    Hampshire 100-3 v Nottinghamshire 185

    Fletcha Middleton steers one out into the deep to bring up his first Championship half-century on debut.

    It has come off 88 balls and with senior players falling at the other end.

    Mohammad Abbas' six wickets were welcome, but Hampshire know what they are getting from Abbas.

    They have had a problem at the top of the order with the bat and this effort from Middleton will please them enormously.

    Wayne Madsen is frustrated as he is out just 13 short of a century.

    Matthew Waite picks up his second wicket of the day.

    He also has two maidens to his name. Two of only six bowled at Derby today.

    Sean Abbott gets his first four of the innings as the number nine sends a Colin de Grandhomme ball through the covers.

    This partnership with Cameron Steel is already worth 34 as Surrey dominate the final session.

    Olly Stone strays slightly too straight and a gorgeous piece of timing from Fletcha Middleton sends it to the midwicket boundary.

    Stone hits back with one that hits Middleton on the pads. But Middleton responds with another four as the lead is reduced to under 100.

    Excellent opening day for Essex having been sent in this morning.

    They made a bright start but lost both openers in consecutive balls.

    But a stand of 129 between Dan Lawrence, unbeaten on 74 at the close, and Tom Westley, who made 48, made great progress and they’ll come back tomorrow in good health.

    Marcus Harris has gone for 59 and Glamorgan are close to firing out the Glosters at Cardiff.

    16 overs still scheduled if the light holds.

    Yorkshire 201-2 v Leicestershire

    Plsay is back underway after a three-hour break at Headingley.

    Dawid Malan resumes with his eighth boundary.

    He is on 60, having already added nine since the resumption.

    Fin Bean gets his score moving again to get to 85.

    Yorkshire go past 200 - but that's not now worth what ti was.

    Fropm this season onwards, it takes 250 to get a first batting bonus point.

  8. Lancashire v Surrey 290-7

    We have some lovely, soft, April sunshine at Old Trafford although it is still cool.

    Matt Parkinson produces a great effort to deny Cameron Steel two runs from an excellent looking shot through the covers.

    But Steel pulls one expertly to the boundary at deep square as he moves into the seventies.

    Only 11 overs to go and it looks like we may get the full 96 today.

    Kent v Northants 89-7

    A delayed start and just 26 overs possible in the day at the St Lawrence Ground but Kent have made the most of what play has been possible.

    They won the toss and chipped away regularly with the wickets shared among the four seamers.

    Ricardo Vasconcelos’s 39 the only double-figure score in a miserable start to the season for Northants.

  10. Don't expect a draw with Hants

    Hampshire 68-3 v Nottinghamshire

    Hampshire were only involved in one drawn match last summer - the fewest of all 18 counties.

    With 13 wickets having fallen already in this one, the match is moving on at a pace.

    If the weather holds up over the next three days, we are surely destined for a win either way in this game.

    Looking around the country, we’ve been lucky to have played a full day so far. Still a lot of it left though - and the floodlights are now on.

    Notts' bowlers kept James Vince quiet until he was removed by that beauty from Lyndon James.

    Fletcha Middleton, son of former Hants batter Tony, has looked the part so far in his first County Championship game.

    Hants wanted to shake up the opening partnership for this season feeling they should be stronger in that department.

    It’s early days but the signs are good for the 21 year old.

    James Vince is removed by a beauty from an unexpected source - Lyndon James.

    The ball moves back in and does just enough to beat Vince's defences and hit the top of off-stump.

    From 213-1, Sussex have taken 3-19 to peg Durham back after that flying start.

    And they have the key wicket as Michael Jones is dismissed for 87.

    Derbyshire skipper Leus Du Plooy is out for 16 in his first game for the Peakites as county captain.

    Ben Gibbon finds an edge to have him caught behind,

    New man in on his Derbyshire debut is Matt Lamb, following his winter move from Edgbaston.

    We have had three overs of liquorice allsorts from Luke Wells and his leg-breaks, and Red Rose captain Keaton Jennings has no hesitation in getting a new ball and throwing it straight to Tom Bailey.

    Lancashire need some wickets.

    James Vince, together with young opener Fletcha Middleton, has taken Hampshire to 50 as they fend off this Notts attack.

    Dane Paterson thinks he has Vince caught behind, along with all the slips.

    Unfortunately for the South Africa bowler, he cannot convince the person who counts most - the umpire!

    New man Jordan Clark gets a four and a single and that is enough to bring up the 250 and a first batting point for Surrey.

    It has taken 76 overs. In theory, there are another 34 runs in which they could pick up four more batting points.

    To do that, they would need to score at close to six an over.
