This is turning into a bit of a masterclass by Australia. It turns out slow and steady wins the race... who knew?

    Crunched.

You get the feeling that David Warner is relishing this task.

At Robinson's pace, if you drop it short to Khawaja and Warner they'll just say, 'thank you very much'.

  4. Aus 57-0published at 16 overs

No sign of Ben Stokes with the ball just yet as Ollie Robinson continues. Australia's opening pair have soaked up the pressure superbly so far.

Robinson hangs it a little short with his third ball and David Warner comfortably pulls him to the boundary to four.

The crowd are still very subdued. England desperately need a breakthrough.

The dancing feet of Usman Khawaja. He carries on on his merry way. He's carrying on in the same manner as the first innings.

It has been promising from Moeen Ali so far.

The seamers will chip away and try to get a bit of reverse swing but you feel that the spinners - Moeen Ali and Joe Root - will have to play an important role if England are going to win.

  7. Aus 50-0published at 15 overs

Moeen Ali wheels away round the wicket and Usman Khawaja pushes at his fourth delivery. It finds the edge of the Australia opener's bat, but skims the turf well short of Joe Root at first slip.

Sensing an opportunity to a flighted delivery from Moeen's next ball Khawaja shuffles down the pitch and lofts it to the boundary for four. Good use of the feet.

It is calling for a bit of magic from Ben Stokes. He's got that knack. He got Steve Smith, the key breakthrough, in the first innings.

Joe Root had a word with Ben Stokes between overs there. I wonder if Root’s telling Stokes to bring himself on?

  10. Aus 45-0published at 14.0 overs

No cricketing Damiens (Fleming or Martyn) present to make that relevant, Chris.

Anyway, Usman Khawaja's patience to Ollie Robinson pays off as he is given something fuller and crisply square drives him to the boundary for four.

    England look a bit flat.

England scored 666 in total. Bad omen?

These two Australia openers have looked composed but we all know: it only takes one ball...

  13. Aus 41-0published at 13.2 overs

Ollie Robinson gives David Warner a bit of width and he punches it behind square for four. Next ball he works it into the leg side for a single.

Both Aussie batters look comfortable at the moment.

Moeen Ali has had some success against David Warner in Tests, he's got him out four times for 145 runs.

But Khawaja has been very successful against Moeen - 163 runs for one dismissal.

Moeen has a good record against left-handers, he averages 30 to them and 40 to right-handers.

That was full and it did turn and bounce. Something for Khawaja to think about.

Perhaps a bit of encouragement for Moeen in that over.

  16. Aus 36-0published at 12.4 overs

The crowd splutter into life after Moeen Ali beats the outside edge of Usman Khawaja's defensive prod with a ball which spins away from the left hander after gripping on the pitch.

There is no sign of Khawaja dancing down to try and hit through the off side like he did in the first innings.

He's batting very patiently. I think he's waiting for something short.

Meanwhile, Stuart Broad and David Warner are having a bit of a chat...

  19. Aus 35-0published at 12 overs

Usman Khawaja, shirt buttoned all the way to the top and the ends of his collar flaps turned up, looks like he's digging in for the long haul here.

He has all the time in the world against Ollie Robinson and is more than content to see off a second consecutive maiden.

It's the kind of pitch where you want to give the spinner the indication that you are going to go forward, maybe dance down to it, but really you want to play off the back foot.
