  1. wicket

WICKET Middleton c Moores b Paterson 59published at 11:30 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Hampshire 133-5 v Nottinghamshire 185

    Dane Paterson strikes again!

It's the end of Fletcha Middleton as he is tempted to drive and Tom Moores takes a fine diving catch behind the stumps.

But a very promising knock from the 21-year-old on his Championship debut.

  2. wicket

    WICKET - Tremain c Billings b Quinn 9published at 11:29 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Kent v Northants 117-9

Aussie Chris Tremain's County Championship debut for Northants with the bat ends on nine runs.

He's a bit trapped in his crease and can't move his feet quick enough, feathering a delivery from Matt Quinn to wicketkeeper Sam Billings.

  3. Division Twopublished at 11:28 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Sussex v Durham 370-9

Sussex are looking to wrap up the Durham innings quickly and have taken two of the remaining three wickets with one apiece for Nathan McAndrew and Jack Carson.

The two Matts, Kuhnemann and Potts are at the crease.

  4. Postpublished at 11:24 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Kent v Northants 112-8

Gareth Berg has decided attack is the best form of defence. Can't blame him considering what's gone before.

He's only faced 14 balls yet is already comfortably Northants' second highest scorer of their innings on 21. Indeed he's only the second to reach double figures, alongside opener Ricardo Vasconcelos (39).

Berg just hit fellow 40-something Michael Hogan for three successive boundaries - these are crucial runs for the visitors, keeping alive their hopes of being completely blown away in this one.

    Lancashire v Surrey 366-8

No nervous nineties for Cameron Steel as he again hits Will Williams through the legside to bring up his century with a stylish four.

A great innings - Steel's three figures have come off 152 balls with 11 fours and a six.

Steel raises both arms in delight and his team-mates on the balcony are thrilled for him.

Quiet but steady start for Essex at Lord's.

Dan Lawrence has moved on to 80 and Matt Critchley is on five, as the visitors have edged up to 173-3.

Critchley has just got away with a little edge to slip that fell just short.

Dawid Malan clips one away through point for his 15th boundary - and that is the 29th first-class century of the England man's career.

Two tons so far in 2023 - and both of them made by Yorkshire batters.

Young opener Fin Bean beat him to the honour of being the first yesterday.

  11. Postpublished at 11:11 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Kent v Northants 97-8

We've had that meeting of the veterans that BBC Radio Northants commentator Andrew Radd spoke about a few entries ago.

Michael Hogan, 41, bowled to Gareth Berg, 42 - and it was the older man who won their mini-battle, pulling the Kent man away for four with the final ball of the morning's second over.

    Respect your elders, Michael.

  13. wicket

WICKET Abbott lbw b Bailey 42published at 11:08 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Lancashire v Surrey 348-8

Sean Abbott had added eight to his overnight score with a couple of streaky boundaries down to third off Tom Bailey.

But the bowler has his revenge as he traps Abbott in front for his fourth wicket of the innings.

  14. wicket

WICKET Dawson lbw b Paterson 24published at 11:07 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Hampshire 120-4 v Nottinghamshire 185

Nottinghamshire need wickets this morning and there's the first!

Liam Dawson doesn't really get forward and he is hit on the pads by Dane Paterson. It's a good shout and the finger goes up.

  15. wicket

WICKET - Sales lbw b Quinn 5published at 11:02 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Kent v Northants 89-8

That didn't take long. Second ball of the morning at Canterbury.

James Sales' pads are rapped by a bit of pace and turn from Matthew Quinn who takes his second wicket of the innings and Northants' woes continue.

They face a battle to reach triple figures at this rate.

  16. Battle of the forty-somethings?published at 11:00 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Kent v Northants 89-7

    Andrew Radd
    BBC Radio Northampton

In contrast to yesterday's damp and gloomy conditions, we have bright sunshine at Canterbury this morning.

Northamptonshire need their last three wickets to improve the situation markedly from a shaky 89-7 overnight - amid discussion about what might be a 'par' score. The visitors' head coach John Sadler said last night that 150 would 'put us in the game' but that's clearly a way off.

Both camps were agreed that it had been a good toss to win yesterday - but Kent's seam attack, with Grant Stewart to the fore, made skilful use of helpful conditions.

Stand by this morning for the possibility of 41-year-old Michael Hogan bowling to 42-year-old Gareth Berg. Who says it's exclusively a young players' game?

  17. Steel shows Surrey depthpublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Lancashire v Surrey 340-7

On the way to the 2022 Championship title, Surrey had no fewer than 11 century-makers, underlining their awesome batting line-up.

Cameron Steel was not one of them. His top score was 48 in five matches.

But coming in at number seven yesterday against Lancashire, he played a great hand to reach 86 not out and take his side from 164-5 to 340-7 at the close.

Steel had not reached 50 for his new county in Championship cricket before then, although he did score 224 for previous county Durham back in 2017.

He needs 14 to be Surrey's first centurion of the new season in a crucial innings for the 27-year-old's own career.

James Anderson bowling in the netsImage source, BBC Sport

Old Trafford looks an absolute picture this morning ahead of the Good Friday cricket.

The outfield has been the usual hive of activity this morning with players from both sides going through their warm-ups.

They also include a player with 685 Test wickets, as James Anderson has been going through his routines as well as chatting and passing on a few tips to the other Lancashire bowlers.

Anderson is not playing this week, but he is expected to feature in the match away to Essex next week as he begin his preparations for this summer's Ashes series.

Weather forecastpublished at 10:54 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

Taunton, home of Somerset cricketImage source, Getty Images

The BBC Weather outlook says it's "sunny for all this morning".

It also says "cloudier on the eastern coast later, with light showers for some".

But let's not think about that.

There's only two of our nine games today that are in the east of the country. At Canterbury and Lord's.

So there should be decent prospects - even at Taunton, where the first day was completely washed out by an overnight torrent, coming slap, bang on top of a very wet March.

Although, already there will be another hour or more at least before they get started. It is still wet - and they are due to inspect the wicket at midday.

  20. Division Two recappublished at 10:53 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

Yorkshire opener Fin BeanImage source, Getty Images

Fin Bean was the star of the show in Division Two as he became the first century-maker of the 2023 season.

Bean hit 118, his maiden County Championship ton, as Yorkshire ended on 285-3 against Leicestershire. Dawid Malan has an opportunity to join him this morning as he resumes on 91 not out.

No team embraced the Bazball revolution more than Durham on day one as they raced to 352-7 from just 70 overs, rattling along at just over five runs per over against Sussex.

Openers Alex Lees and Michael Jones both made half-centuries, but the home side kept chipping away with wickets to stay in the game.

Derbyshire could not match Durham's rate of scoring but they reached 300-8 off 67 overs at home to Worcestershire.

Wayne Madsen made 87 and Billy Godleman 74 while Zak Chappell's unbeaten 40 off 34 balls added plenty of lower order intent.

Gloucestershire found things hard on their return to Division Two as they were skittled for 165 by Glamorgan.

Marcus Harris top scored with 59 as Timm van der Gugten took 5-65 and the South Wales county will resume on 4-0 this morning.
