There is not much swing out there so James Anderson is bowling dead straight with a silly mid-on and silly mid-off staring right into the batters eyes.

Cameron Green is not biting though, blocking out a maiden.

Green just needs to play the support role for as long as Usman Khawaja is at the other end.

The problem Australia have had today is building partnerships. Cameron Green needs to be the one to stay with Khawaja.

It's definitely turning. If Australia can get close to England's score, they will be happy because they've got Nathan Lyon in their ranks.

But they won't be thinking about that yet. These two have got a big job to do.

  4. Aus 171-4published at 54 overs

Joe Root is getting some turn outside Usman Khawaja's off stump, but it is a little too wide to trouble the Aussie batter.

We have about 25 minutes to go until tea. Another wicket could really swing the momentum back in England's direction.

Could do with another wicket soon. 75 to 100-run lead for England would be useful.

One fancies that if England could just get Khawaja out the Aussies would fold very quickly.

Cameron Green is a bit of a monster. He gets from one end to the other in about three strides!

  7. Aus 170-4published at 53 overs

A thick edge from Cameron Green arrows towards Ollie Pope at gully, but it was always going down and bounces well short of the England man.

James Anderson is occasionally finding a bit of life in this surface but nothing to really concern the Australia batters.

If you had the 54th over in the 'throw the ball to Joe Root' sweepstake, you are in luck.

    Here he is.

  8. Aus 169-4published at 52 overs

Usman Khawaja is looking so serene out there, he has rarely offered England a chance all day.

Here is the inflatable football by the way, before it was confiscated.

The TV pictures have just shown a steward sitting next to a huge pile of inflatables, so guess they have been busy this afternoon. But no sooner do they grab one, another appears!

Rocky: Australia should declare now and throw the mind games back at the England captain 230 runs behind. Declaz ball.

  10. Aus 167-4published at 51 overs

Ben Stokes is moving his fielders all over the place to try and snare another wicket, including a leg slip, silly mid-on and silly mid-off.

A direct hit from Ollie Robinson keeps Cameron Green honest as he pushes for a quick single, but the all-rounder was well in his ground.

Loud boos are coming from the Hollies Stand. I think a steward has got hold of the inflatable football.

Hang on a minute - what about the stunning one-hander that Bairstow took to get rid of Labuschagne? How fickle we are!

    Jon, Purley

Swings and roundabouts... the catch Bairstow took to remove Labuschane could have easily spilled.

Anything that's a fraction short, Khawaja is on to it in a flash.

  13. Aus 165-4published at 50 overs

A rather brave Australia fan stands up at the front of the Hollies Stand to signal four after Usman Khawaja pulls a short Moeen Ali delivery to the rope.

Fortunately the crowd seem too distracted by a giant inflatable football to care.

Travis Head was furious with himself as his dismissal by Moeen Ali as he was looking well set up to that point.

James Anderson goes around the wicket to Usman Khawaja with two slips and two men on the drive.

Khawaja does well to work the ball through mid-wicket for two to move to 71.

Foakes would have had the bails off in a flash. Keeping to the spinners is where England miss him.

    Steve in Worthing

I think we all knew as soon as Foakes was dropped that at some point Bairstow was going to do something rubbish behind the stumps, hopefully that’s the only mistake

    Thomas Leonard

Just to be against the trend... Jos Buttler would have got that stumping.

Cameron Green gets off the mark with a nice late cut down to third man for three runs.

He really should be back in the hutch, though:

Moeen Ali gets a warm reception from the Edgbaston crowd at the end of that over, they have been rather quiet since lunch but things are bubbling up now.

Boy, did England need that wicket though.

What been great about this match so far is that just when one team starts to get on top they are dragged back.

    Definite 2005 vibes.
