WICKET Leaning c Jacks b Clark 28published at 13:45 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Surrey v Kent 98-5

Second ball after lunch. One-two punch from Jordan Clark as he alternates his lengths and gets Jack Leaning to push at a shorter, higher one, second ball, glancing a nick to Will Jacks who takes another fine catch, this time diving low to his right at third slip.

Joey Evison heads out to join Jordan Cox. Kent are back under the pump.

Scores of school children arrived during the interval and greeted that action with vociferous shrieks. It's not always quite so lively in the opening over of a Championship session, kids.

Stuart Broad resumes for Notts at Trent Bridge. Just a single for Tom Westley from the first over after lunch. He is now 24 not out.

Surrey have had a decent morning at the Oval, picking up four Kent wickets in the first session of their match.

Ollie Pope is in the Surrey side, but here's what he had to say about being named England's vice-captain for the forthcoming Test against Ireland.

If you need something else to read while we wait for play to resume, take a look at this excellent piece by chief cricket writer Stephan Shemilt on David Gower's memories of the 1989 Ashes series.

What a player he was - Gower that is, not Stephan.

    'That's it, boys. I'm off' - Gower's 'nightmare' Ashes

David Gower recalls a "nightmare" Ashes series which saw him walk out of a press conference, end up on News at 10 and responsible for a hefty wine bill.

Middlesex pace bowler Ethan Bamber has been in action at Lord's this morning, taking 0-18 from seven overs, but because it's Mental Health Awareness Week, we'd like to point you in the direction of an article he has written about coping with anxiety.

A good toss for Cheteshwar Pujara to win on a wicket giving some assistance to the seamers

Ollie Robinson has taken full advantage with four wickets in the session, including the prize scalp of Marnus Labuschange to the first ball he received from the England bowler.

He also accounted for the other Australian, Michael Neser, in a typical spell of line and length bowling

The other Sussex bowlers have all chipped in around Robinson but batting is not straightforward and the Glamorgan seamers may feel they will have an opportunity to bowl the visitors back into the game this afternoon.

  8. Somerset in 'calmer waters' after poor startpublished at 13:25 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Middlesex v Somerset 96-2 - lunch

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Radio Somerset

Here we go again, I thought, as Stevie Eskinazi juggled with and finally clung onto an outside edge from Tom Lammonby to leave Somerset on 10-2 after being put in.

But far from this being the start of yet another Somerset batting collapse, Tom Abell and George Bartlett first steadied the ship and then sailed into calmer waters to leave their side well placed at lunch.

Bartlett was badly missed at slip off Ethan Bamber, but the longer the session went on, the easier batting seemed to become, and this is a good Lord's pitch.

  9. 'Just about' Worcestershire's morningpublished at 13:23 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Worcestershire v Leicestershire 83-4 - lunch

    Dan Wheeler
    BBC Hereford & Worcester

Just about Worcestershire's session. Four wickets would've been the benchmark for Brett D'Oliveira when he stuck Leicestershire in.

When Sol Budinger was merrily slapping six boundaries to the fence and three-tons-already-this-season Rishi Patel looking classy at the other end, the Pears skipper would've been wondering whether that was a good idea after all.

But a Joe Leach peach did for Budinger and when Patel hooked an Adam Finch bumper up into the clouds for Gareth Roderick to pouch, the home side were back in it.

Finch cranked up the heat and cracked the elbow of Foxes captain Lewis Hill and, as the clouds bubbled overhead, it looked a bit of a different game.

Matthew Waite then hooped two into the pads of Hill and Peter Handscombe five balls apart and suddenly Worcestershire were on top and lunching the happier of the two sides.

At this point, we'd just like to quickly mention the work of the South Asian Cricket Academy (SACA), based in the West Midlands.

There's been a lot of debate about the England wicketkeeping position in the past few days. Ben Foakes is in action for Surrey today, having been left out of the squad to face Ireland at Lord's to facilitate Jonny Bairstow's return. Here's what the latter had to say about it.

Tom Westley whips an inswinger from Steven Mullaney away for four as Essex reach lunch in a good position at Trent Bridge.

Stuart Broad won an early lbw decision against Nick Browne, but Alastair Cook and Westley have added 70 since then.

Cook is 46 not out at the interval, with his skipper on 23.

  14. Lunch at New Roadpublished at 13:09 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Worcestershire v Leicestershire 83-4

A maiden from Matthew Waite to Wiaan Mulder ends the morning at New Road, with the home side fighting back to spoil a promising start by Leicestershire.

The visitors were 80-2 but two wickets in an over for Waite - Lewis Hill and Peter Handscomb both lbw - have tilted the balance in favour of Worcestershire.

Loan signing Jack Brooks has bowled six overs so far for the Pears, for figures of 0-11.

  15. Lunch at the Ovalpublished at 13:07 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Surrey v Kent 98-4

    Surrey's morning. Comprehensively.

Zak Crawley and Tawanda Muyeye showed glimpses of their class before departing for 19 and 22 respectively while Ben Compton (4) and Sam Billings (0) didn't linger long enough to show theirs.

Jack Leaning has ridden his luck but remains unbeaten on 28 and Jordan Cox has 12 but Surrey's seam attack have all picked up a wicket and looked threatening throughout the session.

  16. Lunch at Lord'spublished at 13:06 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Middlesex v Somerset 96-2

Somerset batters Tom Abell and George Bartlett do it make through to lunch unscathed.

From 10-2 after early strikes for Toby Roland-Jones and Tim Murtagh and having been asked to bat, this is an excellent recovery.

Abell has 45 and Bartlett 40 and they will eye pushing on this afternoon.

  17. Lunch at Bristolpublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Gloucestershire v Durham 127-2

A productive end to the morning for Durham as Scott Borthwick helps himself to three boundaries in Zafar Gohar's final over and goes into lunch just four runs short of a half-century.

He was dropped in the slips off newcomer Zaman Akhter on 20 and seems in the mood to make Gloucestershire pay for that lapse.

Openers Michael Jones and Alex Lees were the two to go, with a wicket each for Ajeet Singh Dale and Josh Shaw.

  18. Lunch at Southamptonpublished at 13:03 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Hampshire 96-3 v Northamptonshire

Hampshire flew out of the blocks with 22 off the opening two overs but Joe Weatherley (20) and Fletcha Middleton (40) failed to build on encouraging starts and a superb recovery from Northants has dragged them back into this one.

Nick Gubbins (13) fell to Jack White who has tightened up significantly in his second spell.

James Vince and Ben Brown will reconvene in 40 minutes to see if they can steer their side towards batting bonus points.

  19. Lunch at Hovepublished at 13:03 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Sussex v Glamorgan 83-8

Sussex and Ollie Robinson's morning, without a doubt, at Hove.

Four wickets for Robinson, including the prized scalp of Marnus Labuschagne with his first ball at the Australia number three, and eight for Sussex.

This large crowd in at Hove may get to see Australia number four Steve Smith bat at some point this afternoon.

  20. Postpublished at 13:00 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Surrey v Kent 96-4

Jack Leaning and Jordan Cox put on an unbeaten 77 for the fifth wicket to stave off the threat of a collapse and salvage a draw on the final day against Hampshire at Canterbury last week.

Just over 90 hours later they are attempting a similar task at the Oval.

15 added in eight overs doesn't sound much but it's a building block for the visitors.
