    Thank you and Goodnight.

  2. Next week’s Coronation weekend fixturespublished at 18:37 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

    4-7 May

There really are some intriguing fixtures to mark the Coronation weekend.

Based on their early season form, leaders Surrey once again look like they are going to be the kings this season.

But, having beaten 2021 winners Warwickshire, the champions now face an away trip to Chelmsford to face the red ball kings of 2019 and 2020, Essex - complete with their spin king Simon Harmer.

Second-placed Hampshire meet the Bears in the Keith Barker Derby, winless bottom two Somerset and Northants meet at Taunton and Lancashire, yet to give anyone a tonking after three straight draws, head to Nottingham.

All that and Steve Smith making his Sussex debut against Worcestershire back at New Road, where he first started in English cricket.

    Division One

    Chelmsford: Essex v Surrey

    Southampton: Hampshire v Warwickshire

    Trent Bridge: Nottinghamshire v Lancashire

    Taunton: Somerset v Northamptonshire

    Division Two

    Derby: Derbyshire v Leicestershire

    New Road: Worcestershire v Sussex

    Headingley: Yorkshire v Glamorgan

  3. MATCH DRAWNpublished at 18:27 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

    Sussex 455-5 dec (13 pts), Gloucestershire 248 & 121-4 (6 pts)

    Hands are shaken!

Sussex skipper Cheteshwar Pujara offers his mitt - and Graeme van Buuren gleefully accepts it as, with great irony after such a weather-hit week, the game ends in sunshine.

So that is that for this week.

Three ‘results yesterday. Two draws today.

    But what about next week?

  4. Four overs to go . . .published at 18:27 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

    Sussex 455-5 dec, Gloucestershire 248 & 121-4 (28 overs)

Not long now after a James Coles maiden.

    But hang on . . .

  5. Five overs to go . . .published at 18:24 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

    Sussex 455-5 dec, Gloucestershire 248 & 121-4 (27 overs)

Boundary number 11 for Graeme van Buuren.

Not that it is runs that matter. Just crease occupation.

  6. Six overs to go . . .published at 18:20 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

    Sussex 455-5 dec, Gloucestershire 248 & 114-4 (26 overs)

Another Fynn Hudson-Prentice over is seen off.

Almost there for Gloucestershire. As fhe great Andy Williams would have said. Or sang, rather.

  7. Seven overs to go . . .published at 18:15 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

    Sussex 455-5 dec, Gloucestershire 248 & 112-4 (25 overs)

An edge through the slips for Ollie Price causes slight alarm but it is another over ticked off.

  8. 100 runs

Eight overs to go . . .published at 18:11 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

    Sussex 455-5 dec, Gloucestershire 248 & 108-4 (24 overs)

The Gloucestershire 100 comes up as the hosts almost start to enjoy themselves. And that is followed in the same over by home skipper Graeme van Buuren‘s fifty.

  9. Nine overs to go . . .published at 18:07 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

    Sussex 455-5 dec, Gloucestershire 248 & 96 -4 (23 overs)

Another one bites the dust . . .

Actually it is more damp than dusty out there, but you get the drift . . .

  10. 10 overs left in Bristol . . .published at 18:02 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

    Sussex 455-5 dec, Gloucestershire 248 & 94-4 (22 overs)

Gloucestershire skipper Graeme van Buuren has moved on to 42 - 36 of which have come in boundaries.

It has also brought up his fifty partnership with Ollie Price. A good rescue from 41-4.

  11. No further breakthrough in Bristolpublished at 17:56 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

    Sussex 455-5 dec, Gloucestershire 248 & 82-4 (20 overs)

It is starting to look like job done by Graeme van Buuren and Ollie Price.

They have seen out a further 10 overs - and doubled the score - and Sussex skipper Cheteshwar Pujara has now turned to Henry Crocombe to have a trundle.

The belief is visibly beginning to dim a bit. But, with the floodlights on, there are still 11 overs left after this one.

  12. Wet ball causes more workpublished at 17:40 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

    Sussex 455-5 dec, Gloucestershire 248 & 68-4 (17 overs)

Four boundaries already for Gloucestershire captain Graeme van Buuren.

He is not holding back on his shots, despite having been repeatedly beaten by Nathan McAndrew.

