That's a shot, with ease as well. It wasn't that bad a ball! He swivelled on that and smashed that through mid-wicket! Ominous signs for England.

Shot!
Slightly short from Stuart Broad and Usman Khawaja is onto it in a flash, pulling with authority through mid-wicket for the first boundary of the day.
Hooping would be an exaggeration, Kit, but there is more lateral movement than we saw last night.

Is it hooping?

Another thought on the declaration. Only four times in history have England batted first in a home Test, made more than 393 and lost. The last time was 25 years ago, when Murali took 16 in the match. The last time it happened against Australia, Don Bradman was playing.
We have a run! Anderson loses his line with the last ball of the over and Khawaja flicks it down to fine leg for a single.
England will be clinging to that play and miss earlier in the over for hope that chances will come if they put the ball in the right areas.

A good ball that, there's where that skip is coming just off the wicket.

That's the area where Khawaja is vulnerable!
Beauty! Jimmy Anderson produces a cracker that swings away late to beat Usman Khawaja's outside edge.
That gets the crowd going after a, um, steady first couple of overs!
Here's where Stuart Broad found his success against David Warner in 2019.

I think we're going to see a different approach from Australia, that's for sure. They're going to take their time. I can't see Labuschagne or Smith doing a Bairstow. I think 400 is about par, they could even try and get themselves near 600!
Three maidens on the trot to start the day.
David Warner is squared up slightly by Stuart Broad midway through the over but still defends solidly enough.
The left-hander twice pushes the ball towards cover, hoping for a single but can't beat the in-field.

I think it's going to be a day of toil for England's bowlers. Anderson might get the ball to swing but they may struggle.

Can I just say that guy in your picture has clearly put a toad hat on an Aladdin costume.

It might be difficult to source a plumber in the Birmingham area today - they're all at the cricket.

We've had as many maidens today as we had the whole of yesterday, two!
Warner 8, Khawaja 4
There is a hint of swing for Jimmy Anderson as he bowls over the wicket to the left-handed Usman Khawaja.
The pitch itself still looks great for batting and Khawaja looks pretty secure. He almost nibbles at the last delivery as Anderson gets it to shape away nicely but thinks better of it in the end.
Maiden over.

Was this cloud and stickiness in the forecast? What I saw suggested the sun would remain until at least tomorrow. These conditions might not have been what England expected when they declared. Sometimes you make your own luck.
Here comes Jimmy Anderson. He didn't bowl last night but these conditions look ideal for England's swing king!
David Warner solidly defends the last ball of the over but is then subject to a few words from Stuart Broad, who felt the Australia opener had walked down the middle of the pitch.
Something and nothing but Broad made sure the umpire was aware of what had happened.
