WICKET Budinger c Pollock b Leach 30published at 11:37 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Worcs v Leics 37-1

We spoke too soon (see previous entry).

To be fair to Sol Budinger, though, that is a superb delivery by Joe Leach which leaves him off the pitch and is well taken by Ed Pollock at first slip, moving to his right.

  2. Latest from Division Twopublished at 11:36 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

Someone must have given Sol Budinger a couple of cans of energy drink before play began at New Road because the Leicestershire opener is motoring along. He slices Ben Gibbon over point at the start of a new over and is 30 not out from 27 balls in their 36-0.

Much steadier by Durham, who are 23-1 against Gloucestershire, with Alex Lees seven not out from 21 faced and Scott Borthwick on three.

    Sussex v Glamorgan 24-0

Five overs so far from Ollie Robinson, but Eddie Byrom and Zain ul-Hassan are defying him.

Four slips are waiting for any edges, but Robinson has not found one yet.

    0-10 from his opening spell.

  4. wicket

WICKET Weatherley b Buckingham 20published at 11:33 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Hampshire 51-1 v Northamptonshire

The hosts had raced to 50 at the start of the eighth over but Jordan Buckingham produces a superb delivery to make the breakthrough.

He gets one to straighten up as Joe Weatherley comes forward in defence, beats the outside edge and clatters the edge of off-stump.

How Northants needed that. Nick Gubbins joins Fletcha Middleton who is already on 23.

  5. Postpublished at 11:33 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Notts v Essex 26-1

Stuart Broad knows not to bowl there to Alastair Cook, who flicks it away fine off his hip for four.

The man known to the Notts social media team as #LordBroad bowling to a genuine cricketing knight. What a treat.

  6. Postpublished at 11:32 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Surrey v Kent 19-1

Daniel Bell-Drummond scored centuries in both innings in this fixture last June.

He's not in the side this time as Tawanda Muyeye was recalled to the Kent side after an incredible glut of runs in the 2nd XI.

Muyeye shows his class with a beautifully-timed clip through the covers off Clark but Clark beats the edge two balls later.

    Middlesex v Somerset 21-2

With the Test between England and Ireland starting on 1 June, this is the last four-day cricket at Lord's before then.

Presumably with the wicket for that right in the middle of the square, this one is firmly plonked on the edge of it, much closer to the Grand Stand.

It will be a long chase for any fielder for shots heading towards the Tavern or Mound Stands!

    Middlesex v Somerset 21-2

    Shot!

Toby Roland-Jones overpitches and Tom Abell is too good to miss out, handsomely driving it straight to the pavilion for four.

And now George Bartlett gets a boundary with a cracking front-foot drive. That sounded so nice off the bat.

  9. wicket

WICKET Compton b Worrall 4published at 11:25 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Surrey v Kent 12-1

Wow. This has done a LOT.

Dan Worrall gets one to hoop in and clatter into the top of Ben Compton's off-stump as the opener shoulders arms. You can see how he felt comfortable doing so, in his defence. That's moved an awfully long way.

Tawanda Muyeye joins Zak Crawley in the middle and gets off the mark with a single.

    Notts v Essex 20-1

    Glorious stroke.

Brett Hutton finds a little bit of inswing but it's overpitched and Alastair Cook times it sweetly past mid-off for his first boundary of the day.

Essex need runs from him following the loss of Nick Browne and he is nine not out at the end of the sixth over.

    Hampshire 35-0 v Northamptonshire

Fletcha Middleton moves onto 17 by slashing another short and wide delivery from Jack White to the fence. SIx fours in the opening five overs for Hampshire.

Northamptonshire debutant Alex Russell is being kept busy in the field. The 542nd Northants player to feature in a first-class match.

  13. wicket

WICKET Lammonby c Eskinazi b Murtagh 9published at 11:19 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Middlesex v Somerset 10-2

Those wily Middlesex bowlers are doing the business!

Tim Murtaghgets a wicket in exactly the same place as Toby Roland-Jones with Stevie Eskinazi doing the business at first slip.

Murtagh puts the ball on the spot, Tom Lammonby is not sure whether the ball is going to nip in or seam away and the uncertainty leads to the edge.

The new ball, the Lord's slope - it never gets any easier for opening batters!

  14. Postpublished at 11:18 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Hampshire 28-0 v Northamptonshire

Northants have tightened up considerably after that blistering first couple of overs from the hosts.

Jack White and Jordan Buckingham allowed just a single scoring shot each off their second overs and thumped the pads on a couple of occasions too.

  15. wicket

WICKET Browne lbw Broad 11published at 11:17 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Notts v Essex 16-1

    Stuart BroadImage source, Rex

Too much width from Stuart Broad and Nick Browne square cuts for four. Nothing wrong with that one, though, as the Essex opener is trapped in front as he pushes half-forward.

Essex skipper Tom Westley is in at number three and sees out the final two balls of the over.

  16. Latest from Division Twopublished at 11:15 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

Durham lose their first wicket as Michael Jones is bowled offering no shot to a ball from Gloucestershire's Ajeet Singh Dale which is angled in from outside off stump. Jones made 13 and the visitorsd are 15-1.

Sol Budinger clearly likes a bit of width and he twice carves Joe Leach away for four in the same over as Leicestershire move on to 16-0 at New Road.

  17. Good preparation for Robinsonpublished at 11:15 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Sussex v Glamorgan 9-0

With our Ashes hats on, this is a very useful workout for Ollie Robinson at Hove.

Even before he gets a chance to bowl at Marnus Labuschagne, he has a left-handed opening pair to deal with in Eddie Byrom and Zain ul-Hassan.

That should be good preparation for Edgbaston on 16 June where David Warner and Usman Khawaja will be expected to open for Australia.

Robinson has bowled over and round the wicket already to both Glamorgan batters.

  18. Postpublished at 11:14 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Surrey v Kent 8-0

Jordan Clark begins his second over by sending one down Zak Crawley's leg side, a few strangled cries as Ben Foakes dives to his left to claim but although he had a waft there was no bat on that.

Clark does find the edge two balls later but this one squirts past the dive of third slip allowing Crawley to gallop through for two.

  19. Postpublished at 11:11 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Notts v Essex 10-0

Alastair Cook faces former England team-mate Stuart Broad for the first time at the start of the third over.

It's only for one delivery, though, as Cook collects three runs from the first ball and Nick Browne takes the rest.

  20. dropped catch

Dropped catchpublished at 11:10 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Sussex v Glamorgan 4-0

Aristides Karvelas should have a wicket in his first over as he gets Eddie Byrom nicking at one outside off-stump.

It goes low to the left of wicketkeeper Oli Carter but bounces out of his gloves.

    That should have been taken.
