  1. Postpublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    Warwickshire 229-2 v Kent

Jack Leaning with a hint of a glimmer of a chance of a caught-and-bowled chance as Rob Yates pops one back down the track to him.

I'm not sure it reached but Leaning gave it 100% commitment nonetheless, diving to try and claim it.

  2. Postpublished at 16:31 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    Surrey v Hampshire 179-6

There has been a brief delay after tea following the sharp shower at The Oval, the covers are however off, the umpires are back in the middle and the players are trooping after them.

We'll be back under way imminently.

  3. Postpublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    Warwickshire 219-2 v Kent

Rob Yates and Sam Hain have put on an unbroken 150 for the third wicket, which draws a ripple of applause around Edgbaston from a crowd who need little encouragement to clap their chilly hands together.

Don't be fooled by the bright sunshine, look at the array of handmuffs on show in the field so far today!

  4. 'Cook must be in England selectors' thoughts'published at 16:19 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

Essex v Lancashire 207 all out - day one, tea

    Glenn Speller
    BBC Essex sport

Essex will be pleased with this effort after losing the toss.

Their seam attack ticked along nicely again after a dominant performance at Lord’s last week.

With England’s premier seamer, James Anderson watching-on, Sam Cook again showed why he must be in England selectors’ thoughts with a masterful display to take 5-42.

George Bell played a good hand for Lancashire in striking a maiden first-class half century but when he was involved in the run out of Tom Bailey, the visitors quickly subsided and the crowd are now eagerly awaiting A.N Cook v J.M Anderson

  5. Postpublished at 16:19 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    Warwickshire 213-2 v Kent

Hain picks up the pace, taking 13 from that last Jack Leaning over. A spot of white-ball practice with a couple of boundaries too.

There are still 35-plus overs left today, the pitch looks good, these two are well set. You fear for Kent here.

  6. Five wickets for Sam Cookpublished at 16:18 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    Essex v Lancs 207

That final Lancashire wicket also means that Sam Cook has his fifth wicket of the innings - his 12th five-fer in first class cricket.

  7. LANCASHIRE ALL OUT FOR 207published at 16:17 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    Williams lbw b Cook 11 (Essex v Lancs 207)

Sam Cook fires in a leg-stump yorker, and Will Williams can't get his bat down in time.

The umpire's finger is raised, and the players will now head off for tea.

James Anderson will have a Dukes ball in his hand for the first time this summer very shortly...

  8. 50 runs

for Hainpublished at 16:15 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    Warwickshire 195-2 v Kent

Sam Hain played a fine supporting role as Rob Yates sought out his milestone and now he brings up a half-century of his own with a crisp four. He's grown into this knock with a few more expansive shots in recent overs.

These two came together at the end of the 18th over on 69-2. Kent's bowling has tightened up after lunch but they have remained largely untroubled.

Hain made 119 in the best part of seven hours at Taunton last week, he's aiming for a similar feat in this one.

  9. Postpublished at 16:14 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    Warwickshire 195-2 v Kent

Big shout from Joe Denly, down on one knee, as Rob Yates mistimes an attempted sweep. The umpire is unmoved and skipper Sam Billings scrunches up his eyes with his hands on his head. A picture of frustration.

  10. 'Hain working angles like Ray Reardon'published at 16:14 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    Warwickshire 195-2 v Kent

    Mike Taylor
    BBC WM

A light shower sent the players from the field for tea a few overs early, but Kent might have been glad of the premature break.

Not that they bowled badly in the second session; on the whole they were accurate, and bowled a more reliable line than in the first.

But – especially considering they inserted Warwickshire, and it is still mid-April – they will have been disappointed to have had scarcely a hint of a chance in the 29 overs this afternoon.

They certainly have not broken the stride of Rob Yates, who advanced to a confident hundred just after three o’clock.

The left-handed opener made his breakthrough in 2021 as a patient accumulator of runs, before a trough in form last season.

