Sussex 271-9, chasing 359 to beat Glamorgan

Nine overs remain. Sussex aren't going to get the 88 runs they need. They can make this feel very much like a loss for Glamorgan though, if they can hold on.

Another speculative appeal for a catch at point is turned down. No bat or glove near that. Oli Carter is booting Mitch Swepson away for fun at present. Glamorgan need new ideas.

  2. Raine returnspublished at 17:34 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

    Leicestershire 422 & 237-8 v Durham 517-6 dec & 343-3 dec - Target: 439

Peter Handscomb takes a single off the fourth ball of Matt Parkinson's over and gives Ed Barnes two to survive.

Parkinson gets some dramatic bounce through to wicketkeeper Ollie Robinson, but crucially it flies above Barnes' forward thrust without taking an edge. Barnes has one from 25 balls.

Hang on. Ben Raine is back. It's getting tense out here. 12 overs left.

Sussex 270-9, chasing 359 to beat Glamorgan

Oli Carter made a century in a losing effort at Glamorgan last year. He has a precious half-century today and he'll hope to avoid the same fate in the final 11 overs.

He brings it up with a slash through the covers for his seventh four from 113 deliveries.

Just the second fifty of the match for Sussex after Fynn Hudson-Prentice in the first innings.

Half-century for Ed Pollockpublished at 17:25 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

    Worcestershire 237 & 227-5, Derbyshire 578-5 dec

    Ed PollockImage source, Rex Features

Ed Pollock goes to his half-century with his 10th boundary - a cover drive off Luis Reece.

It is the 16th of his career in all cricket, seven of which have come in red-ball cricket - and comfortably the slowest. 181 balls!!!

But it has been a match-saving knock from the white-ball specialist that Worcestershire have been trying to transform from a Bazballer into a proper batter.

  5. dropped catch

Dropped catchpublished at 17:23 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

Sussex 262-9, chasing 359 to beat Glamorgan

Zain ul-Hassan puts down a sharp chance at first slip to end the match.

Oli Carter slashed at one from Timm van der Gugten but although ul-Hassan got two hands high to his left as he dived, the ball doesn't stick. He looks to the heavens. Carter has been dropped twice now.

Glamorgan were thwarted in their quest for victory at Headlingley by a heroic final wicket pair - can lightning strike twice?

  6. The final hour at Leicesterpublished at 17:21 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

    Leicestershire 422 & 231-8 v Durham 517-6 dec & 343-3 dec - Target: 439

The light remains dubious in Leicester, meaning Durham have to stick with spin as we enter the final hour.

Ben Raine (4-45) is the leading wicket-taker in Division Two this season with 37 and has claimed four wickets on five occasions.

In an odd quirk he has yet to convert one into a five-for and may not get the chance here unless it brightens up.

  7. Postpublished at 17:15 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

    Leicestershire 422 & 226-8 v Durham 517-6 dec & 343-3 dec - Target: 439

    An escape for Peter Handscomb.

He's barely given a chance today, but his number is nearly up as he gets a leading edge to Liam Trevaskis.

It loops up and looks certain to be caught by Scott Borthwick at mid-on but drops agonisingly over the skipper's head.

17 overs to go and Handscomb is on strike again for the next over.

  8. Postpublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

Sussex 254-9, chasing 359 to beat Glamorgan

Mitch Swepson will bowl his leg-spin from the Taff End with a brand new cherry. Anything goes in the final session of a game like this.

Oli Carter is on 43 from 94 balls, Henry Shipley has four from 12 at the other end.

Stunning reaction catch at slip from Kiran Carlson prompts a huge yell but it's come off the pad only. That would have been an incredible way to seal it, had their been bat involved.

  9. Postpublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

    Leicestershire 422 & 224-8 v Durham 517-6 dec & 343-3 dec - Target: 439

Ed Barnes is providing doughty support to Peter Handscomb.

The Australian is taking as much of the strike as he can, while helping himself to the odd boundary through the wide open spaces of the Uptonsteel County Ground outfield.

The partnership is 31. Barnes has none of them, but has soaked up 14 balls.

    18 overs remaining.

  10. Postpublished at 17:05 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

Sussex 251-9, chasing 359 to beat Glamorgan

The 108 runs don't matter... Sussex are trying to survive until the rain, or bad light, or 18 overs arrive. Whichever comes first.

