Josh Tongue will be making his second Test appearance at the home of cricket

There is tremendous pride at rain-hit New Road this morning with the news that Worcestershire pace bowler Josh Tongue will play in the second Ashes Test at Lord's tomorrow.

Tongue made his Test debut against Ireland earlier this month, taking 5-66 in the second innings, but he will now get a crack at Australia.

With England's team already announced, that meant Durham fast bowler Matthew Potts was released to rejoin his team-mates at Grace Road last night.

He comes into the Durham bowling line-up to replace the unfortunate Stanley McAlindon, who had already been nominated to stand down if Potts was available.

  3. 300 runs

up for Somersetpublished at 11:36 British Summer Time 27 June 2023

    Somerset 163 & 303-4 v Nottinghamshire 186

An edge from George Bartlett, but it is low and wide of the two slips and runs down to the vacant boundary at third.

That brings up the 300 for Somerset. Bartlett has 127 and James Rew 33. Their partnership is now worth 72.

The Cider Boys lead by 280 and at this rate, they may be able to declare at some point this afternoon.

  4. wicket

WICKET Qadri c Zaib b Russell 8published at 11:35 British Summer Time 27 June 2023

    Northants 237 v Kent 589-7

Hamid Qadri slaps Alex Russell straight to Saif Zaib at cover and Kent are seven down.

Kent lead by 352 and are trying to hurry up the scoring. Daniel Bell-Drummond is on 290 from 421 balls.

Wes Agar is in to add some runs to his day one five-wicket haul.

  5. Potts back but Raine strikes for Durhampublished at 11:34 British Summer Time 27 June 2023

    Durham 517-6 dec, Leicestershire 348-5

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

Leicestershire were going along nicely with the bat last night, thanks to that century from Durham-bound Colin Ackermann.

And they won't be happy to see Matthew Potts back after being released by England last night.

He took 13 wickets here in a Championship match last September, finishing with career-best figures of 13-101.

But it is Ben Raine who has struck first, trapping Wiaan Mulder just after he had gone to his half-century.

  6. Postpublished at 11:31 British Summer Time 27 June 2023

    Hampshire 419 v Middlesex 150 & 4-0

Middlesex will indeed bat again. 269 adrift. They have only passed 250 once this season, in either first or second innings. Hampshire will fancy their chances of polishing this off today.

Sam Robson and Mark Stoneman head out to try to make sure that does not happen. Robson cracks the first ball for four. Nice start.

Keith Barker has switched ends with an eye on creating footholes at either end to benefit the spin of Felix Organ, according to BBC Radio Solent's Kevan James. Clever.

  7. Postpublished at 11:28 British Summer Time 27 June 2023

    Essex 457 v Warwickshire 158 & 91-1

A cracking shot off the back foot from Rob Yates gets him four off Simon Harmer.

It is also a good way to try to disrupt the three close catchers Harmer has in place on the offside.

The other noticeable thing is how the Chelmsford outfield looks like a subcontinental one, given how dry it looks.

    It's not green, it's yellow.

  8. Postpublished at 11:26 British Summer Time 27 June 2023

    Northants 237 v Kent 576-6

Alex Russell drags down a short ball and Daniel Bell-Drummond spins on a sixpence to pull it away to the fence at deep square to move into the 280s.

Hamid Qadri is in the middle with him now and will be keeping a close eye on the surface as Alex Russell does seem to be getting a bit of turn off it.

  9. wicket

WICKET De Caires lbw b Abbott 28published at 11:21 British Summer Time 27 June 2023

    Hampshire 419 v Middlesex 150

150 all out. Two in the over for Kyle Abbott who nips one back to thump Josh De Caires on the pads. The finger goes up and 269 is the deficit. Presuming that Hampshire will ask them to follow-on. We'll know soon.

Liam Dawson finishes with 6-40 from 22 overs.

  10. wicket

WICKET Helm b Abbott 9published at 11:20 British Summer Time 27 June 2023

    Hampshire 419 v Middlesex 149-9

Runs have been in short supply this morning and Kyle Abbott has absolutely cleaned up Tom Helm, who felt safe to shoulder arms, only for the ball to nip back a huge amount to send his off stump cartwheeling.

Ethan Bamber is the last man, joining Josh De Caires who is on 28.

    The deficit is still 270.

  11. Harmer already twirling awaypublished at 11:19 British Summer Time 27 June 2023

    Essex 457 v Warwickshire 158 & 83-1

No surprise here but Simon Harmer is already bowling his third over of the day having shared the duties with Sam Cook.

