  1. wicket

WICKETpublished at 15:10 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Patel c Vince b Fuller 20 (Surrey 124-3 v Hampshire 254)

Ryan Patel flashes at one from James Fuller and offers James Vince the chance of a fine tumbling catch to his right at first slip.

Fuller's over began with a couple of loose deliveries but has ended with a scalp.

Jordan Clark comes in at five... seemingly promoted above Jamie Smith, presumably due to the threat of weather.

  2. Raining at Trent Bridgepublished at 15:02 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Notts 256 v Somerset 28-2

The planned 14:30 BST inspection at Trent Bridge was curtailed after rain returned.

The official line is now no play before tea but the forecast is dreadful for the rest of the day.

  3. Postpublished at 15:01 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Durham 425-9d v Worcestershire 96-2

I don't want to dampen anyone's mood, no pun intended, but the big covers are coming on at Chester-le-Steet and the floodlights have been switched off.

Some of the pictures I've seen of clouds in the vicinity would look more at home in Mordor too. Not great news.

  4. wicket

ESSEX ALL OUTpublished at 14:58 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Critchley c de Grandhomme b Williams 78 (Essex 219 v Lancs 207)

With only Jamie Porter for company, Matt Critchley charges at Will Williams and drives to deep cover, ending a fine innings.

He's kept Essex going today with no other sizeable contributions.

A lead of only 12 for Essex, so it's basically a one-innings match from here.

  5. Postpublished at 14:57 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Surrey 113-2 v Hampshire 254

Ollie Pope dances down the pitch and attempts an almighty hoik at an Ian Holland delivery, missing complely and spinning back towards his crease with the momentum of his bat.

For such an eye-catching cricketer, that was very uncharacteristic, and not very pretty.

Surrey are 141 behind and, whisper it quietly, the worst of the weather looks like it might have slid underneath the M25 and left South London alone.

  6. wicket

WICKETpublished at 14:55 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    S Cook c Bailey b de Grandhomme 20 (Essex 219-9 v Lancs 207)

That's a nice hand from Sam Cook, making 20 and eating up 53 balls to help his side sneak in front.

    But he's now gone.

It's a tame ending too as taps a catch up to square leg to give Colin de Grandhomme his second wicket.

Lancashire are almost through without much damage.

  7. Postpublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Surrey 103-2 v Hampshire 254

Ryan Patel had scored two from the first 23 balls he faced but his eyes light up as Ian Holland bangs in a loose one and he opens up his arms to send the ball through the covers for four.

A couple of balls later and a thickish edge from Patel flashes through the slips and away to the ropes. Just like the 50, the Surrey 100 is brought up by a streaky edge.

  8. Essex leadpublished at 14:46 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Essex 208-8 v Lancs 207

The home side nudge ahead at Chelmsford.

But not before Sam Cook survives a huge lbw shout from James Anderson. Squared up, Cook was probably saved by doubts over height and leg stump.

If they can squeeze it out to maybe a lead of 30, that could be very handy if the second-innings are also low-scoring.

  9. wicket

WICKETpublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Azhar Ali lbw b Potts 29 (Durham 425-9d v Worcestershire 96-2)

The umpires are discussing whether to follow him back to the pavilion too.

    And they will.

Potts has 2-41 and trapped Azhar Ali in his crease, but now he's suggesting to the umpires as they head off that Durham were allowed to bat on in heavier rain yesterday.

  10. Postpublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Durham 425-9d v Worcestershire 96-1

The rain is falling at the Riverside but the players remain in the middle, for now.

The run-rate continues to dwindle as Matty Potts and Ben Raine in particular see their figures improve.

  11. 200 runs

up for Essexpublished at 14:26 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Essex 201-8 v Lancs 207

Sam Cook glances and then steers James Anderson to the third man fence before a single from Matt Critchley brings Essex's 200 up.

Almost on terms now the home side with a bit of sunshine poking through.

  12. Postpublished at 14:20 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Surrey 82-2 v Hampshire 254

Ollie Pope shoulders arms to Kyle Abbott who gives his lungs another big workout after jagging one in towards off-stump and thumping the pads... I've lost count of the LBW appeals from Hampshire but it's a lot.

This is a key spell for Pope and Ryan Patel to negotiate with two world-class bowlers making the most of April weather in England.

  13. wicket

WICKETpublished at 14:14 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Burns c Brown b Abbas 45 (Surrey 81-2 v Hampshire 254)

More fine bowling from Mohammad Abbas. Rory Burns has to play at that one on fourth stump but a hint of movement takes it to the outside edge and offers up a routine chance for Ben Brown.

Ryan Patel is in at four. He scored three and nought at Old Trafford last week and now comes into this. Wily old Abbas steaming in with the lights on and clouds overhead. Not easy this first-class malarkey.

  14. Postpublished at 14:12 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Surrey 79-1 v Hampshire 254

Kyle Abbott has just completed his first over of the afternoon and Ollie Pope's heart must be racing.

A couple of hearty LBW appeals are turned down, height again might be a factor, and Burns strode down the pitch on another occasion too.

Keith Barker's frustration has been passed on to his replacement at the end of his spell.

  15. Resumption at Chelmsfordpublished at 14:11 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Essex 184-8 v Lancs 207

A little longer lunch than planned but it's cleared up at Chelmsford.

A rather ambitious 67 overs are still scheduled but this game is just about even.

  16. Postpublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Durham 425-9d v Worcestershire 74-1

Worcestershire scored 67 runs from the first 10 overs of their reply. They have scored seven more from the next seven.

Azhar Ali has 20. Jake Libby has crept to six from 32 balls.

  17. Postpublished at 13:59 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Surrey 73-1 v Hampshire 254

Another big yell from Mohammad Abbas as the ball thuds into the pads of an off-balance Rory Burns. Not sure it was in line and Burns was well outside his crease too.

Some good pressure being applied Abbas and Keith Barker.. ah... until Barker sends one down the leg side for Pope to dispatch to the fence with relish. That'll make him feel better, and Barker worse.

  18. 14:30 BST inspectionspublished at 13:58 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

Two inspections planned for 14:30 BST - at Trent Bridge and Wantage Road.

Fingers crossed the rain hasn't left its mark on the grounds.

  19. Postpublished at 13:54 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

    Surrey 67-1 v Hampshire 254

Ollie Pope thought he had gone. The England man flashes at one across the line from Keith Barker but can only nick it into the two-foot gap between James Vince and Liam Dawson in the slips. They stare at each other and then down to the rope where the ball ends up.

Barker is probably wondering if he walked over three drains on his way into the ground this morning, such is his luck since lunch.

  20. rain stops play

Play abandoned at Leicestershirepublished at 13:47 British Summer Time 14 April 2023

Leicestershire 243-2 v Derbyshire - no play Friday, rain

With rain still falling and the outfield saturated at Grace Road the umpires have called things off without a ball being bowled on day two.

They'll try again tomorrow when the prospects are much brighter.
