SURREY ALL OUT FOR 442published at 12:12 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Lancashire v Surrey 442

Dan Worrall was not going to hang about as he dances down the wicket to Matt Parkinson and is stumped to be the leggie's first wicket of the summer.

Worrall goes for 18 off eight balls and races back to the changing room to get ready for some bowling.

But this was all about Cameron Steel. He walks off on 141 not out off 182 balls, a magnificent effort after coming in at number seven with the score 164-5.

Lancashire have a lot of good batting to do.

Postpublished at 12:11 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Lancashire v Surrey 442-9

The shackles are completely off now for Cameron Steel as he launches Matt Parkinson for two sixes in three balls.

He's up to 141 not out now.

This is definitely a lesson in captaincy for new Lancashire skipper Keaton Jennings, as he tries to find a way to end this innings.

  4. Turnaround in fortunes in Cardiffpublished at 12:10 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Glamorgan 46-3 v Gloucestershire 165

    Nick Webb
    BBC Radio Wales

Gloucestershire’s bowlers have turned the pressure back on Glamorgan as they claimed three wickets in the first hour, with Zafar Gohar, Tom Price and Marchant de Lange all asking questions of the early batters.

Spinner Zafar surprisingly opened the bowling and got some sharp turn, with night watchman Timm van der Gugten holing out to mid-off as he tried to hit out.

Price, who’d beaten Eddie Byrom on numerous occasions, then bowled David Lloyd for nine while de Lange celebrated his first Shire wicket by rattling one through Sam Northeast’s defences, also for nine.

The hover cover has been fixed after a dual engine failure cost playing time on day one, but should not be needed much with the weather set fair over Easter.

As a lifelong Lancashire supporter, I'm hoping for better than three runner-up finishes this year. But of course we'll have to do it largely without Anderson, Buttler, Livingstone, Salt, Mahmood, Parkinson, etc, etc...

    Lancashire v Surrey 425-9

Last man Dan Worrall gets in on the act as he clubs 14 runs off his first four balls with two fours and a maximum.

The unfortunate Luke Wood now has an unwanted 108 runs against his name off 22 overs.

  7. Miserly from Nottspublished at 12:04 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Hampshire 140-5 v Nottinghamshire 185

As well as the two wickets, Nottinghamshire have tightened the screw in the first hour of play.

Hampshire have managed just 21 runs off 15 overs and the game feels in the balance.

If anything, it has the typical feel of an Ageas Bowl game.

  8. wicket

    WICKET - Hope c Mulder b Ackermann 13published at 12:03 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Yorkshire 388-5 v Leicestershire

The next one to go in Leeds is Shai Hope after a quickfire 13 off 14 balls, to earn Wiaan Mulder a second catch.

George Hill comes in to join nightwatchman Matt Milnes, who has just completed his half-century.

  9. wicket

WICKET - Lawrence lbw b Helm 105published at 12:00 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Middlesex v Essex 199-4

    Big wicket for Middlesex.

Dan Lawrence looks to pull Tom Helm away to the off-side boundary but, for once, gets his timing all wrong and misses the ball completely.

It strikes him on the pads and the delivery was straight, enough for the umpire to raise the finger. Lawrence didn't look hugely impressed, he might have thought height was an issue. But he's gone.

Excellent century, though, that has really put Essex in command at Lord's.

  10. wicket

WICKET Roach c Bell b Wood 18published at 11:59 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Lancashire v Surrey 405-9

Kemar Roach is caught behind but he has done a good job in adding 57 with Cameron Steel and getting him through to his hundred.

A second wicket for Luke Wood, who has been pretty expensive.

  11. Glos fighting back against Glammypublished at 11:58 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Glamorgan 35-2 v Gloucestershire 165

Decent response this morning from Gloucestershire in Division Two.

Bowled out for 165 on Thursday, they have restricted their hosts to 35-2 in the first hour of play today.

Tom Price has bowled Glamorgan skipper David Lloyd for nine, while Timm van der Gugten went for a duck off the bowling of Zafar Gohar.

Oh, hang on, make that 35-3 - Sam Northeast has just been bowled by Marchant de Lange, for the latter's first Gloucestershire wicket. Could be a real tight tussle in store at Sophia Gardens.

