Sugandika Kumari should have just gone for the underarm, instead she has tried to throw it as hard as possible.

Bates would have been well out if it had hit the stumps.

  2. NZ 123-1published at 16 overs

Left arm spinner Sugandika Kumari comes into the attack.

Another chance missed for Sri Lanka to get Amelia Kerr out. She flicks the ball towards mid-wicket. The fielder throws the ball to Kumari who misses the stumps from a metre away!

New Zealand should get at least 165 from here. They have the power hitting in their batting line-up.

  4. NZ 116-1published at 15 overs

    Bates 40, Kerr 42

Another great boundary from Amelia Kerr! Oshadi Ranasinghe bowls back of a length and Kerr comes down the wicket and smacks it through the covers for four.

Another ball is hit down to mid-on for another four by Kerr.

Both Suzie Bates and Kerr are closing in on a half-century.

  5. NZ 104-1published at 14 overs

That drop catch could be costly. Inoka Ranaweera's over goes for nine runs. It's a single to bring up New Zealand's 100.

    Oh what a horror.

    Nilakshi de Silva. Ouch.

  7. dropped catch

Suzie Bates dropped on 37published at 13.1 overs

    Oh no!

Suzie Bates hits Inoka Ranaweera high in the air towards mid-on.

Nilakshi de Silva steadies herself underneath, gets her hands ready but it hits her chin and goes through her arms. Unlucky.

  8. NZ 95-1published at 13 overs

A full toss from skipper Chamari Athapaththu is driven by Amelia Kerr past extra cover and mid-off for for four.

The next ball is short from Athapaththu and Kerr goes deep in her crease and hit it towards square for the second boundary of the over.

    Lovely shots!

I wonder if New Zealand have abandoned trying to get a massive total now and are being careful to make sure they just post a good one.

  10. NZ 85-1published at 12 overs

Suzie Bates moves around her crease and flicks Malsha Shehani's delivery towards deep backward square for four.

    Eight runs off the over.

Chamari Athapaththu is getting bounce and turn from the wicket. There's only two singles to end the over.

Not the worst review we have seen - but also not a good one.

  13. Not outpublished at 10.1 overs

Ball tracking shows it's pitched outside off, the impact is in line but the ball would miss the stumps. Sri Lanka lose the review.

  14. Sri Lanka reviewpublished at 10.1 overs

It's Sri Lanka's skipper Chamari Athapaththu to bowl after the drinks break.

The ball strikes Amelia Kerr on the pads and Sri Lanka want another look.

Sri Lanka have let some chances go while Suzie Bates has batted brilliantly against spin. I think New Zealand should be looking at 170 or 180 here. I think a lot will rest on the shoulders of Chamari Athapaththu with the bat. I did wonder if she would come into the bowling equation soon.

New Zealand are ticking along well and have only lost one wicket so far:

  17. drinks break

    Drinks breakpublished at 10 overs

    NZ 75-1

Left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera concedes five singles in this over. There's a fumble in the field and New Zealand's Suzie Bates and Amelia Kerr think of taking a couple but decide not to. Wise decision.

    Time for a drinks break.

Suzie Bates is a different player than we saw in the first couple of games. She's talked about changing her grip to a slightly looser one, so I wonder if that's playing a part in that. She's placing and timing the ball so well. When you see her moving her feet well you know she's feeling confident.

  19. NZ 70-1published at 9 overs

Kavisha Dilhari's first two balls are hit to the boundary. Suzie Bates targets deep square leg first and then short third.

    Four singles conclude the over.

It's a bit chilly here in Paarl now. There's a cool breeze which is helping the players so it's quite refreshing. It's pleasing the pitch is nowhere near as stodgy as the pitch appeared in the first game between West Indies and Pakistan. I think 150 would be a par score for New Zealand and Sri Lanka might struggle to chase that.
