  7. new ball

    Aus 264-5published at 80 overs

Joe Root gets through a maiden but England will be ruing that dropped catch.

Jonny Bairstow, in particular, will be hoping they can get rid of Carey quickly with the second new ball.

England take it immediately and Stuart Broad will bowl the next over.

  9. dropped catch

Alex Carey dropped on 26published at 79.2 overs

    Trail by 129

Is that a dropped catch? Joe Root bowls to Alex Carey, the left-hander pushes forward and the ball passes very close to the edge.

Jonny Bairstow can't cling on and UltraEdge shows there were a little nick.

    Another missed opportunity for England.

  10. drinks break

    Aus 264-5published at 79 overs

The players wander to the outfield to take drinks at the end of another Harry Brook over.

It's been a decent first half of this evening session, Australia perhaps just edging it?

The Hollies Stand will be getting increasingly lively as we head towards the close, though. Can they help inspire England with the second new ball?

The Telegraph's Will Macpherson: Fascinating development of England's strategy to just bring Harry Brook on every time they want to dry things up, in the knowledge that the batter will be so paralysed by fear of getting out to this filth that they are left shotless.

  12. Aus 260-5published at 78 overs

Five from Joe Root's over with Alex Carey showing a bit more aggression.

He hits over the off side but doesn't middle it and the ball hangs in the air for a while but lands safely in a gap.

Harry Brook will continue from the other end.

  19. 6 runs

    Aus 255-5published at 76 overs

Spin might be looking more dangerous than seam but that doesn't stop Alex Carey taking 10 from the last two balls of Moeen Ali's over.

A delicate paddle sweep for four is followed by a checked drive that is immaculately timed and sails back down the ground for six.

  20. Aus 245-5published at 75 overs

Ollie Robinson continues and gets Usman Khawaja poking slightly outside off.

The Australia opener manages to get the ball wide of the slips though and down to deep third for two.

Good over from Robinson but, as it stands, spin looks more dangerous than seam. I doubt anyone expected that in the first two days of this Ashes series.
