  1. Slow progress at Tauntonpublished at 12:54 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Somerset 25-1 v Warwickshire

Taunton is clearly out of step with the rest of the country.

    Yesterday they had no play.

    And now today, no Bazball.

12 overs gone - only 25 runs scored. And Cameron Bancroft took 17 balls to get off the mark.

Or does all this simply say more for the quality of the Bears new-ball attack - Oliver Hannon-Dalby (6-2-11-12) and Chris Rushworth (5-2-8-0).

Hasan Ali, on his Bears debut, then came on as first change and went for seven fromn his first over.

  2. Postpublished at 12:49 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Lancashire 19-0 v Surrey 442

Keaton Jennings is now off the mark, but not in convincing fashion.

It's a terrific ball from West Indies quick Kemar Roach that squares him up and the ball flies over the head of Sean Abbott at third slip.

With the 'c' against your name, the value of your wicket goes up immensely.

  3. Postpublished at 12:47 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Lancashire 15-0 v Surrey 442

Luke Wells unfurls a big cover drive off Dan Worrall to grab his third boundary.

At the other end, captain Keaton Jennings is still on nought.

  4. wicket

WICKET - Milnes lbw b Finan 75published at 12:46 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Yorkshire 439-7 v Leicestershire

Any hopes nightwatchman Matt Milnes might have had of becoming Yorkshire's third centurion end 25 runs short.

He has gone for 75, trapped in front by Mike Finan, bringing Dom4 Bess to the wicket to join Matthew Revis (27)

  5. Postpublished at 12:45 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Hampshire 179-5 v Nottinghamshire 185

Ben Brown and Ian Holland are edging Hampshire close to a first-innings lead.

Their sixth-wicket partnership is now worth 56 and the deficit is down to six runs.

  6. wicket

    WICKET - Rossington c Hollman b Roland-Jones 8published at 12:45 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Middlesex v Essex 213-5

Caught on the hop, and caught on the boundary.

Adam Rossington is slightly deceived by a short one from Toby Roland-Jones. He just about adapts in time but can't control the shot as he'd like and loops it up for Luke Hollman to take an easy catch on the ropes at deep square leg.

An important pre-lunch wicket for Middlesex.

Painful viewing at Lord's from an Essex point of view but another wicket would mean Middlesex are into the bowlers. Not sure of the extra bowler instead of batter by Essex. Certainly not Bazball.

    Kevin, Havering

Just 50 runs added by Essex thus far in the morning session, moving on to 212-4...

  8. Postpublished at 12:38 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Kent 23-0 v Northants 117

Northants are showing signs of closing in on a much-needed breakthrough at Canterbury, with Jack White (0-10 off seven overs) bowling well without reward.

Ben Compton and Zak Crawley are needing to employ all their diligence and patience at the crease, and are doing exactly that thus far.

  9. Pujara already at the creasepublished at 12:37 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Sussex 44-2 v Durham 376

India batter and Sussex captain Cheteshwar Pujara has come to the middle earlier than he would have liked.

Ali Orr was run out and Tom Haines caught behind off Ben Raine as Durham make early inroads.

  10. Runs flowing in Leedspublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Yorkshire 435-6 v Leicestershire

The runs continue to come with a flourish at Headingley despite the loss of George Hill cheaply.

The seventh-wicket pair of the two Matthews - Milnes and Revis - have so far plundered a further 42 to lift Yorkshire closer to a fifth batting bonus point. And comfortably inside the 110-over cut-off too.

Still only 87 bowled so far.

    Hampshire 167-5 v Nottinghamshire 185

    Shot!

Two fours in two balls from Ian Holland off Olly Stone, including a glorious straight drive - the shot of the morning.

The Hampshire batters are enjoying the extra pace that Stone is offering after Dane Paterson had given so little away.

  13. Postpublished at 12:32 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Lancashire 0-0 v Surrey 442

Dan Worrall has two LBW appeals against Keaton Jennings in successive balls, the second of which is a huge one with everyone up.

Jennings survives but Lancashire have yet to get a run off the board.

  14. Postpublished at 12:25 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Middlesex v Essex 207-4

Essex have edged past 200 at Lord's but it's slow going.

That would have been enough for a batting point in previous seasons but the bar has been raised to 250 for that this year, remember.

Adam Rossington had hit just three runs from his first 24 balls but then heaves a beauty away for four to more than double his total.

  15. Postpublished at 12:24 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Lancashire 0-0 v Surrey 442

Lancashire openers Luke Wells and Keaton Jennings are at the crease. Kemar Roach has the new ball for Surrey.

Jennings has to switch from captaincy mode into his batting one although Wells is going to take the strike.

    WICKET Dickson c Barnard b Hannon-Dalby 5published at 12:23 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Somerset 13-1 v Warwickshire

    Early breakthrough for Warwickshire.

Oliver Hannon-Dalby, who took 53 County Championship wickets in 2022, gets his first of 2023.

Sean Dickson is gone cheaply, a catch for Ed Barnard on hs Bears debut.

The new man in is Cameron Bancroft, for his Somerset debut.

    Derbyshire 321, Worcestershire 24-0

    Dave Fletcher
    BBC Radio Derby Sport

Zak Chappell looked crestfallen as he fell four short of a half-century on his Derbyshire debut.

He guided an upper cut straight into the hands of Joe Leach at third man and, with Sam Conners going for 10, the home side were 321 all out.

They had been aiming for 350 according to Billy Godleman, who spoke at the close of day one. But, if their bowlers put it in the right area, there is still plenty in the pitch for them

As a Kent fan, two trophies in two seasons means I'm optimistic of more success this season. But without Stevens, Podmore, Ollie Robinson and Milnes means a lighter on-paper bowling attack. If we can start the season strongly, we could do very well in the County Championship.

They've started strongly so far, George - a chanceless reply of 18-0 thus far after skittling Northants for 117

  19. McAndrew takes five on Durham debutpublished at 12:15 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Durham 376 v Sussex

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

Durham have continued where they left off last night, playing attacking cricket.

They clearly wanted to push the game along but that was to the benefit of Australian fast bowler Nathan McAndrew, who took a wicket with the second delivery of the day.

Ben Raine tried to drive him to the boundary, but ended up clipping him to the slips on 10.

Matthew Potts also fell to McAndrew, as he finished with 5-76 on his debut. Durham were dismissed for 376, losing their final three wickets for 24 runs.

Brydon Carse was dismissed for 14, but he was caught on the boundary by Alistair Orr off the bowling of Jack Carson. The Irish spinner finished with 2-57.

It's a sunny day. As we make up for lost time yesterday 104 overs have been scheduled today. It will be another late finish.

They're playing at Tauntonpublished at 12:13 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Somerset 6-0 Warwickshire

A day - and an extra hour - late, they are now finally underway at Taunton.

No wickets yet for a Warwickshire side who start the season without the injured Liam Norwell, who has a back twinge.

Chris Rushworth makes his Bears debut.

Somerset untroubled on 6-0 after two overs.

Bears cricket guru Brian Halford is a welcome part of the commentary team, alongside Anthony Gibson, who is already chuntering about LBW decisions. This one from last season!
