  2. 'We want to get to the semi-finals'published at 20:32 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2023

Sri Lanka Chamari Atapattu: "We have a good culture in the team. We have a lot of youngsters, we share knowledge with them and the senior players have done well. They always think about the game and that is the secret.

"The wicket was really good for batting. I would definitely have batted first. I thought 140-150 was a good score and unfortunately we didn't get there because Shabnim Ismail and Marizanne Kapp bowled really well in the powerplay and that is why we didn't get 150.

"We have shocked big teams before and we have done it again. We want to get to the semi-finals. I hope we can get there because it is my eighth World Cup and I haven't been there yet so I want to be there with my team.

"I really liked that the crowd supported both teams. That is a really good thing for women's cricket."

  3. 'One game doesn't define us'published at 20:30 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2023

South Africa's captain Sune Luus: "First of all thank you to the crowd, I hope you keep coming back and enjoying women's cricket.

"Sri Lanka had a good partnership and we lacked that in our batting innings. I thought chasing 130 was a par score and that 140-150 would have been a good score on that pitch. I don't think Sri Lanka ran away with the game.

"I think one game doesn't define us. The World Cup has a long away to go. Marizanne Kapp and Shabnim Ismail were exceptional today. Lots of positives going into the next games."

Player of the match Sri Lanka's Chamari Atapattu: "I'm really happy. I always try my best and I try to lead from the front.

"I want to be a role model for the team. This is a prize for the whole team.

"Vishmi [Gunaratne] is a superstar. She is the Under-19s captain and I'm really happy about her.

"I just like to play my natural game freely."

This defeat for South Africa is only going to intensify the conversation about the omission of Dane van Niekerk for failing to reach the fitness standards required by Cricket South Africa.

However their side definitely looks a batter light. There isn't much they can change with the squad they have picked too.

How much are they going to rue Van Niekerk's absence?

All it's taken is one partnership from Sri Lanka. There was no partnership for South Africa, they lost regular wickets. Sri Lanka have done a fantastic job.

Here a couple more of the South Africa wickets to fall.

Those of Nadine de Klerk and Sune Luus.

Six South Africa batters made double figures, but their best partnership was 29. That has been the difference in this game.

Are we already in a position where we expect Australia and New Zealand to progress from Group 1?

That's not an ideal position to be in after one game of the tournament.

We could of course see more shocks over the next couple of weeks but those southern hemisphere sides will now be pretty confident of reaching the semi-finals.

There is genuine shock in the South Africa dugout.

They are sat there with steely looks on their faces. There are some with their heads in their hands.

They now potentially face a uphill battle to reach the semi-finals.

Oshadi Ranasinghe is going to bowl the final over.

Sri Lanka haven't bowled the overs in time so they are only allowed three fielders outside the ring for the final over.
