    Trail by 315

Moeen Ali goes around the wicket to left-handed Travis Head, who looks a lot more composed than he did immediately before the break.

There are still a few clouds overhead at Edgbaston but the sun is threatening the break through.

There's huge cheers from the crowd as Stuart Broad is announced as the bowler at the other end.

The England players get into a huddle on the boundary before making their way to the middle.

Usman Khawaja and Travis Head are at the crease for Australia.

Moeen Ali will open up the afternoon session.

David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith in one session. Can we top that?

I'm sure England will give it a good go.

While I go and grab some lunch, I'll hand you over to Tom Mallows to take you through what promises to be another fascinating session.

I just had to give way on the staircase to Nathan Lyon returning from the nets. Australia really are worried if Garry has been sent to practise his batting.

Here it is then. The big one...

Ben Stokes to Steve Smith. A lovely dramatic pause from Marais Erasmus before raising his finger, truly sensing the significance of the moment.

Smith reviewed but it came back with red threes, he was gone and walked off amid bedlam in the stands.

That got the crowd up after a fairly quiet start and Edgbaston erupted when Stuart Broad had Marnus Labuschagne caught behind with the very next ball.

A brilliant one-handed catch from Jonny Bairstow and Australia were suddenly 29-2.

So that's the positive for Australia. Let's talk about what went right for England...

Stuart Broad v David Warner was always going to be a battle worth watching, even if it has been a bit one-sided.

It remained that way as a horrible shot from Warner saw him drag on for nine to hand Broad and England their first wicket of the series...

  13. ANALYSIS: How Khawaja has been using his feet v Alipublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 17 June 2023

While it has undoubtedly been England's morning, the one positive for Australia has been Usman Khawaja.

The opener has struggled on his previous tours of England but goes to lunch unbeaten on 40 and has played particularly well against Moeen Ali...

England used seven bowlers in the session, one of which was Harry Brook. At one point there were eight catchers for Steve Smith. That's on top of the declaration last night. Australia will feel like they have been put on a never-ending merry-go-round.

Such a marked difference in the two morning sessions. Both teams losing three wickets but how much better does England’s aggressive approach make that seem now? Food for thought for the Aussies!

The contrast in styles could not be more obvious than in that session.

Australia have decided to knuckle down, bat time and grind England into the dirt but England picked up three very handy wickets.

It has been a different tempo, but still thoroughly enjoyable.

  17. Lunch - Aus 78-3published at 31 overs

    Trail by 315

A maiden from Joe Root to end the session. He was a tad too wide and Usman Khawaja was happy to leave anything outside off.

What a session for England! Stuart Broad got things going with two wickets in two balls - David Warner (of course) and then Marnus Labuschagne for a golden duck.

Then, late in the session, the captain stepped up. Ben Stokes with the massive wicket of Steve Smith.

Time for one more before lunch and Joe Root is going to bowl it.
