Broad is 36, Anderson 40, Moeen 35, Stokes 32. We need fresher legs…. Bring back Tufnell!

Alex Carey nails a drive back down the ground for four off Moeen Ali. There was some power behind that!
Moeen comes back well and there is an appeal for caught behind fifth ball. Jonny Bairstow was interested by Moeen just shakes his head.
UltraEdge shows it was close... but no bat involved. Good call not to review.

We're claiming wickets? It took me a couple of minutes to dismiss Travis Head earlier.

Neil in Dublin got Travis Head out in minutes this afternoon...

How's that for a 40-year-old Test bowler through 180 Test matches? James Anderson is chasing that like a 20-year-old. That's outstanding.
A productive over for Australia brings them seven runs.
They'll enjoy that but Jimmy Anderson won't. Twice in the over he has to chase the ball down to the deep third boundary and flick it back before the rope.
He can be grumpy at the best of times so I doubt he'll have appreciated that. He did it very well, mind.

Ever since his recall, Khawaja’s been playing every game with the mental freedom of simply appreciating being there. From thinking his career was over, he was Test cricket’s leading scorer in 2022 and now has a maiden Ashes ton IN England. Quite the story.
Just a single from Moeen Ali's latest as Usman Khawaja pushes the last delivery wide of mid-off.
The spinner has got two key wickets today and is now getting through his overs quickly to help get England to the new ball.

We have seen a window into the mindset of both captains and how they are going to use their seamers, especially if we continue to see similar pitches to this one.
A lot of the seamers have bowled short spells with spinners Nathan Lyon and Moeen Ali have bowling a mountain of overs. I wonder if that is because they are aware of the compact nature of the series and don't want to overbowl them.
Meanwhile, it looks like England have now managed to get the ball changed again. It's only nine overs until they get a brand new one.
Broad gets wickets of Warner and Labuschagne with back-to-back deliveries
If we're going to play that game then I've got four-for so far today.
Credit has to go to Tom for his toil in that middle session and a key wicket in Travis Head... but, still, it's not quite getting Warner, Labuschagne and Smith before lunch.

Re Isa Guha "taking" wickets... can I please claim them as well, having tuned in for the first time immediately prior to Broad's double wicket burst, then again immediately prior to Moeen getting Head out, then again just before Moeen's latest wicket?

England try to get the ball changed again but to no avail.
Alex Carey hammers the next ball from Ollie Robinson, pouncing on the width, but Ollie Pope makes a good stop in the covers.
Maiden over.
Ben Stokes' spell is over and Ollie Robinson is back into the attack.

Hate to say it but that knock from Khawaja is at least as good as Root's was. Chance-less and in total control.
James, St Albans
I’m English and obviously an England fan but I’m almost happy for Khawaja there, the way he celebrated that century, I can appreciate it’s been a superb knock.
Christian Evans
Moeen Ali races through another one. This one costs just a single.
There is also a rare misjudgement from Usman Khawaja as he pokes at a ball outside off and is thankful that it turns enough to beat the edge.

So Bairstow's missed stumping cost 38 runs. When you take into account the 78 he made and the stunning catch I think he is net positive... just.

It is hard to find a weakness in Usman Khawaja's game at the moment once he gets in. He is so, so composed.
Carey 2, Khawaja 102
After all the emotion of that celebration, Usman Khawaja is able to bring himself back and see off the last couple of deliveries of Ben Stokes' over.
Matthew Henry

Well I don’t think I’ve seen a more emotional century celebration than that.
