That's a very well-executed pull shot from Steve Smith. He got into such a good position, his hands were nice and high so there was no danger of it going in the air.

Stuart Broad did nothing wrong, it was just an excellent shot.

WinViz still has Australia comfortably in the lead. They're a 65% chance to win.

  3. Aus 84-2published at 24 overs

Stuart Broad bumps Steve Smith with the fourth delivery of the over but the Australia batter is able to hook him for four behind square. Smith content to see off the next two by getting himself right behind.

Ben Stokes turns to James Anderson.

England are desperate for another wicket before the close of play. They've winkled out two because otherwise Australia have batted quite serenely.

  5. Aus 80-2published at 23.2 overs

Usman Khawaja picks up a single off Stuart Broad which brings the fidgeting and idiosyncratic Steve Smith to the striker's end with four left in the over.

Here's how Broad got rid of Smith's batting soul mate Marnus Labuschagne moments ago.

Dave Bookham: Bazball is about to fail, they needed 300 plus to win this. Khawaja and Smith will see Australia through.

Fail? Come on, Dave, England have won 11 of the last 13 Tests. Even if it becomes 11 of 14, to call it failure feels harsh!

  7. Aus 79-2published at 23 overs

The former England skipper is, indeed, into the attack.

He tosses the ball up outside of Usman Khawaja's off stump a few times but the Australia opener refuses to nibble on the bait.

Khawaja pushes a fuller delivery from the final ball of Root's over for a single to keep the strike.

Twice in the game, Marnus Labuschagne has been out feeling for the ball well outside off stump, well outside his eyeline.

Stuart Broad has got his length right in this over. Maybe the in-swinger the ball before got him thinking about it but when he edged that one, the ball was on about sixth stump.

Stuart Broad turned and asked the umpire about the front foot before celebrating. Ben Stokes did too. Stokes punched the air once he got the thumbs up.

Labuschagne stands there devastated as though he can't believe it. Then slowly he heads off, tucking his bat under his arm.

That's the first of the big wickets England need.
