A fairly blunt assessment from New Zealand captain Suzie Bates after another dismal display form her side.

For South Africa, though, a win has given them renewed hope of progressing to the knockout stage in a home tournament.

  2. 'A brilliant bowling performance'published at 20:09 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2023

South Africa captain Sune Luus: "The spinners did a brilliant job tonight. But the seamer did to support them as well and finish the job off. It was a brilliant bowling performance by the whole team.

"Chloe Tryon - what a legend. To come back tonight and show her class was absolutely brilliant."

Chloe Tryon was named player of the match and deservedly so after big contributions with both bat and ball.

  4. 'It's embarrassing - simply not good enough'published at 20:08 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2023

New Zealand captain Sophie Devine: "Firstly, credit has to go to south Africa. They completely outplayed us today. To be honest, it's embarrassing.

"We've trained hard, put in all the work behind the scenes and then to come out and perform like that two games in a row is simply not good enough in international cricket.

"It was a competitive score but we always have the belief that we can chase down any score. We're going to have some looks in the mirror and some harsh discussions I think.

"You've got to let your emotions out, we've got a couple of days until our next game and we've got to let it out. We can't hold onto it and then we have to move on.

"Tonight's performance and the other night was not good enough."

  5. 'We knew it was do or die'published at 20:02 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2023

Player of the match, South Africa's Chloe Tryon: "After the first match, we knew what needed to come. We knew it was do or die from here on in. we knew how important this game was.

"We just went back to the basics, worked in partnerships, got the basics right and everything worked well today.

"We wanted it really badly, we were working really hard as a group. You could see the smiles on people's faces and they knew the job at hand.

"As a batting unit, we were maybe 15 or 20 runs short but we did the job with the ball. Everyone did really well today.

"I'm loving my role, I've been doing it for a little while now. It's just nice to challenge myself and take some key wickets today. We knew it wasn't over until the last wicket went down."

That shouldn't have been a difficult chase - 132 was a par score from South Africa.

But the hosts just had much more about them than New Zealand tonight.

This feels on the same level as that trouncing by Australia in the first game.

A dark night for New Zealand.

But South Africa are back in business.

Jonas b Kapp 1 (NZ 67 all out)

Marizanne Kapp finishes the job by making a mess of Fran Jonas' stumps!

For the second game running, New Zealand have been comprehensively beaten and their World Cup hopes are all but over.

For South Africa, though, a hugely disappointing loss to start the tournament can be put behind them and they are back in the hunt for a semi-final spot.

    Target 133

Eden Carson just about keeps out another full, straight delivery from Ismail to end the over.

Two overs to go. South Africa might fancy wrapping it up a little earlier.

    Here comes Marizanne Kapp.

New Zealand were down and out from very early on but the death knell truly rang when Sophie Devine was dismissed, lbw to Chloe Tryon.

A real fast bowler's wicket. Kerr had no answer for that.

Bowled her! Nine down, one to go for South Africa.

Full, straight and far too quick from Shabnim Ismail. Jess Kerr was nowhere near it.

  14. NZ 65-8published at 17 overs

    Target 133

Five singles from Tucker's over. The intensity in the game has completely disappeared now, both teams know how this is going to end - and so does everyone else.

The South Africa fans are having a lovely time in the stands and on the grass banks though.

Silence greeted that cover drive for four. But I rather enjoyed it.

  16. NZ 60-8published at 16 overs

    J Kerr 8, Carson 2

Jess Kerr plays one of the shots of the innings as she drives elegantly through the covers for four.

A gorgeous shot that was roundly ignored by all those in attendance in Paarl.

Another wicket to show you now. Chloe Tryon claimed her first with just her second ball as Maddy green gloved behind on the reverse sweep.

That left New Zealand five down and it has only got worse from there.

  18. NZ 53-8published at 15 overs

    Target 133

In theory, New Zealand need another 80 runs to win.

With five overs left, I can say with some certainty that that is not going to happen. New Zealand's World Cup hopes are hanging by a thread.

Yep, that's plumb. A third wicket for Mlaba as ball-tracking confirms the decision.

Lea Tahuhu played back, the ball turned just enough to beat the bat and hit her bang in front of the stumps.

It was crashing into middle and off. Mlaba is dancing and the celebrations are well underway in the stands.