This is Harmer's 37th over of the match. In comparison, no other Essex bowler has bowled more than 15!

But with a lead of over 200, this is when a spinner of Harmer's class comes into his own.

  12. wicket

WICKET Evison st McManus b Russell 27published at 11:16 British Summer Time 27 June 2023

    Northants 237 v Kent 567-6

Joey Evison charges at a flighted delivery from Alex Russell, misses the ball and Lewis McManus whips off his bails neatly.

It's a third wicket for Russell but the lead is 330.

  13. Contest between bat and ballpublished at 11:14 British Summer Time 27 June 2023

    Somerset 163 & 281-4 v Nottinghamshire 186

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Radio Somerset

I am a bit torn between wanting this partnership to continue and wanting to see the new ball actually doing something and making the batters' life difficult.

  14. Postpublished at 11:11 British Summer Time 27 June 2023

    Northants 237 v Kent 561-5

Daniel Bell-Drummond goes past Matt Walker with the fifth highest individual innings for Kent and now has the great keeper-batter Leslie Ames in his sights with his 295 posted 90 years ago.

Joey Evison reminds us he's there too with a flighted four off Alex Russell to move to 23. The Kent lead is 324.

  15. Postpublished at 11:08 British Summer Time 27 June 2023

    Northants 237 v Kent 555-5

Strangled appeal from Ben Sanderson for LBW against Daniel Bell-Drummond but umpire Rob Bailey reckons that's hit him outside the line, and he's right.

Bell-Drummond picks up two off the final ball of the over to join his coach Matt Walker on a total of 275*.

  16. Notts have new Kookaburra ball in handpublished at 11:05 British Summer Time 27 June 2023

    Somerset 163 & 272-4 v Nottinghamshire 186

After a maiden over from Lyndon James, Brett Hutton has a new Kookaburra in his hand.

Trailing by 245, Notts need to make some early inroads this morning before their fourth innings target becomes too large.

And Hutton will not like seeing George Bartlett unleash a glorious on-drive for the first runs of the morning.

A nice way to pick up for Bartlett as he moves to 113.

Wonder how Daniel Bell-Drummond slept last night...

His unbeaten 271 is already the sixth highest individual total in the history of Kent cricket, he picked off some big names in the final stages of day two, including the great Frank Woolley and his former captain, now England chief, Rob Key.

Next in his sights is Matt Walker, who made an unbeaten 275 against Somerset at Canterbury in 1996. Walker also happens to be his current coach, though don't expect any cruel declarations.

Only three Kent players have scored more than that.

The legendary Les Ames made 295 in 1933, while Bill Ashdown passed 300 in an innings twice, posting an unbeaten 305 in 1935, the year after setting the Kent record of 332 against Essex at Brentwood.

Sandwiched between those knocks is Sean Dickson's mammoth 318 which came against Northants at Beckenham in July 2017.

Bell-Drummond knows all about that one. He opened with Dickson that day and put on 129 for the opening wicket before falling for 49. He then watched Dickson and Joe Denly add 382 for the second wicket in a total of 701-7 declared.

Is this now his time to shine?

Colin Ackermann batting for LeicestershireImage source, Rex Features

Colin Ackermann is joining Durham next season, and he has shown the Division Two leaders exactly what they are getting after his unbeaten century yesterday.

Ackermann resumes on 104, as part of Leicestershire's 335-4 at Grace Road, still 182 runs behind Durham's mammoth 517-6 declared, helped by Ollie Robinson's 167 not out.

Yorkshire scored even more as they declared on 550-9 in just 130 overs, after hundreds from Fin Bean, George Hill and Matt Revis.

In reply, Miles Hammond was still there on 84 for Gloucestershire, but Yorkshire kept chipping away at the other end to leave the visitors 232-5, trailing by 318.

A magnificent stand of 267 between Wayne Madsen and Leus du Plooy has put Derbyshire in control away to Worcestershire.

From 38-3, they took the score to 305 before Madsen fell for 143, but du Plooy reached stumps on 159 as part of their 374-5, a lead of 137.

The most even contest is at Sophia Gardens where Glamorgan resume their second innings on 46-0, a lead of 85 over Sussex.

Three wickets on his debut for Australia leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson helped the Welsh county take a first-innings lead of 29 as they bowled out second-placed Sussex for 203, which was solidified by openers Zain-ul-Hassan and Andrew Salter getting to stumps unscathed.