Glamorgan need one wicket. The difference between winning and drawing is 11 points. Sussex were 10 ahead of Glamorgan coming into this match. Fine margins in the Championship.

80 overs gone. Time against him, Kiran Carlson has opted to take the new ball, which is given to Timm van der Gugten.

  11. 100 runs

    Leicestershire 422 & 215-8 v Durham 517-6 dec & 343-3 dec - Target: 439

It may come in a losing cause, but Peter Handscomb drives Matt Parkinson for four to bring up his second County Championship ton of the season.

He has looked unflustered since lunch and claims his 21st career first-class century.

The landmark has come off 141 largely untroubled balls. They all count.

Durham still need two wickets. We have 20 overs to go.

Sussex 246-9, chasing 359 to beat Glamorgan

Fascinating scenes of County Championship nuance.

Glamorgan fielders back off with Oli Carter on strike this over, offering him the single to bring Henry Shipley onto strike. He's not interested even after cracking the ball into the deep. Then midway through the over the fielders flock back into the square like pigeons to try and prevent him getting off strike.

  13. YORKSHIRE DRAW WITH GLOUCESTERSHIREpublished at 16:57 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

    Yorkshire (550-9 dec & 200-6, 13 pts) draw with Gloucestershire (464, 11 pts)

Finally this game has been out of its misery and brouight to a mercifui conclusion by umoires Neil Mallender and Peter Hartley.

  14. Five past five restart at Worcesterpublished at 16:54 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

    Worcestershire 237 & 213-5, Derbyshire 578-5 dec

The Pears still have work to do here.

After 32 minutes - and eight overs lost - Worcestershire and Derbyshire are to resume at 5.05.

20 overs left to play, say umpires Richard Illingworth and Surendiran Shanmugam.

    But at Headingley . . .

  15. 200 runs

    Leicestershire 422 & 201-8 v Durham 517-6 dec & 343-3 dec - Target: 439

Runs are nominal for Leicestershire as they look to see out overs for a draw.

But Peter Handscomb takes three boundaries from Liam Trevaskis' seventh over to bring up the 200.

Handscomb has looked untroubled and imperious. He's 11 shy of his century, but will he get a chance to get there?

WICKET Carson c Root b van der Gugten 16published at 16:52 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

Sussex 243-9, chasing 359 to beat Glamorgan

Three fours in five balls for Jack Carson and all of a sudden Sussex are within 116 but Carson has turned Timm van der Gugten off his hip into the leg side but straight to Billy Root at a short square leg. Wild celebrations from the hosts.

Henry Shipley is the last man for Sussex as the skies darken further. One wicket to go.

Great drama from the BBC. Hit the link at the top of the page to listen to the closing stages.

    Leicestershire 422 & 189-8 v Durham 517-6 dec & 343-3 dec - Target: 439

    How's that for brotherly love?

Callum Parkinson has four men around the bat as he faces his brother Matt.

Bowler Parkinson gets one to turn through the bat and pad of batter Parkinson but it misses the stumps.

Then three balls later batter Parkinson is pinned in front and his short stay is over. Peter Handscomb (77) looks on helpless at the other end

Durham are two wickets away and 26 overs remain. Ed Barnes joins the party.

  18. Postpublished at 16:41 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

Sussex 230-8, chasing 359 to beat Glamorgan

The skies have darkened dramatically in the past few moments. Just to add an extra element of peril to Glamorgan's task.

Even if the rain doesn't arrive the light might fail.

129 runs. Two wickets. Not sure we see all 23 overs on the slate.

BBC Radio Wales commentator Nick Webb raises a fine point, which side would have benefitted more from the loss of 15 overs to rain this morning?

  19. Postpublished at 16:40 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

    Leicestershire 422 & 187-7 v Durham 517-6 dec & 343-3 dec - Target: 439

The umpires dig out the light meters again as it gets a little dark once more.

To ease the possibility of going off, the slow arm of Liam Trevaskis comes into the attack to replace Matthew Potts.

He digs out a maiden. Matt Parkinson continues at the other end.

    27 overs to go.

  20. dropped catch

Dropped catchpublished at 16:37 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

Sussex 230-8, chasing 359 to beat Glamorgan

Billy Root puts down a hard chance at square leg as Oli Carter pulls Jamie Mcilroy away.

Carter has also just beaten a run-out. Kamikaze stuff when you just need to stay out there and bat with No10... and possibly No11 too.
