  1. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 80.3 overs

    Carey c & b Root 20 (Aus 227-8)

    No, is the answer!

Ben Stokes fancies one more over of Joe Root with the old ball to Alex Carey and it's paid dividends.

Carey absolutely smashes the ball back at Root and after two previous drops - albeit a pair of very tough chances - this time the former England captain somehow clings on.

That almost took Root's head off as he leaned back, but he somehow held it. Brilliant.

Anyone else think how well England use the new ball is going to be key?

    Nick, Sheffield

This has the feel of Australia's game. A lot will depend on the new ball.

    Chris

It's squeaky bum time in this Test now.

  3. Aus 227-7published at 80 overs

Pat Cummins nervously taps his bat as he crouches down waiting for Ben Stokes to bowl.

Stokes' fifth ball is a bouncer which is an attempt to force Cummins to take on the hook shot, with men in the deep, but he resists.

Will England will take the new ball immediately? It is available...

James Charman: Is there anything better than Ashes-related stress on a Tuesday evening?

Andrew Priestley: The nerves are more than jangling between these two Aussie batsman. Someone’s going to chop one onto their own stumps shortly.

Mark, Kent: Declared too early, Bazball doesn’t work, should have picked another bowler. Imagine being as negative as some of the commenters on here today! What a Test match this has been and the captain has more than played his part.

Joe Root is bitterly disappointed with himself but it was a really tough chance.

  7. Aus 227-7published at 79 overs

Alex Carey with sweep for four off Joe Root's off-spin. The former England captain was half interested in an lbw, but it's clearly gone off the Aussie wicketkeeper's bat.

    It's still all very tense.

The penultimate ball of Root's over goes straight and just misses the edge of Pat Cummins' bat. The sixth delivery is drilled low at Root's ankles. Root gets a hand on it, but it's another half chance.

The second new ball is available in two overs. That should make things interesting.

  9. Aus 219-7published at 78 overs

Ben Stokes is down on pace and is effectively bowling cutters to Pat Cummins. Alex Carey is an eager beaver at the other end looking for a single.

Here's the tough chance that Joe Root put down moments ago.

Jacob Wadsworth: What is going on? Feels like there's going to be a wicket every delivery!

Adam: Australia are getting a lot of luck here with these missed chances - so close yet so far. Keep at it guys.

Jonny Winterburn: This could be the ultimate repost to the naysayers. No way if England hadn't declared or forced it on day 3 would we be in this situation. Draw all day long otherwise. Super super Stokesy.

  11. Aus 219-7published at 77 overs

Ben Stokes continues. The new ball is due in three overs.

Stuart Broad, you sense, is licking his lips...

There has been a real statement of intent from Alex Carey these last few overs.

  14. Aus 218-7published at 77 overs

Pat Cummins slaps Joe Root's second ball for four over mid-off before he sees off four more dot balls.

Australia need 63 runs more to win. England need three wickets,

Dave Aloo: Is there a German word for “staying in the office late to watch the Ashes”?

Alexander Blakey: What a coincidence! Yesterday, I put the bins out and Labuschagne nicks it. Then I go and get a pint of milk and Smith nicks it behind. Today, do a quick bit of vacuuming and Khawaja plays it on to his stumps! So do housework and Aussies lose wickets!

Steve Allen: I wish I was as confident as WinViz.

A clear plan from the Australian batsmen. They are going to go hard here.

  18. Aus 214-7published at 76 overs

Australia have started counter attacking against Ben Stokes.

Pat Cummins skies a pull which lands safely behind square despite a despairing dive from Ollie Pope.

Moments later Alex Carey goes down the ground but is unable to quite find the boundary. Two more to the total, though.

Australia's players are pacing nervously in the dressing room as Ben Stokes bowls to Alex Carey, who almost drags the first ball of his latest over on to his stumps.

Barney Allen: “It's not the despair, Laura. I can take the despair. It's the hope I can't stand.”

Tim Callaghan: Cannot believe Australia has let this very achievable total get away from them.

Toby: Everytime I look away from the Ashes we get a wicket. Quick someone give me something to do!