  12. Surrey march onpublished at 11:54 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Lancashire v Surrey 400-8

Cameron Steel grabs a single to move to 120 and bring up Surrey's 400.

They have added 60 runs off 13 overs this morning as they move into a commanding position. This ninth wicket partnership between Steel and Kemar Roach is now worth 52.

Last season, they scored 400 or more on eight occasions and they are laying down an early marker in 2023.

  13. wicket

DURHAM ALL OUT FOR 376published at 11:52 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

Sussex v Durham 376 all out

It's a fifth wicket for Nathan McAndrew to end the Durham innings.

McAndrew dismisses Matt Potts to claim 5-85.

That follows rhe Derbyshire innings also coming to an end at home to Worcestershire for 321.

Matthew Waite, on his full debut following last summer's loan move from Yorkshire, has taken four of those wickets.

  14. Postpublished at 11:47 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Lancashire v Surrey 396-8

The leg spin of Matt Parkinson is introduced and Surrey milk him for 11 runs of his first over.

The highlight of which is Kemar Roach drilling him straight down the ground for four.

  15. wicket

    Malan c Mulder b Ahmed 132published at 11:46 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Yorkshire 363-4 v Leicestershire

Rehan Ahmed gets a bit of revenge for his punishment as Dawid Malan goes for one big shot too many and holes out. Wiaan Mulder runs in to take a good catch in the deep.

New man in is West Indies Test batter Shai Hope - best known for the two tons in a match he hit against England on this ground at Headingley in 2017.

Dan Lawrence of Essex celebrates his century against MiddlesexImage source, Rex Features

A lovely leap of joy from Dan Lawrence as he opens his 2023 County Championship campaign with a ton for Essex.

He does so in style too with a nice shot back down the ground to dispatch Ryan Higgins to the boundary, evading the grasp of a diving fielder.

Lawrence's century came just after four hours at the crease, including 11 fours and two sixes, from 197 balls.

It's his 13th first-class ton - definitely not unlucky for some. Well, Middlesex maybe.

Nathan Cole: Think how the schedule is this season, when teams like Surrey lose their England Test players then their white-ball players that play red-ball cricket will be available, so Surrey strong favourites for me plus Tom Latham's arrival in June is smart. Think Lancashire are the team to challenge Surrey as still not convinced by Hampshire's batting line-up.

    Yorkshire 350-3 v Leicestershire

Dawid Malan hits his first six of the season as he puts Colin Ackermann over the ropes.

It has helped the England international reach 123, overtaking Fin Bean's first-day 118 in the process.

That makes Malan not only the top scorer in this match but also in the country. Although it is only Day Two, so let's not get too carried away.

Nightwatchman Matt Milnes then tucks into three successive boundaries in the next over off hapless young England legspinner Rehan Ahmed to earn a third batting point.

15 off the over. To add to his 20 off his first over yesterday.

65 added so far in 40 minutes. And Ahmed's figures read 5-0-43-0.

  19. 'Contest on an even keel'published at 11:41 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Hampshire 136-5 v Nottinghamshire 185

    Dave Bracegirdle
    BBC Radio Nottingham commentator

Dane Paterson has wasted no time on the second morning at The Ageas Bowl in reminding Nottinghamshire supporters of his potency in swing-friendly conditions.

The former South Africa international went without reward on the opening day but has nipped out both Liam Dawson and Fletcha Middleton already to tilt the contest back towards an even keel.

Over 50 wickets in each of his first two seasons at Trent Bridge, Paterson nipped a couple away before shaping a ball back into Dawson’s pads and then had Middleton caught behind by one that jagged away.

  20. wicket

NORTHANTS ALL OUT FOR 117published at 11:32 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Kent v Northants 117

Matthew Quinn will be on a hat-trick when he bowls his first delivery in Northants' second innings.

The Kent paceman takes wickets with successive deliveries as last man Jack White plays at a shot he should have left and Sam Billings takes the catch behind the stumps.

That's 4-25 for Quinn and Kent are in control at Canterbury.

Ricardo Vasconcelos (39) and the stranded Gareth Berg (21no) the top scorers in an otherwise very ordinary batting effort from the visitors.
