  1. IPL hundred for Harry Brookpublished at 16:42 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

England and Yorkshire batter Harry Brook has just scored a century off 55 balls for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League.

Making quite a name for himself all over the globe is the 24-year-old. Exciting times for English cricket.

    Surrey 129-3 v Hampshire 254

The umpires are strolling out to the square in conversation with the ground staff. The light meter is being checked and the sky is being squinted at.

I'll be honest I am not sure we are going to see any imminent return to action in South London, but at least the players and umpires haven't got changed into loungewear just yet.

  3. Pitch inspection at CLSpublished at 16:28 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Durham 425-9d v Worcestershire 96-2

Now then. The skies have been looking more silver than grey and the ground staff have been on to have a peek beneath the covers. I am sure I saw a roller at one point too.

There is apparently to be an inspection at 17:00 BST but given the covers are back in place, the staff have disappeared and the skies remain threatening, I'm not too sure how that one might go, if it goes at all.

  4. 'It's like watching art in front of you'published at 16:25 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Essex 219 v Lancashire 207 & 35-1 - tea, day two

    George BellImage source, Rex Features

A lot has happened since Thursday night but we really should revist some lovely quotes from Lancashire's 20-year-old wicketkeeper George Bell, who kept to Jimmy Anderson for the first time at Chelmsford yesterday.

"I was definitely more nervous about keeping to Jimmy than batting,” Bell told BBC Radio Lancashire, who ended up as his side's leading scorer with 60 of their 207 first innings total.

"I’ve not kept to him in a game before. I’d heard stories about him calling out keepers who drop catches off him so I was like, ‘Make sure you catch the ball, Bell!’

“Keeping to Jimmy is like watching art in front of you. It’s just good to watch. He’s got it on a string. You know exactly where it’s coming.

“At Old Trafford you get it around your knees sometimes but he gets it right through. It’s just world-class bowling. Just good to be a part of.”

  5. Tea at Chelmsfordpublished at 16:22 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Essex 219 v Lancs 207 & 35-1

Keaton Jennings and Josh Bohannon get Lancashire through to tea with a narrow lead.

They'll probably take only being one down.

Bohannon coped a nasty blow in a very painful area and has survived two leaves to balls that jagged back sharply from Sam Cook.

  6. 16:45 BST restart at Wantage Roadpublished at 15:58 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Northants 111-3 v Middx 149

They're going to try and get some cricket at Northampton but they're giving it a good while for the ground to try and dry out further.

Every chance more rain could find its way to the ground by then given the forecast.

    28 overs are scheduled.

  7. Play abandoned at Trent Bridgepublished at 15:55 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Notts 256 v Somerset 28-2

Play didn't look possible at Trent Bridge and now day two has officially been abandoned.

That's four games called off without a ball bowled today.

  8. Bad light stops playpublished at 15:55 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Surrey 129-3 v Hampshire 254

A smattering of boos ring around the sparse crowd in the cavernous ground.

We are off for bad light after 12 deliveries. Player safety and all that.

  9. Postpublished at 15:54 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Surrey 129-3 v Hampshire 254

Mohammad Abbas is in the mood today. Swinging the ball onto the seam and beating Jordan Clark with a corker as he tries to defend. Nothing you can do with that. Good cricketers are too good sometimes.

This is a great spell, especially given the stop-start nature of the day. Clark tries to answer back by striding down the track to attack the next ball and then leaves the final ball of the set to drift perilously close to the top of off stump.

  10. wicket

WICKETpublished at 15:47 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Wells lbw b Porter 5 (Essex 219 v Lancs 207 & 12-1)

Luke Wells had pulled a boundary to bring the scores level but then falls next ball.

Jamie Porter angles one in from round the wicket, Wells gets his angles wrong and is playing down the wrong line and looks dead lbw.

  11. Back under way at The Ovalpublished at 15:45 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Surrey 127-3 v Hampshire 254

There has been a slight delay to proceedings after tea at The Oval.

The covers are off and the groundstaff have been working in the middle, but here come Ollie Pope and Jordan Clark. We should be back underway just about five minutes behind schedule.

You'll take what you can get on a day like today.

  12. 'Hants bowlers more threatening'published at 15:36 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Surrey 127-3 v Hampshire 254

    Kevan James
    BBC Radio Solent commentator

Hampshire's seam bowlers have looked a lot more threatening this afternoon.

For 14 overs last night and in the 24 minutes of play this morning they didn’t get anywhere near as much movement as the Surrey bowlers did yesterday.

It’s been a different story this afternoon. Yes the skies are leaden and the light not the best. But Mo Abbas (2-27) today was a handful and the catch taken by James Vince at slip off James Fuller to get rid of Ryan Patel was breathtaking.

  13. Back out at Chelmsfordpublished at 15:34 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Essex 219 v Lancs 207 & 3-0

Not too big a delay at Chelmsford and they're back out with 46 overs scheduled.

While we have no play at any of our grounds, take some time to enjoy this rather magnificent dog watching on at Chester-le-Street earlier.

  15. Tea at The Ovalpublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Surrey 127-3 v Hampshire 254

Common sense in abundance today. An early tea was called pretty much as soon as the players scattered from the field, and, so long as there are no downpours, we are scheduled to be back underway at 15:40 BST.

  16. Close of play at Edgbastonpublished at 15:19 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Warwickshire 367-3 v Kent

Not a massive surprise but we won't see play in Birmingham today. The pitch inspection a little earlier looked pretty squelchy.

After a taxing 96 overs in the dirt on Thursday, Kent won't mind this one bit.

The weekend forecast does look better, so keep your fingers crossed Bears fans.

  17. rain stops play

Rain stops play at The Ovalpublished at 15:16 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Surrey 127-3 v Hampshire 254

The skies have been darkening by the moment and the players race off as the covers come on. Once again this might be a preemptive strike. It might just be a sharp shower.

  18. rain stops play

Rain stops play at Chelmsfordpublished at 15:14 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Essex 219 v Lancs 207 & 3-0

Only eight balls possible of Lancashire's second innings before rain returns to Chelmsford.

  19. Postpublished at 15:14 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Surrey 126-3 v Hampshire 254

Jordan Clark so nearly chops his second ball from Ian Holland onto his own stumps. This game is actually very much in the balance, in a way you'd never have expected with Hampshire reeling on 39-4 yesterday morning.

Ollie Pope is there on 33 and the deficit is down to 127.

  20. Raining again at Northamptonpublished at 15:14 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Northants 111-3 v Middx 149

The 14:30 BST inspection at Wantage Road came to naught and they're waiting again for rain to clear.