Perhaps this innings will mark the start of a new approach. Before lunch Kent tested him out with the short ball, and Yates pulled reliably to the square leg boundary. When they changed tack, Yates took stock for a while, and then began to stroke the ball productively through the covers.

It was appropriate, though, that he raised three figures with a crunching pull off Daniel Bell-Drummond, his 17th four to go with a six off Michael Hogan.

Sam Hain compiled a six-hour century at Taunton last week and has been similarly unhurried here so far, despite being challenged by a variety of funky field arrangements. Sam Billings moved everyone but the slips to the legside, and then had to watch Hain work the angles like Ray Reardon.

  11. Tea at Trent Bridgepublished at 16:14 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    Notts 186-6 v Somerset

Haseeb Hameed and Ben Duckett smoothly guided the hosts past the hundred mark before lunch, but things have gone south for Nottinghamshire in the time since.

Both openers fell having made half-centuries, before Lewis Gregory removed Ben Slater and Lyndon James in successive deliveries to wrestle the initiative back for Somerset.

Six wickets fell in that session for 84 runs.

  12. 'Wicket isn't providing as much help'published at 16:12 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

Surrey v Hampshire 179-6 - day one, tea

    Kevan James
    BBC Radio Solent commentator

Hampshire are making slow but steady progress since being 98-5 at lunch.

Leading the way is Ben Brown. Surrey dropped him when on three to a top edge pull that went to deep backward square leg.

Keith Barker is giving him good support.

Yes the wicket isn’t providing as much help to the seam bowlers as it was this morning but there is still movement.

  13. Tea at Northamptonpublished at 16:10 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    Northants 21-1 v Middlesex 149

There have been 41 balls without a run at Northampton, as Hassan Azad and Sam Whiteman block their way to tea.

Let's hope they pick things up a touch after the interval...

  14. Postpublished at 16:08 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    Warwickshire 194-2 v Kent

Joe Denly was three balls into his first over of spin when the rain arrived.

He finishes his over and the Yates/Hain partnership reaches 125.

Jack Leaning is going to take the ball at the other end. Double spin from Kent.

Another Nottinghamshire wicket falls - they are collapsing in a heap here.

  16. rain stops play

Rain stops playpublished at 16:06 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    Surrey v Hampshire 179-6

The players head off as a sharp shower hits South London.

Tea will be taken now too. Keith Barker has earned a sit down and a warm beverage in a comfy chair. Ben Brown is still there, unbeaten on 82. His scoring has slowed but his importance has grown apace.

  17. Postpublished at 15:59 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    Surrey v Hampshire 168-6

Poor old Keith Barker has been peppered with short stuff all afternoon, he tries to duck under the latest riser from Daniel Worrall but it looks to come off his helmet before glancing away to the ropes.

We'll have a break here as Barker gets a drink and a visit from a medic to assess him.

    All OK. On we play....

  18. The Burnley Larapublished at 15:56 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    Essex v Lancs 193-9

    Jimmy Anderson reverse sweep klaxon!

England's finest ever bowler loves a reverse sweep against the spinners, and I for one love him doing it.

He doesn't bother running as it bounces away for four.

  19. Division Two latestpublished at 15:55 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

Leicestershire's batters are full of confidence after chasing 389 to beat Yorkshire in round one.

They've quickly moved to 102-2 against Derbyshire at Grace Road although Sol Budinger has just been removed by Sam Conners for a rapid 72.

At Chester-le-Street it's tea where Durham have reached 207-4 against Worcestershire. David Bedingham is 62 not out.

  20. wicket

WICKETpublished at 15:54 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    Bell c A Cook b S Cook 60 (Essex v Lancs 188-9)

A fine knock comes to an end, as George Bell fends a back-of-a-length delivery from Sam Cook to his namesake Sir Alastair at first slip.

James Anderson strides to the middle, and gets off the mark from his first ball.