One big advantage of finding the fence so often on a wet day is that it soaks the ball - and it is keeping the Sussex fielders busy with the annoyance of having to towel it dry, so maybe he does know exactly what he’s doing.

Is it dampening the earlier Sussex ardour though?

15 overs left now. Weather permitting.

And is that the sun coming out again?

  13. McAndrew has chance to make impactpublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

Nathan McAndrew is in his second stint in English cricket after a short stay with Warwickshire in 2022

Sean Hunt has taken three of the four wickets so far and Nathan McAndrew, who had a five-wicket haul in the first innings, so far only has one second time around.

But he will lose his place next week because of the short-term signing of fellow Aussie Steve Smith - so he has the chance to come in all guns blazing and make an impact here in what will be his final game for a month.

With 20 overs left, Gloucestershire still trail Sussex by 158.

Restart in Bristoipublished at 17:08 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

    Sussex 455-5 dec, Gloucestershire 248 & 43-4

The stumps are going in the ground, the saw dust is strewn, the players are coming out again - and we do have a restart, after a lot of consulting.

Sean Hunt completes his over. 22 overs left after this one.

  15. rain stops play

Still off at Nevil Roadpublished at 17:00 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

    Sussex 455-5 dec, Gloucestershire 248 & 43-4

Gloucestershire still trailed Sussex by 164 runs when they were forced off half an hour ago.

At the time, only 10 overs had been bowled of the 44 overs possible. So Sussex have plenty to play with, but what sort of effect will that rain have had on the outfield.

If they stop off much longer, we will soon be approaching the point of no return. There was briefly talk of a five o‘clock restart. But that has already been put back to 5:10 - and The Blotter is working away on the outfield, trying un-dampen things a bit.

  16. LEICESTERSHIRE DRAW WITH GLAMORGANpublished at 16:52 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

    Leicestershire 407 & 252-3 v Glamorgan 465

The players shake hands and that's all the play we will see from Leicester today.

The day belongs to Rishi Patel who earned his best ever first-class score with an unbeaten 134 and he was given great support by captain Lewis Hill (82).

It was their partnership that ensured the match would end in a draw as Glamorgan toiled with the ball.

This morning, Glamorgan lost their final two wickets early with Chris Cooke going for a glorious 132 before being bowled by the pick of Leicestershire's bowlers in Chris Wright, who picked-up 5-89.

Leicester take 11 points from the match, with Glamorgan securing 10.

  17. 6 runs

for Rishi Patelpublished at 16:44 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

    Leicestershire 407 & 251-3 v Glamorgan 465 (Leicestershire lead by 193 runs)

Rishi Patel sees his opportunity and takes it!

Glamorgan send on Eddie Byrom for a bowl and the batter promptly despatches the first ball of the over into the stands to reach his career-high score with a six!

What a way to do it - well done!

  18. dropped catch

Dropped catchpublished at 16:33 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

    Leicestershire 407 & 239-3 v Glamorgan 465 (Leicestershire lead by 181 runs)

A big let off for Rishi Patel as Andrew Salter finds the edge but wicket keeper Chris Cooke can't collect it cleanly and it falls to the turf.

    Salter is gutted.

His figures are 0-61 from 17 overs.

Patel survives and is still on for his career high score.

  19. wicket

WICKET Ackermann c Neser b Lloyd 12published at 16:25 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

    Leicestershire 407 & 231-3 v Glamorgan 465 (Leicestershire lead by 173 runs)

Another one for Glamorgan and it's the skipper leading by example again with his second wicket!

Michael Neser takes the catch at deep square leg as Ackermann flicks away David Lloyd's delivery.

Rishi Patel is now on 122 and Peter Handscomb, who got 95 in the first innings, is in with him now.

  20. rain stops play

Rain stops play in Bristolpublished at 16:22 British Summer Time 30 April 2023

    Sussex 455-5 dec, Gloucestershire 248 & 43-4 (9.4 overs)

The rain has saved them. For now. New man in Ollie Price only got to face one ball. A no-ball, And then a short sharp shower forced the players off.

But it stopped almost before they have left the field.

The umpires then loitered. But it has now began to fall again - and this time they have sought proper sanctuary in the pavilion.

What an escape for the Glorious!
