Root drops catch Carey 10published at 74.5 overs
Alex Carey smashes the ball high back at Joe Root. He's got everything on that, but Root is unable to cling on to the catch.
That was part self-preservation, part dropped catch.

The ball-tracking technology shows the ball would have missed leg stump. Height was an issue as well.
Alex Carey is not out.

Could be missing leg?

Did it hit the pad before it hit the bat? Jonny Bairstow seems convinced.
Joe Root has struck Alex Carey on the pad.
Vociferous appeal from England's fielders.
Given not out on field, and Ben Stokes goes for a review for lbw. Nothing to lose here...

I knew my text at 1736 would work. You’re welcome.

Australia skipper Pat Cummins is the new batter.
Ben Stokes, hair slicked back like an Italian mobster in the Godfather, hurries into the crease but counterpart Cummins is happy to protect his stumps, and leave, at the moment.

Cape Town 2020, anyone?
Alex Carey misses a sweep off Joe Root's last ball. Faint appeals for an edge, but he's not hit that and England will not waste time on a review.
Ben Stokes once more into the breach.

That Ben Stokes wicket is a huge moment.
Daily Mail's Lawrence Booth: I hate to say this, but rain could be hitting Edgbaston around 6.30 for 15-20 minutes. It's 5.45, and Australia need 72, England three wickets.
Joe Root continues round the wicket for England and Alex Carey looks to counter. The Aussie wicketkeeper inside edges a big drive into his pad and the ball ballons up.
Collective hearts inside Edgbaston skip a beat, but it drops safe.

It is getting pretty close to 2005 the way the board is running.

Bedlam. Absolute bedlam.
Khawaja b Stokes 65 (Aus 209-7)
CHOPPED ON! Out of nothing.
A minor break in Usman Khawaja's concentration, perhaps.
It's a slower ball from Ben Stokes - not the best, in all honesty - which holds in the pitch and a thick inside edge off Khawaja's bat deflects the ball into the stumps.
Stokes barely celebrates. A soft dismissal, but frankly who cares?
A little short and wide from Ben Stokes and Alex Carey looks to cash in with a pull shot. However, a tremendous piece of fielding form Ollie Pope, who dives full length, ensures its nothing more than a single.
How vital might those three saved runs be? Fine margins. Australia require 72 to win.

If Australia are going to get over the line they are going to have to take the odd risk.
It is more likely to be Carey, with Khawaja happy to play the anchor role.
The floodlights are on at Edgbaston. Joe Root has a brief mid-over conflab with Ben Stokes and they make a minor tweak to the field.
Just one run from the over off the bat of Usman Khawaja.

All this talk of Bazball and it’s going to be a proper Test batsmen performance across two innings from Khawaja that wins this Test.

On my way to Stonehenge for Summer Solstice, ETA 18.30. If England haven't won by then, I'll see if I can find someone to cast a spell.
