there.

Change of bowling for South Africa as Wayne Parnell comes into the attack.

Dawid Malan is forced to fend off a back-of-a-length delivery outside off stump, opting against an attacking stroke as he cannot trust the bounce off this pitch. The next ball flashes past his outside edge.

South Africa have perfectly exploited the early conditions. England have trundled along at two an over (even I can work that out).
