The England bowlers have not hit a consistent line and length with the new ball. And on this surface anything that is slightly off will be punished.

  2. Aus 292-5published at 87 overs

A slightly untidy over from Stuart Broad. He struggles to find a consistent line and four leg byes follow the Usman Khawaja boundary.

With all the Foakes in messages, who would you drop? Can't drop Brook, arguably Bairstow can't be dropped as his batting is tip top...

    Andy in Newcastle

I don't think there is any arguably about it Andy, Bairstow has to play for his batting. So, as you say, who do you drop?

  4. Aus 287-5published at 86.3 overs

Short from Stuart Broad and pulled away through wide mid-on by Usman Khawaja.

He's making the most of his extra chance.

  5. Aus 282-5published at 86 overs

    Carey 35, Khawaja 119

Probing over from Jimmy Anderson. A maiden.

He nearly tempts Usman Khawaja into a nibble outside off but the left-hander just about manages to restrain himself.

It has been a very disciplined innings from the Australia opener.

  6. Aus 282-5published at 85 overs

    Trail by 111

Gorgeous on drive for four to end the over from Alex Carey. This has been a good knock from the Australian wicketkeeper so far.

Stuart Broad pulls a bemused face as he turns to watch the ball run away to the fence. That just about sums up England's last half hour.

It's not just Usman Khawaja who has had a life in the past 20 minutes or so.

Alex Carey edged behind off Joe Root in the last over before the new ball but Jonny Bairstow couldn't hold on to the catch.

  8. Aus 277-5published at 84 overs

Just another single from the over. The second new ball hasn't had quite the impact that England would have liked.

At least not so far. On the one occasion it did, Stuart Broad overstepped.

Usman Khawaja has been flawless today. There have been wickets falling at the other end but he has just stayed in his own bubble.

  10. Aus 276-5published at 83.3 overs

Lovely shot. Full and swinging away from the left-hander by Jimmy Anderson but Usman Khawaja just eases it through point for four.

It's hard enough to get 10 wickets on this pitch let alone 13! Why so many no-balls?

  12. Aus 272-5published at 83 overs

A couple of singles from Stuart Broad's over as Alex Carey and Usman Khawaja each turn the ball into a gap on the leg side.

England need something to lift the crowd again, it's gone a bit quiet at Edgbaston.

‎Feel as though England are a few mistakes away from dominating this game. The dropped catches, missed stumpings and the no ball. A few of the wickets yesterday were avoidable. Take those out the game and we’re flying.

Stuart Broad is revving the crowd up. That's one of his official jobs now.

    Nighthawk and crowd revver.

    Look away now, Stuart...

  16. Aus 270-5published at 82 overs

    Carey 30, Khawaja 113

As you'd expect, Jimmy Anderson is on the money from the off.

He gets through a maiden to Usman Khawaja. No no-ball issues for Jimmy.

Jimmy Anderson will share the new ball this time around.

It's painful watching Bairstow keeping to spinners.

    John in Sheffield

Hate to jump on the Foakes train right now, but the bloke just scored a century and chased 500 for Surrey - he doesn't drop those or miss stumpings. Sorry JB - I'm afraid that isn't good enough. Stick to fielding.

    Anon

Sadly, Bairstow isn't good enough behind the stumps. Two very simple chances missed today and it is going to be costly.

Well, it is not the outcome they wanted but that non-wicket of Usman Khawaja has really brought the crowd to life.

England will be mightily frustrated, though. A dropped catch and a wicket off a no-ball in the last two overs. A life each for Carey and Khawaja.
