It's been a fantastic day, I think everyone here has enjoyed it. Credit to Australia, when you lose the toss and your heart sinks a bit on a sunny day, and a flat-ish pitch.

Ollie Robinson takes a single from the final ball of the over to nick the strike from Joe Root, on 95.

    These tailenders, eh?!

People may criticise some of the shots but this is already better than any score England made in the last Ashes. This way works better than the old method, doesn’t it?

    Root 94, Robinson 2

Another quiet over ticks by as England enter one of their rare "absorbing pressure" periods.

It's his first maiden over from 26 overs. Lyon has taken four wickets though. They haven't let a bowler settle.

Well, you don't see that often.

A maiden over in a Test match. Who'd have thought it?

  9. Eng 351-8published at 71 overs

Ollie Robinson survives a sharp yorker first ball from Green, squeezing a single, before Joe Root is beaten all ends up by a beauty that nipped off the seam.

    Great over from Australia's all-rounder.

Horrible slog. The ball full again. A great swipe.

  11. wicket

    Broad b Green 16 (Eng 350-8)

    Stumps splattered!

Stuart Broad departs in the most Stuart Broad style.

He gives himself some room, backing away to leg, and completely misses. The Green giant has his first wicket of the day.

  12. Eng 347-7published at 70 overs

    Root 92, Broad 14

Down on one knee and clobbered for four by Stuart Broad!

Followed by a textbook forward defence.

The guy just lives to entertain.

It's not been reckless, it's certainly been fearless. The modern player practices these shots a lot. These guys are practicing ramps, sweeps and reverse sweeps constantly. Why can't you play them in Test cricket?

It's a day that's ebbed and flowed, lots of entertainment. Even when they've lost wickets, they've carried on. It's not been reckless.

    Just look at it.

I think my colleague Matt Henry has trademarked it the "Roop".

Whatever it's called, it's a work of art.

Ed Fernyhough: Root’s decision making sets him apart from other England players. Several players can play the shots Root can, but nobody in this team is as good as he is at reading a match situation & moving through gears accordingly.

  17. drinks break

    Eng 341-7published at 69 overs

Australia's plan to Stuart Broad is pretty clear, as he ducks uncertainly under a short ball from Pat Cummins.

Just two off the over, and it's time for a drink.

I feel like I need one!

That was a very streaky shot, that was a waft from Broad.

  20. Eng 339-7published at 68 overs

    The nighthawk has landed!

Stuart Broad sweeps Nathan Lyon for four, and follows it with an almighty heave that squirts off the edge and past the stumps for two.

Don't go anywhere. This could be fun.
