for Joe Clarkepublished at 15:35 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Notts 194-2 v Essex 298

In the words of Mr Punch - 'that's the way to do it'.

Joe Clarke hammers Simon Harmer over long-off for six and reaches his third half-century of the season.

This one has taken him 89 balls and his stand with Matthew Montgomery is now worth 86.

  2. 'Unwanted records pile up for Northants'published at 15:34 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Hampshire 376 v Northamptonshire 56

Northamptonshire continue to pile up unwanted records as their Championship batting woes continue.

Today's 56 all out against Hampshire is the lowest first-class total at the Ageas Bowl, eclipsing the home county's 57 against Kent last season.

It is also their lowest 'away' total in Hampshire - previously 60 at the old Northlands Road ground in 1908.

Dismissed for 63 following on against the Hampshire attack at Wantage Road last month, they then lost to Nottinghamshire inside two-and-a-half days in the previous round of Division One matches - skittled for 72 in their second innings - before this latest batting disaster.

Supporters have been taking to social media to voice their anger and frustration, and certainly for any Northamptonshire follower - or correspondent for that matter - it is not easy to watch at present.

for Fynn Hudson-Prenticepublished at 15:34 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Glamorgan 123 v Sussex 427-7

That's a lively half-century for Fynn Hudson-Prentice - he gets there from 47 balls, pulling James Harris to the midwicket fence.

It's the all-rounder's second of the season and Sussex have now accumulated a lead of more than 300.

  4. Tea at Southamptonpublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Hampshire 376 v Northamptonshire 56

As expected, Hampshire have enforced the follow-on, with a lead of 311, however the light is such that the Northants second innings cannot begin and so an early tea has been taken.

  5. Postpublished at 15:30 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Gloucs 74-1 v Durham 445

Marcus Harris would love a big score before he joins up with Australia's Test squad.

He's going well at the moment and steers the final ball of Ben Raine's latest over down to third man for four, moving to 35 not out.

  6. 50 runs

for Sean Abbottpublished at 15:29 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Surrey 255-7 v Kent 278

A second half-century of the season for Sean Abbott as he follows up the deft four with a clip into the leg side for two.

It took him 57 balls with six fours and a six. More than useful knock, this.

  7. 250 runs

up for Surreypublished at 15:27 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Surrey 253-7 v Kent 278

Tom Lawes bats at nine for Surrey but by the looks of things could probably get in the top five at plenty of other counties.

He creams Michael Hogan through midwicket for a delicious four to get them within a run and Sean Abbott deftly guides the first ball from Jack Leaning to third to move to 48 and bring up the first batting point.

  8. Postpublished at 15:22 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Surrey 244-7 v Kent 278

16 off the latest over from Joey Evison. Tom Lawes gets down on one knee to flick one delivery over his shoulder and away to the deep fine leg boundary.

All of a sudden the deficit is 34 and the partnership is 33 for the eighth wicket. I feel like I've seen this script before somewhere very recently?

  9. Postpublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Gloucs 69-1 v Durham 445

Tight stuff by Ben Raine and Matthew Potts since the resumption. Just three singles added.

Marcus Harris has 31 and Ben Charlesworth is 27 not out.

    Glamorgan 123 v Sussex 410-7

    James ColesImage source, Rex

What an innings from James Coles - but it's brought to an end as James Harris pins him leg before.

A career-best 138 for the teenager has earned Sussex a commanding lead here. Jack Carson is the new man at the crease.

  11. Postpublished at 15:19 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Worcs 83 v Leics 173 & 148-5

Worcestershire hand the ball to Joe Leach as play resumes at New Road. Not a surprise as he only needs one more wicket for a five-for.

He starts with a maiden to Lewis Hill, who remains 44 not out. The Leicestershire lead is still 238.

  12. Postpublished at 15:16 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Surrey 233-7 v Kent 278

Kent have turned to spin at the Oval with Jack Leaning thrown the ball for the 73rd over, which is a maiden.

Sean Abbott has breezed along to 34 from 42. Surrey are 24 short of a batting bonus point and 52 in arrears still.

Kent have their sights on the new ball in seven overs' time, and it can't come soon enough as Abbott larrups Joey Evison over deep midwicket for six.

    The deficit is under 50.

  13. wicket

    WICKET Hollman c Kohler-Cadmore b Leach 0published at 15:16 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Middlesex 119-7 v Somerset 404

Second wicket for Jack Leach, who lures Luke Hollman into the reverse sweep and Tom Kohler-Cadmore is waiting at slip to gobble it up.

Middlesex captain Toby Roland-Jones comes to the crease with his side needing a miracle to avoid the follow-on.

  14. wicket

WICKET White b Turner 1published at 15:10 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Hampshire 376 v Northamptonshire 56

Stumps everywhere. John Turner gets his first Championship wicket.

That is the lowest ever total at the Ageas and Northants' lowest total in Southampton, breaking a 115-year old record.

They are 311 behind with 46 overs remaining in the day. The visitors are staring at a third innings defeat in four matches full in the face.

Keith Barker claimed 4-13 from 12 overs with two apiece for Mohammad Abbas and Ian Holland.

  15. 50 runs

partnership for Nottspublished at 15:09 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Notts 159-2 v Essex 298

Joe Clarks picks up a couple off Jamie Porter to third man as he and Matthew Montgomery post a half-century stand at Trent Bridge.

It's been steady stuff - the current run rate is under three per over - but Notts won't care about that if they end up with a sizeable first-innings lead.

  16. Postpublished at 15:07 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Worcs 83 v Leics 173 & 148-5

We will soon have a full complement of games in action - the rain has left New Road and play will re-start at 3:15pm.

  17. wicket

WICKET Higgins lbw b Leach 17published at 15:06 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Middlesex 117-6 v Somerset 404

A wicket falls to spin for the first time in this match!

Perhaps inevitably, it's Jack Leach who gets it and breaks what had turned into a useful partnership of 47.

Ryan Higgins is deceived by the flight and a straight one strikes him on the pad as he attempts to sweep. Up goes the finger and Middlesex are six down - still trailing by 287.

  18. wicket

WICKET Zaib c Gubbins b Holland 29published at 15:04 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Hampshire 376 v Northamptonshire 56-8

Saif Zaib has been getting into Blast mode. He arches his back to glance a short delivery from John Turner over the slips and away to the fence.

A few balls later, however, and he's picked out Nick Gubbins at extra cover off Ian Holland and suddenly Northants are nine down.

The lowest ever total at the County Ground in Southampton was 57, by the hosts. Northants need one more to match it.

Debutant spinner Alex Russell is last man in to try and get it.

  19. Postpublished at 15:03 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Gloucs 66-1 v Durham 445

We have our first play since lunch at Bristol.

Ben Raine will bow to Marcus Harris, who is 28 not out.

  20. 150 runs

up for Essexpublished at 15:02 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Notts 151-2 v Essex 298

Doug Bracewell finds the edge of Joe Clarke's bat but the ball just eludes the right hand of a diving second slip and runs away for four.

There's a second boundary in the over as Clarke clips it away through the leg side and progresses to 26 not out.
